Chapter 2

Maya dropped the photograph as if it had burned her fingers. It fluttered onto the mahogany desk, landing face up next to her bank statements.

She spun around.

Julian Sterling stood in the doorway. He was taller than he appeared in the glossy financial magazines, a towering figure cut from bespoke charcoal wool and ruthless authority. His dark hair was meticulously styled, but it was his eyes that pinned her to the floor. They were a pale, arctic gray. Completely devoid of warmth.

"You're early," he said. His voice was a low, smooth baritone that commanded the air in the room.

He closed the door behind him and walked toward the desk. He didn't seem to care that she had been digging through the confidential folder. In fact, he barely glanced at it.

"Where did you get this?" Maya demanded. Her voice cracked, betraying the panic clawing at her throat. She pointed a trembling finger at the photograph. "Why do you have a picture of me from five years ago? Have you been following me?"

Julian rounded the desk and settled into the high-backed leather chair. He adjusted his cuffs with maddening precision.

"I prefer to know everything about the assets I acquire," he replied evenly.

"I am not an asset. And I’m definitely not for sale." Maya grabbed the strap of her canvas bag, her survival instincts screaming at her to run. This man wasn't just a corporate shark. He was a predator who had somehow unspooled the darkest secret of her life.

"Sit down, Maya."

He didn't yell. He didn't even raise his voice. But the quiet command carried an undeniable weight. She froze halfway to the door.

"You owe the Petrov syndicate five million dollars," Julian stated, opening the folder and neatly realigning the pages she had disturbed. "Your sister, Lily, requires three dialysis treatments a week. Without a transplant, her life expectancy is less than eighteen months. You currently have four hundred and twelve dollars to your name. You can walk out that door if you want to. But we both know you won't."

Maya’s nails dug into her palms. She forced herself to walk back to the chair across from him, sinking into the leather. "What do you want from me?"

Julian steepled his fingers, watching her with a gaze so intense it felt physical. "In three weeks, I turn thirty. According to my late grandfather's trust, I must be married and cohabitating with my spouse to inherit his fifty-one percent voting share of Sterling Global. If I am not, the shares default to my stepmother, Beatrice. She will strip this company down and sell it for parts."

"So, buy a wife," Maya spat out, the anger finally overriding her fear. "You're a billionaire. Throw a rock in this city and you'll hit a socialite desperate to marry you."

"Socialites come with families. They come with leverage, expectations, and the paparazzi." Julian leaned forward, the faint scent of cedar drifting across the desk. "I need someone who is completely dependent on me. Someone who will sign a non-disclosure agreement, smile for the cameras, live in my home, and then quietly disappear when the two-year term expires. I need a ghost."

Maya stared at him, disgusted by the sheer clinical detachment in his voice. He was talking about marriage about her entire life as if it were a quarterly earnings report.

"And why me?" she asked bitterly. "Because you found a picture of me covered in blood and figured you could blackmail me into it?"

A muscle flickered in Julian’s jaw. The movement was so fast she almost missed it. "Because you are desperate," he corrected, his tone dropping a fraction of a degree. "And desperate people follow the rules. Rule one: We share a bedroom to convince the staff, but there will be no physical intimacy. Rule two: You do not interfere in my personal life. Rule three: You never ask questions about my past."

He pulled a thick, leather-bound contract from a drawer and slid it across the smooth wood. Along with it came an expensive fountain pen.

"If you sign," Julian continued, "your debt to the Petrovs is erased by noon today. Your sister’s medical care is transferred to the VIP wing of Mount Sinai Hospital. Top specialists. A priority transplant list. Fully funded."

Maya looked down at the paper. The black ink blurred as tears of pure frustration pricked her eyes. She hated him. She hated his expensive suit, his cold eyes, and the fact that he held her sister’s life in his perfectly manicured hands.

But Silas’s voice echoed in her mind. Maybe your sister has a good cornea.

Maya snatched the pen. She flipped to the last page of the contract and scrawled her signature on the dotted line, pressing so hard the nib nearly tore the heavy paper.

She shoved the binder back across the desk and stood up, her chair scraping loudly against the marble floor. "I’ll pack my things. When do you want me at your house?"

