The Leak

The email arrived on a Tuesday, and by noon half the building was whispering.

CONFIDENTIAL: Okafor Holdings tender bid, Lekki Port Expansion. Sent from Ada's work account to a rival firm. Two hundred pages of pricing, margins and strategy, delivered to Marlowe Group at 2:14 a.m.

Ada read it three times at her desk with her heart going cold.

She had not written it. She had not sent it. She had been asleep at 2:14 a.m., in a locked bedroom, in a house she did not trust.

Mr. Eze stood at her door with his hands folded.

"The Chief has called an emergency board meeting," he said. "He asks that you attend."

"I'm sure he does."

"It would be wise, ma, to prepare an explanation."

He's enjoying this, she thought. He is not even pretending not to.

The boardroom was long and cold. Twelve men and two women sat around a table that could have hosted a state banquet. At the head, the Chief wore the look of a patriarch forced to discipline a child.

"Mrs. Okafor," he said. "I regret this. But the evidence is clear."

"The evidence is an email," Ada said.

"Sent from your account."

"Using my credentials, from a device that was not mine."

"A convenient defence."

"It is a technical fact." She slid a folded page across the table. "The message was sent through a relay in Lekki. The office router is in Victoria Island. My laptop was locked in my bedroom at the residence, and the house staff can confirm I never left it."

"Servants will say whatever they are asked to say."

"Then ask the logs. They cannot be asked to say anything."

A murmur went around the table. The Chief's eyes narrowed, just slightly.

"This board," he said, "cannot afford a security risk at the heart of our finance department. Under company bylaw nine, I move that Mrs. Okafor be suspended from all access pending investigation. Those in favour."

Three hands lifted. Then four.

Ada felt the floor tilt.

"Those against."

"I am against."

Damian had not raised his voice. He rose from his chair at the far end, buttoning his jacket, and every head in the room turned.

"Son," the Chief said softly. "Sit down."

"No."

"This is a board matter."

"It is a matter of my wife's name." Damian walked down the length of the table. His eyes did not leave his father's face. "An email was sent from her credentials at a time she was demonstrably asleep. I have pulled the building logs. At 2:09 a.m., a badge was swiped into the server room on the seventeenth floor. It was not hers. It was not mine."

"Whose was it?"

"That is what the forensic team is working to establish." A beat. "And I would advise the board that any member who votes to suspend her tonight will be asked, in the next quarter, why he was so eager to remove the one person qualified to audit the finance floor."

Silence. The Chief's smile hardened like old plaster.

"You are threatening your own board."

"I am protecting my company."

"By protecting a Bello?"

"By protecting my wife."

The word hung in the air. Three of the four hands that had risen slowly came down.

The motion failed by one vote.

Ada caught up with him in the corridor outside the lift.

"Stop."

He did not stop. She grabbed his sleeve and swung him around, and he let her, which was somehow worse.

"Why?" she demanded. "Why did you do that? You do not know me. You have no reason to defend me."

"You are my wife."

"On paper."

"Then on paper, I defend you."

"That is not an answer, that is a deflection." Her voice cracked. "You have been giving me those since the day I met you. I am so tired of it, Damian. I am tired of every sentence being a locked door."

"I know."

"Do you? Because I found a folder in your study. With photographs. Of me and my sister. Taken for months."

His face did not change. But his hand, hanging at his side, curled slowly into a fist.

"You opened the drawer."

"Somebody told me where the key was."

"Who?"

"Someone with your number of secrets. Why are you watching my family?"

"Because someone else is."

She stared.

"Someone has been following you since your father's company fell," Damian said, very low. "Following Zainab. I put people near you. Quietly. Because I could not do it myself and because I could not tell you."

"You could not—"

"If I had, you would have run to the nearest police station. And the nearest police station belongs to my father."

The fluorescent light hummed. Down the hall, a door closed.

Ada realised, with a distant, dizzy surprise, that she had stepped closer. That she was close enough to see the faint scar through his left eyebrow. That his breathing had gone shallow.

"Ada," he said.

"Don't."

"I am not doing anything."

"You are standing too close."

"You are."

Neither of them moved.

His eyes dropped to her mouth. Hers lifted to his. The air between them pulled tight like wire, humming, almost audible, and Ada could not remember what she had come into the corridor to say.

"Sir?"

Tobi stood three feet away, red to the ears, a tablet clutched to his chest.

"I am very sorry. Sir. The forensics report. I thought you should know. The server room badge." He swallowed. "It belongs to Mr. Eze."

The moment shattered.

Damian stepped back. Ada pressed her hand to her mouth and looked anywhere but at him.

