Melowie

"What—no, don't be silly, Noel," Adelina stammered, a high, nervous lilt creeping into her voice that I had never heard in all my years of knowing her. "I mean... is that really what you're thinking right now? I’m your mother. I’m standing here trying to salvage what’s left of your reputation before the morning press catches wind of this mess!"

She tried to force a light, maternal laugh, but the sound died instantly in the heavy space between them.

Noel just stared at her, his eyes dark, unyielding, and hollowed out by a sudden, creeping doubt.

"Nathaniel," Noel said, his voice dropping into a flat, icy register that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Leave the file. Take your coat and go."

"Mr. Vare, the midnight deadline for the Italy freeze—"

"I said go."

The attorney didn't argue a second time. He snapped his leather briefcase shut with a sharp, metallic click, offered a swift, uncomfortable nod toward the room, and slipped out the front door into the rain.

Adelina stood frozen, the silver fountain pen still gripped tightly between her manicured fingers. For a second, her gaze darted toward me in a flash of pure, unadulterated venom passing through her eyes before she smoothed her features back into a mask of wounded aristocratic pride.

"If you want to ruin yourself over a fraud, Noel, be my guest," she whispered, turning on her heel. "You’ll come to your senses by morning."

When the door clicked shut behind her, the silence that settled over the penthouse was deafening.

Noel didn't look at me. He stood by the cold hearth, his shoulders tight, his head bowed as if the weight of the ceiling was slowly coming down on his neck. I didn't say a word. I pulled my wet coat tighter around my shoulders, my fingers still locked around the broken plastic stick in my pocket, turned around, and walked out into the dark.

By two in the morning, the rain had tapered off into a thick, clinging fog that swallowed the streetlights outside Nathan’s safehouse.

I sat at the stainless steel table, my wet clothes replaced by a heavy grey hoodie, my bare feet tucked beneath me on the chair.

My eyes burned from staring at the dual monitors stretched out in front of me. On the left screen rested the Italy wire authorization forms, side-by-side with the internal access logs Nathan had managed to scrape from Varess International’s cloud mainframes before the security lockout went live. On the right screen was the raw, unedited system registry for the past six months.

My hand shook slightly as I dragged the mouse, highlighting two parallel columns of data.

"Look at this," I whispered, my voice sounding raspy, stripped raw by the cold air and the tears I refused to let fall.

Nathan leaned over my shoulder, a steaming mug of black coffee in his hand. He blew on the dark liquid, his brows drawn tight in concentration. "What did you find?"

"The money," I said, pointing my finger at the scrolling lines of code. "Noel thinks I stole twelve million dollars through external breach protocols using my personal credentials. But look at the timestamp on the master admin override."

Nathan squinted at the screen. "That’s... three a.m. local server time. Every Tuesday night for the last four months."

"It’s an internal shadow key," I said, a cold, sickening realization blooming in the pit of my stomach. "Whoever moved the Veyra trust money into Noel’s corporate accounts didn't hack the system from the outside. They didn't break through the firewalls. They used an executive level master pass that bypasses the dual-authentication check entirely."

I pulled up the employee directory for Varess International, filtering the permissions list down to users who possessed master override authority.

Three icons appeared on the screen.

The first was Noel. The second was his Chief Operating Officer, currently on medical leave in Japan.

The third was a ghost account, an auxiliary administrative profile created four years ago, buried deep within the human resources infrastructure, completely exempt from routine security audits.

My heart began to hammer against my ribs, a dark, heavy rhythm that made it hard to draw air into my lungs.

"A master pass like that can only be issued by someone who was there when the firm restructured after Noel dropped the Varess name,"

I murmured, my fingers flying across the keyboard as I executed an inverse audit query on the auxiliary profile. "It requires physical biometric verification at the main terminal downtown. You can't fake it from a remote server. You can't use a VPN. You have to be standing in the room."

"Which means whoever was on that CCTV footage last Tuesday wasn't just wearing your face," Nathan said, his tone dropping into a deadly whisper. "They had a key handed to them from the inside."

"Not just handed to them," I corrected, my stomach churning as the pieces of the puzzle began to slam together with terrifying, brutal precision. "They were let in."

My mind raced back to the penthouse... to the way the divorce petition had appeared on the table before Noel had even returned from his flight; the way the security footage had been delivered directly to Noel’s personal email at four p.m.; the way Adelina had stood over the table, holding out that silver pen, practically begging him to put his name on the line that would strip me of my rights, my freedom, and my dignity.

Noel’s question to Adelina echoed in my head, loud and sharp enough to shatter the quiet hum of the room.

He had felt it too. Even through his rage, even through the heartbreak and the absolute conviction that I had betrayed him, his instincts had picked up on the one anomaly in the room that didn't fit a betrayed husband's story: his mother’s absolute, breathless urgency to sign my life away.

"Filter the auxiliary profile access logs by physical terminal entries," I told Nathan, my voice barely more than a breath. "Cross-reference the biometric entry stamps with the dates the Veyra trust funds were injected into the Varess accounts."

Nathan tapped the screen, his fingers moving fast across the glass. The system whirred, processing the request, pulling thousands of lines of encrypted server traffic into a single, clean spreadsheet.

"It’s compiling," Nathan muttered, leaning closer, his chest rising and falling in heavy, tense increments.

The blue progress bar on the screen swept toward the right. 10%. 50%. 90%.

Done.

A single column populated the display, listing thirty-two distinct unauthorized entries over the last six months. Every single entry matched the exact minute a forged wire transfer had been initialized. Every single entry had been logged from the master terminal on the ninth floor.

And right beside each entry stamp sat the registered owner of the security token used to open the door with a name that didn't belong to an analyst, a broker, or a hacker.

A name that had been authorized at the firm's inception, never revoked, never audited, and used thirty-two times to frame me for grand larceny.

I stared at the glowing letters on the glass, the blood draining from my face so completely that the room seemed to spin in a haze of white noise.

Nathan let out a slow, sharp breath, setting his mug down on the table with a dull clink.

The name on the access log, printed in bold, undeniable system red, was Adelina Varess.

His voice was low, devoid of the earlier panic, stripped down to a harsh, cold reality. "The press draft goes live in less than forty minutes. MelowieThe room felt smaller now, trapped in a suffocating stillness. The single document detailing the million dollar transfer lay on the glass coffee table like a dropped blade. Nathaniel, the attorney, cleared his throat, adjusting the gold cufflink at his wrist before unthreading his pen.
