The bell rang, a loud metallic sound that echoed through the halls of Goodwill High. Katherine flinched; it reminded her all too well of the D marked on her test paper, glaring back at her in accusing red ink. It was a sight she was becoming all too familiar with, those D's and C's following her like a constant reminder of her academic difficulties, slowly chiseling away at her self-esteem.

A sense of despair settled heavily in her chest, suffocating and uncomfortable. It wasn’t for lack of effort; she had spent countless hours bent over textbooks, frantically taking notes, yet her mind still felt jumbled, resisting each attempt to grasp the material. The test had been a painful blow, further proof of her perceived lack of intelligence.

Thoughts of her mother’s voice drifted into her mind, the familiar disappointment echoing in her ears: "You need to try harder, like your sister." Katherine squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out those words that stung like a slap, an ongoing reminder of how her sister’s success loomed over her.

She shoved the test paper into her locker, an act that felt both pointless and necessary. She wished she could simply vanish, to erase the embarrassment and the reminders of her failures and her inability to meet expectations.

"Hey, Kat!"

Hailey's bright, cheerful voice cut through her gloom. Katherine turned, attempting to muster a smile, her voice lacking the usual enthusiasm. "Hey, Hails. How’s everything?"

"Amazing!" Hailey exclaimed, her brown hair bouncing in twin pigtails, her big brown eyes shining with excitement. "We have a new student!"

Katherine, still lost in her own thoughts, reached for her textbooks, her mind cloudy. "So?"

"Oh my god, you’re going to love him, Kat,” Hailey gushed, leaning against her shoulder. "He’s super handsome! Way cuter than any of the boys on the soccer team. Seriously, he’s like the definition of hotness. Everyone’s been talking about him. I think I’m in love!"

Katherine offered a weary, indulgent smile at her friend's enthusiasm. "You fall for a new boy every week, Hails. You’ll get over him."

Turning to leave, she felt a pit in her stomach at the thought of the upcoming class and yet another chance to fail. But as she reached for her locker, she bumped into a solid, warm presence that sent her stumbling back.

"Oh my god!" she gasped, eyes wide. It felt like she had hit a wall in the middle of the hallway.

She could hear the students murmuring around her, their gazes fixed on her with a mixture of amusement and pity.

"Kat?" Hailey's voice was filled with shock.

"I’m so sorry!" a deep, smooth voice startled her. Looking up, she met a pair of striking silver eyes that seemed to hold her captive.

A tall, lean boy, not much older than her, stood before her, his dark hair tied back in a half-up, half-down ponytail that framed his handsome face. He was undeniably attractive, a blend of roughness and elegance, with sharp features and an intense gaze.

"Let me help you," he said, extending a hand, his voice a soft melody giving her a shiver down the spine.

But before he could reach her, another voice broke in, sharp and authoritative, "That’s not a problem, is it, Kathy?"

Katherine felt her stomach sink; the familiar chill of her sister's disapproval washed over her. She braced herself for the impending interrogation, the subtle digs, the constant reminder of how she fell short.

"It’s okay," she mumbled, avoiding her sister's glare, feeling the weight of her presence pressing down like an unwelcome burden. Gathering her scattered books, her fingers trembled. "I’m fine."

"But I bumped into her," the boy insisted, his voice soft, eyes focused on her with unspoken questions lingering.

Hailey piped up with indignation, "Yeah! Why can’t he help?!"

Caroline’s eyes narrowed at Hailey before shifting back to Katherine, her gaze sharp. "It’s really not an issue, Kathy. Or is it?"

Katherine felt panic rising, not wanting to ignite a fight, especially not in front of him. She just wanted to fade into the background, to avoid this awkward confrontation.

"No, it’s not," she whispered, unable to meet those silver eyes that seemed to hold her in place. All she wanted was to escape the pressure, but her feet felt stuck.

"Okay," he said, a hint of disappointment in his tone, as if her response had let him down. He turned his gaze to Caroline, their eyes locking for a brief moment, an unspoken tension in the air. "I’ll just continue with our tour," he said smoothly, a stark contrast to her sister’s clipped words.

Katherine watched them walk away, their figures disappearing into the bustling hallway. A wave of relief washed over her, the pressure lifting momentarily.

Hailey, fuming still, glanced back at Katherine, concern and astonishment evident in her features. "Are you okay, Kat?"

Katherine forced a smile, aiming to comfort her friend. "I’m fine." But the words felt empty, a shallow echo of her true feelings.

"That was him," Hailey said with a small smile. "The new handsome boy."

Katherine stood there for a moment, lost in her thoughts while Hailey faded away, her cheerful chatter slipping into the background noise of the hallway. The weight of her perceived failures pressed down on her, alongside the constancy of her sister's shadow, serving as a continual reminder of her inadequacy.

She felt a deep loneliness, an isolation that had become her persistent companion. She longed for someone to understand her, to see past the facade she had put up, to recognize the pain and fear lurking beneath. While Hailey was a good friend, even she couldn’t ease the loneliness that felt so deeply ingrained in her heart.

Pulling out her phone, her hands shook as she scrolled through her contacts, feeling her heart sink with every missed call and unanswered text. There was no one to reach out to, no one to share her thoughts with. She was alone, and the world felt cold and indifferent.

As she headed to her next class, the weight of her solitude felt overwhelming. She wished she could simply disappear, to escape the constant scrutiny, the judgment, and the relentless reminders of her failures.

She found comfort in the familiar routine of class, the structure, the monotone voice of her teacher, and the sound of her pencil scratching on paper.

Yet, even in this quiet refuge, the nagging thoughts crept back in, the never-ending comparisons, the suffocating sense of inadequacy. She felt like a mere shadow, a reflection of her sister's brilliance, destined to dwell in her shadow.

She longed to discover her own brightness, to break free from her past's constraints, to carve her own path, to amplify her own voice.

But for now, she was content to simply exist, to blend into the background, to be invisible, to dissolve into her own sorrow.

She never did.” Katherine studied his face, searching for cracks, for anything that would make her doubt him. She found nothing. “She had a movie to shoot there,” Zayn continued, his voice firm, unwavering. “Our relationship is in the past, Princess. I swear it.” The conviction in his voice sent a shiver through her, but what truly broke her was the sincerity in his gaze—raw, open, true.

His expression softened, his gaze growing distant, as if he was sifting through memories from long ago. “I lost my dad that year,” he admitted, his voice lower now, rougher around the edges. “Everything felt like it was falling apart. But you…” He inhaled slowly, shaking his head slightly. “You were the only thing that remained constant. Until the end of summer, when you had to leave.” Katherine’s fingers trembled slightly against the blanket as another memory surfaced. She had been right. She hadn’t been imagining things when she felt watched in that estate. Only, it hadn’t been something sinister—it hadn’t

She had convinced herself that this moment would be the breaking point-that this was the thing that would push him away for good. But instead, he had said the one thing she never thought she would hear. He loved her. Katherine's heart pounded wildly in her chest, uncertainty swirling in her thoughts. She searched his face for any sign that he was joking, for any hint of insincerity, but Zayn's expression remained steady. She swallowed hard, her voice barely above a whisper. "You're just saying that." She shook her head slightly, trying to steady her breath. "B-because I got pregnant. Because this changes everything." Zayn didn't react immediately. He remained still, watching her carefully, his fingers tracing slow, reassuring patterns against her skin. "No," he said softly, his voice carrying a certainty t

Zayn exhaled, running a hand through his dark hair, the tension in his posture still lingering despite the relief of having her back safely.