"Thank you, Tobi," Damian said, in a voice that was almost steady. "Please keep that between us for now."

"Yes, sir."

"And Tobi?"

"Sir?"

"Next time, knock louder."

The invitation arrived on thick, cream-coloured paper.Lunch. Just us girls. V.Ada should have thrown it away. Instead she found herself, at one o'clock on Thursday, seated across from Vivian Adeyemi at a corner table in the most exclusive restaurant on Victoria Island, watching a waiter pour sparkling water into a crystal glass."I want to apologise for the party," Vivian said."No, you don't.""No," Vivian agreed, with a bright, brittle smile. "I don't. But I do want to offer you something better."She slid a cheque across the tablecloth.Fifty million naira. Made out to Adanna Bello. The signature at the bottom was not Vivian's. It was a bold, familiar flourish, black as ink.Emeka Okafor."Take it," Vivian said, "and walk away. Today. Before the year is out. It's a very generous offer. More than you will ever be paid by my fiancé.""Your fiancé is my husband.""For now.""The contract says twelve months.""Yes, the contract." Vivian leaned forward on her elbows. "Has he explained

Zainab's room smelled of antiseptic and lilies."You're late," she said, without looking up from her phone."Traffic.""You're always late now. Marriage is making you unreliable.""Marriage is a very recent development.""Hmm." Zainab put the phone down and studied her sister with the frank, clinical stare of a seventeen-year-old who had spent most of her life in hospitals. "You look different.""I look tired.""No. You look worried. There's a difference. Tired is in the eyes. Worried is in the mouth." She tilted her head. "Is he mean to you?""No.""Is he nice to you?"Ada hesitated a fraction too long. "He is... complicated.""That's the answer people give when it's worse than they want to say."Before Ada could reply, a knock came at the door.Damian stood in the doorway with a paper bag in one hand and the look of a man who had walked into the wrong building."I did not know visitors had hours," he said."They don't, for you apparently," Zainab said. The Eko Grand Hotel had been dressed like a palace for the night.Ada stepped out of the car into a storm of flashbulbs. Photographers shouted over the barricade. Mrs. Okafor! Over here! Mr. Okafor, look at your wife! Damian's hand settled at her waist, warm through the green silk, and he bent his head as though whispering something tender."Smile," he murmured. "They are counting your teeth.""I am smiling.""You look like you are planning a murder.""Only a small one."His mouth twitched. To the cameras, it looked like a private joke between a husband and wife in love. Ada hated how well it worked.Inside, the ballroom glittered with chandeliers and old money. Politicians, oil barons, women in gowns heavy with beads. The Chief held court at the centre like a king receiving tribute, and the moment he saw them, he raised his glass."My son! My daughter-in-law! Come, come."Ada kept her smile in place and walked into the lion's den.The Chief waited until the room had quieted around hi

Ada did not scream. She did not slam the laptop shut either, because a guilty woman slams things. She tapped one key, let the transfer record vanish behind a harmless spreadsheet of fuel costs, and turned her chair with all the calm of a woman who had been reading about trucks all afternoon."Mr. Okafor.""Mrs. Okafor." Damian closed the door behind him and the glass walls hummed back into silence. "Mr. Eze tells me you have not eaten since morning.""Mr. Eze talks too much.""Mr. Eze reports to me." He crossed the room slowly and stopped beside her desk. He did not look at the laptop. That was what frightened her. A man with nothing to hide would have looked. "You found something."It was not a question.Ada folded her hands in her lap so he would not see them shake. "I have found a great many things. Your accounts payable are a mess. Your fuel contracts are overpriced.""Ada."It was the first time he had said her name. Not Miss Bello, not Mrs. Okafor. Just the two syllables, low an

The red earth looked too bright for a day like this.Ada Bello stood at the edge of her father's grave, her fingers locked so tightly together that her nails had left half-moons in her palms. Around her, the mourners murmured. Women in black lace dabbed at dry eyes. Men in dark agbada checked their phones when they thought no one was looking.Nobody was really crying. Nobody except Zainab. Her little sister's shoulders shook against her arm. Seventeen years old, thin as paper, still wearing the hospital band on her wrist because she had begged the doctors for four hours out to say goodbye to their father."Daddy didn't do it," Zainab whispered. "Ada, tell me he didn't do it.""He didn't," Ada said, and her voice came out steadier than she felt. "I promise you."It was a promise she had no right to make. She was a forensic accountant. She spent her days finding what numbers tried to hide, and for three months she had stared at the books of Bello Freight & Logistics without finding a si
