Noel Varess thought he knew his wife. Melowie was quiet. Ordinary, just too ordinary for the world he came from. So when money began disappearing from his company through an account bearing her name, Noel didn't ask her for an explanation. He asked for a divorce. Melowie did not argue much. She signed. She left with nothing. Or so he thought. Three years later, Noel walks into an emergency shareholders' meeting and finds the woman he once discarded sitting at the head of the table. She isn't there to beg for another chance. She's there because she just bought a controlling stake in his company. And she has a name now. Melowie Veyra. Heiress. Billionaire. His newest shareholder. And apparently, the woman his father has spent years trying to keep away from the Varess empire. Noel should hate her. He should fight her. He should forget the woman who once waited for him every night. Then he sees the little boy standing beside her. The boy has his eyes. Suddenly, the divorce he thought was the end of his marriage becomes the beginning of a nightmare he never saw coming. Because Melowie isn't back to reclaim her husband. She's back to uncover what destroyed her family. And if finding the truth means taking Noel's empire apart piece by piece, she won't hesitate. But Noel is about to discover something far more dangerous than losing his fortune. His ex-wife is the only woman he never stopped loving.

Melowie

The small plastic window on the counter stared back at me with two crisp, undeniable pink lines.

My thumb traced the edge of the sink, the porcelain cold against my skin, contrasting sharply with the sudden, disorienting heat in my chest. Five minutes ago, my biggest fear had been finding the right words… wondering if Noel would look up from his laptop when I told him, if he would smile the way he used to when we were younger, or if his eyes would drift back to his screen before the news could even settle.

I took a slow, trembling breath, wrapping my fingers around the tiny plastic stick, and opened the bathroom door.

The house was too quiet. Downstairs, the light in the foyer felt off. It felt sharper, sterile, stripped of the usual evening warmth. As I hit the bottom step, the low murmur of voices drifted from the living room.

I stopped.

There was a stranger sitting on our sofa. He wore a blue suit, a polished leather briefcase resting flat against his knee, a thick manila folder open across the glass coffee table.

Across from him sat Adelina, my mother in law… her posture rigid, her hands folded neatly over her designer bag. Her eyes caught mine the second I stepped into the room… cold, expectant, carrying a faint, satisfied tilt at the corner of her lips.

And then there was Noel.

He didn't look up right away. He was standing by the fireplace, one hand jammed deep into his trouser pocket, his jaw set so hard the muscle twitched beneath his skin.

"Noel?" My voice sounded thin, carrying none of the weight I had brought down the stairs with me. My hand instinctively closed tighter around the test hidden in my palm. "What’s going on? Who is this?"

The attorney didn't wait for Noel to speak. He reached down, cleared his throat with a dry, professional cough, and slid a stack of heavy white documents across the glass. The top page carried bold, unmistakable black lettering: PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE.

My heart gave a single, violent thud against my ribs, then seemed to stop altogether.

"What is this?" I looked from the paper to Noel, but his eyes were fixed on the hearth, refusing to meet mine. "Noel, look at me. Is this a joke?"

"It’s not a joke, Melowie," Adelina said smoothly, her voice cutting through the space like a quiet blade. "We’re just speeding up the process you clearly started months ago."

"Shut up, Adelina," I breathed, my eyes darting back to my husband. "Noel, please. Talk to me. What are you doing?"

Noel finally turned his head. The look in his eyes wasn't anger; it was a deep, scorched emptiness that sent a chill straight down my spine. He didn't look at me like his wife. He looked at me like a stranger who had broken into his home.

The lawyer leaned forward, his hands resting flat on the table. "Mrs. Vare, my client has requested an immediate, uncontested separation based on severe financial misconduct and breach of fiduciary duty." He slid another folder toward me, thick with printed bank statements, Wire transfer receipts, and corporate ledgers. "Over the last six months, approximately four point two million dollars has been systematically moved from Mr. Vare's private investment accounts into offshore holdings."

The numbers on the pages blurred together. "That’s… that’s impossible. I don't even have access to those accounts. Noel, you know I don't look at the corporate finances—"

"Stop lying!" Noel’s voice cracked through the room, sudden and sharp enough to make the attorney flinch. He took two long strides toward the table, his breath coming heavy, his knuckles white where he gripped the edge of the wood. "Just stop it, Mel. The bank flagged the final transfer this morning. Every single authorization form came from your IP address. Every document has your signature."

