Maria’s POV

I woke up to the sound of someone pounding relentlessly on my door.

In my dream, it felt like an earthquake, but as my brain caught up, I realized, unfortunately, it was real. I dragged myself out of bed, eyes heavy, feet sluggish, and shuffled toward the door.

“Who is it?” I mumbled, still half-asleep.

“Open up, Pet!” Anna’s voice screeched from the other side.

I cracked the door open, stepped aside, and left her to let herself in. Without ceremony, I flopped back onto the couch, desperate to steal just a few more minutes of sleep. God, I regretted staying up late, spinning imaginary scenarios about Elias. I hadn’t fallen asleep until past four, and now the punishment had arrived bright and early.

“You look dead,” Anna commented, plopping onto the couch and smacking my leg as she made herself comfortable.

I muttered something into the pillow, words that even I didn’t fully hear.

“Wake up, Pet. There’s fire on the mountain,” Anna said, still tapping at my

MARIAThe restaurant was packed full, buzzing with life as usual. The moment I stepped inside, my eyes found her. Lucia was seated at the bar, her figure swallowed in her usual attire: black hoodie, black cap, black leggings.I was no less hidden. A black coat draped over my gown, a silk scarf covering my hair, and black sunglasses shielding my eyes. It wasn’t lost on me that people were staring as I walked past. I knew I looked strange— suspicious even, but safety was more important than appearances.I slid onto the barstool beside her, ordered a can of Coke to blend in, and kept quiet. Neither of us turned to face the other. Neither of us spoke. We simply sat there, side by side, drowning in tension. Words hung between us, heavy and unsaid.By the time my Coke arrived, I was convinced she would say nothing at all. But then, she let out a dry, humorless chuckle.“You look too calm for someone in a dilemma, Maria. Must be the perks of marrying a billionaire.”Her words stung, though h

MARIA“I don’t like this, Maria. I don’t like this.” Elias muttered bitterly, his voice tight and full of warning.I rushed to him immediately, throwing my arms around him and pulling him into a hug. The truth was, I was doing it to calm myself more than him. I pressed my face against his chest, breathing him in, before leaning back just enough to look at his eyes. They were dark and angry, stormy with emotions he was trying hard to control.“Nothing will happen to me,” I said softly, stroking his arm. “You can send your men to keep watch, or you can even do it yourself if that makes you feel better. But I have to do this.”Elias’s jaw clenched tight, his teeth gritting so hard I thought it might hurt. He looked like he had a thousand arguments lined up on his tongue, ready to pour them out, but he swallowed them back. Instead, he pulled me into another hug, this one so much tighter than the first. His arms caged me against him, his face buried in my hair as he inhaled deeply.“If any

MARIAElias looked ready to throttle Damon, but surely he knew, my heart belonged to him.I wasn’t surprised to see Damon coming in with my husband, though it left me confused. To the media, they were enemies, constantly painted as rivals. But I knew better. I knew Damon considered Elias a friend, and I also knew Damon harbored a crush on me.He was handsome, tall, muscled, and perfectly cut in that suit. His brown hair, always left slightly tousled as if he couldn’t be bothered to comb it, somehow suited him. His brows were thick and commanding, his skin tanned, his nose straight and sharp, and his mouth fitted with the kind of ease that looked sculpted rather than grown. If he ever got tired of running a company, he could have walked down a runway without effort. But still, he didn’t hold a candle to Elias. And this wasn’t me being biased. Elias was called the most sought-after businessman for a reason, and much of it had to do with his devastating looks.Damon sprawled into a seat

ELIAS“Not even one week into your promotion and you are already leaving flies in your wake, Moreno,” Boris hissed into the phone, his voice sharp enough to cut glass. “I must say, you are a very popular man.”“I have it under control,” I deadpanned, my tone flat as ice.“Oh, I’m sure you do.” He chuckled, low and mocking. “I just hope you’ll have things under control when Ballard requests a meeting with the members.”He didn’t wait for me to reply before the line went dead, the abrupt silence gnawing at the edges of my already frayed temper.Enough grace had been given to Lucia, and still she tested me, dragging my name, my reputation, and worse, my wife, through the mud. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what Maria was feeling, but the thought of her humiliation only fanned the fire already roaring in my chest.Lucia was relentless, I would give her that. But what she didn’t know was this; you didn’t make an enemy of me. That was the gravest mistake she had ever made. And I was going

Maria’s POVI woke much earlier than Elias, which almost never happened. He was always up before me, out and about, as if sleep was something he could afford to waste. Yesterday must have drained him, though, because he lay beside me now, sleeping deeply. I watched him in silence, my heart fluttering at the sight, this was the first time I had ever seen him so vulnerable. He looked almost boyish, soft in the quiet, his lips full and pouty, his brows drawn together even in rest. Cute, Isaac cute. It was almost impossible to reconcile this image with the man I knew: billionaire, cold, untouchable… and bound to the mafia. The truth I’d learned yesterday still sat heavy inside me. I couldn’t shake the horror of what Elias had endured as a child. It was terrifying, heartbreaking, nauseating all at once. And yet, part of me felt relieved. One layer of the enigma had peeled away. My husband was a puzzle, but at least I had started to fit the pieces together. He stirred, lips parting, and I

MARIAElias didn’t look pleased that I had stopped him. He looked ready to throw my father across the restaurant, but he didn’t. Instead, he placed his palm over mine on his thigh. The contact sent a jolt of electricity through me, and then he pinned my father with a cold, steady stare.“I understand where you’re coming from, Mr. Robert,” my husband said, his tone calm but firm. “But your daughter is right here. She has no reason to cover for me if I were guilty of cheating.”If my husband’s calm words shocked my parents, they didn’t show it. My father looked flustered, though. Maybe he had been bracing for a fight, and Elias refused to give him one. I glanced at my mother, and she gave me a small, reassuring smile.I tried to pull my hand away from Elias’s thigh, but he caught it and held me tighter. I turned to him in confusion, but my father’s voice pulled me back.“Mari,” he said, his eyes sharp. “Is that true? Is he really not cheating on you?”My heart sank. The truth was, I was
