Melowie

The room condensed into a suffocating, airless vault. The muffled, frantic static of Sophie’s voice was still bleeding faintly from the receiver pressed against my cheek, but I couldn't move my arm to lower the phone.

My fingers had locked entirely.

Noel didn't blink. The slight shift in his posture… the subtle lowering of his chin, the sudden, unnatural stillness in his shoulders was a warning. In seven years, I had seen him look at business rivals with cold calculation, but I had never seen him look at me as if searching for a shape hidden behind a shadow.

"I asked you a question, Melowie," he said. His tone was almost conversational, stripped of the raw anger from moments ago, replaced by something far more lethal. "What did she just call you?"

My tongue felt thick, dry as chalk. Veyra. The sound of it inside this house felt like a gun pulled in a quiet nursery.

If I spoke that name, if I tried to explain the burn-after-reading life I’d left behind before I ever walked into the book shop where we met… I would be handing him the torch to light the fire already built beneath my feet.

With four million dollars missing and a forged signature sitting on the glass table, giving him the truth right now wouldn't set me free. It would sound like a confession. It would turn a frame-job into an executed sentence.

I pressed my lips together and swallowed, forcing my eyes to stay level with his. I said nothing.

"Nothing?" Noel let out a dry, breathy laugh that didn't reach his eyes. He took half a step back, shaking his head slowly as the silence stretched between us, heavy and thick as wet wool. "You're not even going to lie? You're not going to tell me it was an inside joke, or a nickname, or a mishearing?"

"Noel, please," I whispered, the word scraping out of my throat. "I can't... I can't explain this right now. Not like this. Not with them in the room."

"Because you can't, or because you didn't budget for the slip-up?" Adelina’s voice cut in from the couch. She didn't look flustered by the shift in the room; if anything, the tension seemed to feed her. She stood up, her expensive heels making no sound on the thick oriental rug as she stepped toward the attorney. "Show him the rest, Nathaniel. She’s stalling."

The lawyer cleared his throat, clearly uncomfortable with the atmosphere, but reached into his leather briefcase anyway. He pulled out a dark grey USB drive and laid it gently beside the manila folder.

"We received this from your head of corporate security at four-thirty this afternoon, Mr. Varess," the attorney said, his voice flat, neutral, strictly procedural. "It’s the raw, unedited internal feed from the seventh-floor executive wing at the headquarters downtown. Dated last Tuesday. Twelve-forty-two a.m."

Noel didn't break eye contact with me as he reached out, his long fingers picking up the drive. He walked over to his laptop sitting open on the side credenza and slotted it in.

I didn't move. My mind was frantically spinning, trying to anchor myself to reality. Last Tuesday.*

Last Tuesday I had been in bed by ten. Noel had been in Chicago on a two-day conference. I had stayed up watching the rain against the window, boiling chamomile tea because my stomach had felt off—the very first sign of the two lines currently hidden in my sweater pocket.

A harsh, mechanical beep echoed from the laptop speaker as the video file loaded.

"Look at the screen, Melowie," Noel said softly.

I forced my feet to carry me two steps forward. The high-definition black-and-white feed showed the quiet, carpeted hallway outside the finance office.

The timestamp in the corner read 00:42:18.

Then, a figure walked into the frame.

My heart didn't race; it stopped. The blood rushed out of my ears with a heavy, roaring sound.

The woman on the screen paused beneath the hallway light to key in the master security code. She was wearing a tailored charcoal coat… the exact coat hanging in the hallway closet ten feet behind me. Her hair fell over her shoulders in dark, loose waves.

When she turned her head slightly to look down at the keypad, the light caught her profile.

The curve of her cheekbone. The slight lift at the tip of her nose. The posture, the subtle tilt of her left shoulder.

It was me.

It was my face, my coat, my walk.

"I was home," I choked out, the words tasting like copper in my mouth. I swung around to face Noel, my hands coming up in an involuntary gesture of defense. "Noel, listen to me! I was in our bed! I didn't leave the house! I was sick that night—I stayed up in the kitchen until two in the morning!"

"There are no logs on the security system for your car leaving the gate," Adelina supplied smoothly, leaning against the back of the sofa, watching me with mild, clinical interest. "Which means you took a rideshare or walked to the main road. The keycard used at the door was your personal spare—the one registered to your name."

"It isn't me!" I practically screamed, the emotion breaking through the rigid paralysis in my chest. I rushed toward Noel, reaching out to grab the lapels of his jacket, desperate to force him to see me, to feel the heat of my skin, to recognize the woman he had slept beside for three years. "Look at me! Look at my eyes, Noel! You know me! How can you look at a video screen and throw away three years of our life?"

Noel didn't pull away this time, but he didn't wrap his arms around me either. He stood there like a statue carved of ice, letting my hands clutch at his chest. Down inside his coat, I could feel the hard, steady thump of his heart… fast, but completely contained.

"I thought I knew you," he said, his voice dropping to a whisper that cut deeper than any yell. "I thought you were the girl who forgot her umbrella at the library. I thought you were the girl who cried when the old dog down the street died. I built a life with that girl, Melowie. I put my name on a house with her."

He reached down and gently, systematically, unclasped my fingers from his coat, dropping my hands into the space between us.

"Who are you?" he asked.

The question hung in the air, unanswerable, fatal.

He walked back to the glass table. He didn't look at Adelina, and he didn't look at the lawyer. He reached into his inner pocket, pulled out his pen—the silver one I had bought him for his thirty-second birthday… and unscrewed the cap with a sharp, deliberate click.

Without hesitation, he leaned over the table, placed his left hand flat against the paper, and signed his name across the bottom of the first page of the divorce petition.

The dark blue ink sank into the heavy paper, permanent and final.