"My driver is downstairs," Julian said, closing the binder. "You don't need to pack. A wardrobe has been provided for you. My team is currently transferring your sister's medical equipment. She is already on her way to Mount Sinai."

Maya’s breath caught. "You moved her without my permission?"

"I secured her safety. You're welcome." Julian didn't look up as he spoke, his attention already shifting to his laptop screen. Dismissing her.

Maya turned on her heel and stormed out of the office, slamming the heavy frosted glass doors behind her.

The moment the resounding crack of the door faded, the temperature in the room changed.

Julian exhaled a long, shaky breath. He closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the leather chair. His hands, previously perfectly steady, were now trembling slightly. He clenched them into fists, fighting to control the violent surge of adrenaline crashing through his system.

She's here. I have her.

A side door near the bookcase opened silently. Elias Thorne, Julian's chief legal counsel, stepped into the office. The older man looked at the freshly signed contract on the desk.

"She took the bait," Elias said quietly. "But Julian, my security team advises caution. Sending a wire transfer of five million to the Petrov syndicate will put a massive target on your back. They are dangerous. Underground."

Julian opened his eyes. The vulnerability was instantly gone, replaced by a terrifying, lethal sharpness.

"I'm not sending them a wire transfer, Elias," Julian whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying promise of death. "I want you to send the strike team. Wipe the Petrovs off the map by midnight. No one threatens my wife."

Chapter 22"They’re here to arrest Maya for the conspiracy to murder Elias Thorne."The words echoed in the pristine, sunlit kitchen, completely shattering the domestic peace. Maya’s breath hitched in her throat. Her gaze dropped to the federal documents sitting on the marble island next to her ruined scones. *Conspiracy to murder.* Elias Thorne had built the kill box. Elias had ordered the execution squad. But Elias was a respected, untouchable corporate titan, and he was dead. She was just the broke daughter of the contractor who poured the concrete. To the feds, it looked like a calculated, multi-generational revenge plot. Damian Croft hadn't just built a smear campaign. He had built a guillotine. "Julian," Maya whispered, her hands beginning to tremble as the sheer gravity of the trap closed around her. Julian didn't look at her. He didn't blink. He was staring at the wall, his pale gray eyes entirely dead, calculating algorithms of survival at a terrifying speed. The monster

She was a master architectural restorer. She could look at a crumbled, hundred-year-old gothic cathedral and perfectly calculate the load-bearing stress of its arches. But a simple batch of blueberry scones was apparently her kryptonite."They're smoking," a low, gravelly voice observed from the doorway.Maya jumped, spinning around.Julian stood leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed over his chest. It had been six weeks since the bloodbath at the hospital. He was dressed in soft gray sweatpants and a plain white t-shirt, though the shirt was currently unbuttoned to accommodate the thick bandages still wrapped tightly around his ribs. The jagged, pink scars peeking out from the gauze were a brutal map of everything he had survived for her.He didn't look l

The red emergency lights cast everything in the room in a bloody, sinister hue. Elias Thorne’s kill squad was executing the remaining perimeter guards. They were less than fifty feet away."Under the bed," Julian commanded, his voice a harsh, jagged rasp through the oxygen mask."No." Maya’s hands flew to the heavy metal side rails. Her architectural mind, trained to assess structural integrity and fatal flaws, went into overdrive. "There’s no secondary exit in this suite. Hiding under the mattress just traps me in the crossfire.""Maya, do it now!" Julian snarled, attempting to force himself upward. His abdominal stitches shrieked in protest, a fresh stain of dark crimson blossoming rapidly across his thin hospital gown.Maya shoved him firmly back down. "I am not watching you die to protect me again!

He was the apex predator of Sterling Global, and a threat had just breached his territory. He reached up, his bruised fingers digging into the edge of his oxygen mask to rip it off."Don't you dare," Maya ordered. She didn't hesitate. She grabbed his wrists, pressing his hands firmly back against the mattress.Julian fought her grip, his jaw locking in defiance. A sharp, involuntary hiss of pain escaped his lips as the movement pulled his torn abdominal stitches.