"I didn't take your money!" The horror was clawing up my throat now, suffocating, raw. I took a step backward, my heels digging into the rug. "I don't care about your money! I’ve never asked you for a single cent outside of what we build together! Why would I steal from you?"

"Maybe because you realized I was pulling back," Noel said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy murmur. He leaned down, his eyes boring into mine with a quiet, agonizing disappointment that hurt worse than a blow. "How long have you been stealing from me, Melowie? Since the day we got married? Or did you wait until you realized you couldn't manipulate me anymore?"

"Noel, no—" Tears burned the back of my eyes, hot and furious, but I forced them down. "Look at me! You know me! We’ve lived together for three years. Do you honestly believe I am capable of this?"

"I don't know who you are," he whispered.

The words hit like physical force, knocking the air straight out of my lungs.

He reached into his jacket, pulled out a single, stapled document, and slapped it down on top of the stack. "The bank sent the physical authorization scan twenty minutes ago. Explain that."

I forced my hands to stop shaking as I reached for the page. It was an international transfer request, authorizing the release of two million dollars to a private holding firm. And there, at the bottom of the page, written in clean, dark ink, was my name.

Except it wasn't mine.

The loops were too wide, the pressure on the final letter too heavy. It was a flawless imitation to anyone else, but I knew the rhythm of my own hand, I knew with absolute, terrifying certainty that I had never held the pen that made those marks.

"This isn't my handwriting," I gasped, lifting my head, searching his face for a single thread of doubt, a single crack in his accusation. "Noel, someone forged this! Look at the 'e', look at the spacing—someone is framing me!"

Adelina let out a quiet, mocking breath from the sofa. "Oh, please. Who else would have your personal details, your security keys, and your full legal name?"

"I am telling you the truth!" I stepped toward Noel, reaching out to grasp his forearm, desperate for physical contact, desperate to ground him before the world collapsed entirely. "Noel, please, listen to me. I don't know what’s happening, but I swear on my life—"

My purse, slung over the back of a dining chair three feet away, began to vibrate wildly.

The sharp, relentless ringing shattered the heavy air in the room. I ignored it, keeping my hand pressed against Noel’s arm, but he looked down at my fingers with absolute disgust and shook me off.

"Answer it," he said, his tone dead. "It’s probably your accomplice checking to see if the money cleared."

"Noel—"

"Answer the damn phone, Melowie."

My hands were trembling so badly I almost dropped the phone as I dragged it from my bag. I didn't even look at the caller ID before pressing it to my ear.

"Hello?" I choked out, my voice thick with unshed tears.

"Mel, thank God—don't say anything, just listen to me!"

The voice on the other end was frantic, high-pitched, laced with raw panic. It was Sophie.

"Sophie, I can't talk right now—"

"No, Melowie, listen to me!" Sophie was crying, her breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. "Don't go back to the house! Don't go anywhere near him! Someone just breached the primary firewall. They’re tracing the server locations right now—someone just tried to access the Veyra protocol!"

The world went completely silent.

The room seemed to tilt beneath my feet. The blood drained from my face so fast my vision darkened at the edges. My thumb went numb against the glass of the phone.

Veyra.

The name hung in the air, heavy, dangerous, a ghost from a past I had buried so deep I thought it was dead. An identity I had spent three years erasing, step by step, word by word, hiding behind the quiet, unassuming life of Noel Varess’s wife.

I didn't answer. I couldn't. I just stood there, the phone pressed against my ear, my chest locked, unable to draw in a single breath.

Across the table, Noel hadn't moved. But the anger in his eyes was gone, replaced by something far more terrifying.

His gaze was fixed on my face, watching the color bleed out of my skin, watching the sudden, paralyzing fear that had nothing to do with the divorce papers on the table.

Slowly, deliberately, he took a step toward me.

The silence in the room stretched until it felt like it would snap. Adelina stopped moving. The lawyer held his breath.

Noel stopped inches away from me, his shadow falling over my trembling frame. He looked down at the phone in my hand, then lifted his eyes to mine—sharp, searching, dangerous.

"What," he asked, his voice low, steady, and terrifyingly clear, "did she just call you?"