He didn't cap the pen. He set it down on top of the document, aligned precisely with the signature line, and pushed the folder six inches across the glass toward me.

"Sign," he demanded.

The word was quiet. It wasn't spoken in anger; it was spoken with the absolute closure of a man who had already buried the body and was just waiting for the dirt to be thrown over the top.

I looked down at the white paper, at the silver pen resting on top of his fresh, bold signature.

My breath rattled in my throat. My left hand, cold and numb, moved entirely on its own… drifting downward, past the hem of my sweater, resting flat and protective against the low curve of my stomach.

Beneath my palm, hidden behind layer upon layer of cotton and linen, sat the small plastic stick with its two pink lines.

I looked up at Noel’s face. His jaw was set, his eyes fixed on me with a cold, unyielding disgust that expected nothing, believed nothing, and wanted nothing from me ever again.

I pulled my hand back from the pen. I didn't say a word.

Melowie My eyes were burning, glued to the red text on the screen, but my mind was stuck in the quiet living room of the penthouse...remembering the way Adelina’s hand had trembled around that silver pen, the way she had practically begged Noel to sign away three years of my life. She hadn't just stood by while a frame-job unfolded. She had laid the track. She had opened the door.Nathan slammed his fist down onto the stainless steel counter, making the empty ceramic coffee mug rattle. "It’s her," he breathed, the muscle in his jaw working frantically. "It’s been her from the start. She pulled the Veyra trust funds into Noel's firm using the ghost key, passed the biometric log to whoever played you on that video, and then called Nathaniel before Noel even landed from Chicago.""She didn't just want me out," I whispered, my voice sounding hollow, as if it belonged to someone standing on the other side of a glass wall. "She needed a criminal paper trail. If Noel divorces me on grounds

Melowie "What—no, don't be silly, Noel," Adelina stammered, a high, nervous lilt creeping into her voice that I had never heard in all my years of knowing her. "I mean... is that really what you're thinking right now? I’m your mother. I’m standing here trying to salvage what’s left of your reputation before the morning press catches wind of this mess!"She tried to force a light, maternal laugh, but the sound died instantly in the heavy space between them.Noel just stared at her, his eyes dark, unyielding, and hollowed out by a sudden, creeping doubt."Nathaniel," Noel said, his voice dropping into a flat, icy register that sent a shiver straight down my spine. "Leave the file. Take your coat and go.""Mr. Vare, the midnight deadline for the Italy freeze—""I said go."The attorney didn't argue a second time. He snapped his leather briefcase shut with a sharp, metallic click, offered a swift, uncomfortable nod toward the room, and slipped out the front door into the rain.Adelina st

  • The Billionaire's Ex-wife Is His Boss   Noel won't let go

MelowieThe room felt smaller now, trapped in a suffocating stillness. The single document detailing the million dollar transfer lay on the glass coffee table like a dropped blade. Nathaniel, the attorney, cleared his throat, adjusting the gold cufflink at his wrist before unthreading his pen. He kept his movements small, precise, as if any sudden shift might shatter the brittle atmosphere in the room."Mr. Vare," Nathaniel said softly, his voice carrying the practiced neutrality of a man paid to step over blood on marble floors. "We have the emergency freeze orders drafted. Once Mrs. Vare executes the signature on the final waiver. We can file the petition with the duty judge before midnight."Noel spared the paper no glance. Neither was Nathaniel. He was standing near the cold hearth, his dark eyes fixed on me, unblinking. The raw, volcanic fury from earlier had settled into something far more dangerous, a quiet, obsessive focus that made every muscle in my back tighten."Veyra,

MelowieThe hospital room was one I always hated. But I still had to find a way and be here. The electronic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound breaking the stillness of the private wing. And a steady, fragile pulse that felt like a clock counting down the last seconds of my life before I ever got the chance to live it.I fell to my knees beside the bed, the hard tile biting through the fabric of my trousers. I didn't care about the water soaked into my clothes or the cold dampness sticking to my skin. My hands scrambled across the white bedsheets, my fingers wrapping around my father’s hand. His skin was thin as parchment, cold, and spotted with age, the blue veins standing out like broken wires beneath the surface. The powerful, terrifying man who had built an empire from shadow and blood looked so small tucked under the clinical linen."Dad," I choked out, the word tearing raw out of my throat. My voice was small, cracked, and stripped of all the anger and resentment I h

  • The Billionaire's Ex-wife Is His Boss   What Do You Mean ?

Melowie I looked at the number again and turned the screen off. Not until I called Nathan to meet me. I pulled into the underground garage beneath the abandoned textile warehouse on 4th. Nathan, my brother, was already waiting by the support pillar, his shadow long and sharp against the wall. He didn't wait for me to kill the engine. The second the locks clicked, he yanked the passenger door open, the chill of the garage sweeping into the leather interior. "Show me," he demanded, his voice clipped, stripped of any greeting. My hands were still stiff from gripping the steering wheel. I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the folded duplicate copy of the petition I had left on the counter table, and handed it across the console. Nathan snapped it open under the overhead dome light. As his eyes tracked down the heavy black print, the muscle along his jaw tightened into a rigid knot. MelowieThe door didn't slam when I stepped out into the night; the heavy frame simply clicked shut, sealing the warm, bright house away behind me. I didn't make it to the car. My knees buckled three paces into the driveway, the slick wet gravel biting through the knees of my trousers as I collapsed against the side of the maybeck. My breath came in short, jagged gasps that tasted like copper and wet leaves. My hand was still clamped over my stomach, pressing through the fabric of my coat as if I could physically shield the tiny, invisible flicker of life inside me from the nightmare unfolding overhead. Up on the second floor, the warm yellow light of the master bedroom turned off.
