Ariana's pov ~

I couldn't breathe.

Not because the air inside the sleek, leather-lined interior of the Maybach was thin or suffocating, but because every single time Ethan glanced over at me with those piercing obsidian eyes, the crushing, unbearable weight of my secret pressed harder and harder against my chest.

The glittering lights of Manhattan slipped past the tinted window in long, blurred streaks of brilliant white and molten gold. Normally, I loved watching the city at night, losing myself in the endless rhythm of the metropolis. Tonight, I couldn't see any of it; the glass felt like a mirror reflecting only my own guilt.

All I could hear, echoing relentlessly inside the hollow chambers of my mind, was Eleanor's parting advice.

"The truth has a better chance than another lie."

The words battered against my skull like a caged bird.

"Ariana."

His deep voice cut sharply through the heavy silence of the car.

I blinked, forcefully snapping myself out of my spiraling thoughts, and turned slowly toward him.

"Hm?"

"You've been remarkably quiet since we left Mother's estate."

I forced a tight, brittle smile to my lips—a smile that felt anything but convincing.

"I'm just tired, Ethan. It's been a long evening."

His dark, sharp eyes narrowed ever so slightly, the analytical wheels turning behind his gaze.

"I don't think that's it."

My heartbeat stumbled, a cold drop of sweat forming at the base of my neck.

"What do you think it is, then?"

He leaned back comfortably against the plush leather seat, crossing one leg over the other, and exhaled a slow, controlled breath.

"I think something significant happened while you were closeted away with my mother."

For one terrifying, heart-stopping second, I thought my lungs had collapsed entirely. I thought he knew.

"We... we just talked."

"I figured that much," he murmured, a shadow of a smirk touching the corner of his chiseled lips. "My mother doesn't typically invite people into private, closed-door conversations unless she is deeply, fundamentally interested in them."

I looked away quickly, staring back out the dark window before my guilty expression could completely betray me.

"Maybe she was just trying to get to know her new daughter-in-law better."

"Did she scare you?"

A small, genuine, breathless laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it.

"A little bit."

He chuckled softly under his breath, the deep vibration rolling through the quiet space of the car.

"She has that effect on most people. Even my board members tread lightly around her."

Silence settled between us once more.

Only this time, it felt infinitely heavier.

Longer.

Infinitely more dangerous.

I clasped my hands tightly together in my lap, digging my fingernails into my palms, silently praying to every god imaginable that he wouldn't ask another question.

Instead, I felt something warm brush softly against my knuckles.

I looked down.

His hand.

He wasn't forcing anything. He wasn't wrapping his fingers around mine the way he usually did.

His large, warm fingers simply rested against mine, giving me every single opportunity to pull away, to retreat into my shell.

I didn't.

Slowly, carefully, as if walking across thin ice, he intertwined our fingers together, sealing our palms.

"You don't have to be nervous around my family," he said quietly, his voice losing all its corporate edge, turning remarkably gentle.

"They'll learn to love you just as much as I do."

My throat tightened so painfully I thought I might choke.

*If they knew the truth...*

Would they still look at me with respect? Would Eleanor still offer me a handkerchief and a warning?

*Would he?*

The car glided forward, coming to a smooth, elegant stop right in front of the grand stone steps of our mansion.

Outside, a soft autumn rain drizzled lightly from the dark, brooding sky, casting a slick sheen over the cobblestone courtyard.

Before I could even reach for the interior door handle, the door swung open. Ethan was already outside.

He had instructed the driver to stay put, walking around the vehicle himself to open my door, shielding me from the mist with his own broad shoulders.

I stared up at him in quiet disbelief as he extended his hand.

"You know there's a chauffeur for this."

"I know."

"Then why do you keep doing it?"

His expression softened, the hard lines of his jaw relaxing completely.

"Because I want to."

He held out his hand, waiting.

I swallowed hard and slipped mine into his strong, welcoming grip.

The comforting warmth of his touch traveled all the way up my arm, settling straight into my racing heart. Every single kind, unexpected thing he did made leaving him—or facing the inevitable day of reckoning—feel infinitely more impossible.

Inside the mansion, the familiar, comforting scent of polished mahogany and fresh white lilies welcomed us out of the chill.

The domestic staff greeted us quietly from the shadows before immediately disappearing down the hallway, giving us absolute privacy.

Ethan loosened his dark silk tie with one hand as we began to climb the sweeping marble staircase.

"You barely touched your dinner tonight, Aria."

"I'm just not very hungry."

"I don't believe you."

"I'll eat later, I promise."

He stopped dead in his tracks halfway up the stairs, turning to block my path.

"So stubborn."

I raised an eyebrow, trying desperately to summon a flicker of playful spirit.

"You've only just noticed?"

A genuine, breathtaking smile tugged at the corners of his lips.

"No."

His dark, magnetic gaze lingered on my face, drinking in every detail.

"I've noticed a lot of things about you lately."

Heat rushed instantly to my cheeks, hot and undeniable.

"You always thank the domestic staff by name," he murmured, his voice dropping into a register that made my stomach flip.

My smile faded, the breath catching in my throat.

"You remember everyone's personal histories."

*Eleanor had said the exact same thing.*

"And you always try to pretend you're completely fine, even when your hands are shaking and your eyes are giving you away."

I couldn't breathe.

Was he beginning to actually see *me*—the quiet, hidden twin beneath the silk and the lies?

Or was he simply paying terrifyingly close attention to a stranger he thought was his wife?

He stepped closer, closing the distance until only a single step separated us on the grand staircase.

"If something is bothering you..."

His voice softened, losing all its demanding edge, turning into a plea.

"...you can tell me. Anything."

The confession clawed its way violently up my throat, scratching against my vocal cords.

I wanted to tell him everything.

I wanted to look into those dark, obsidian eyes and confess that I wasn't the woman he had spent six years chasing. That every gentle smile I'd ever given him carried the suffocating weight of a stolen identity. That every kiss felt like borrowed time.

Instead...

I lied again.

"I'm okay, Ethan. Really."

He searched my face for several long, agonizing seconds, weighing every word, looking for the cracks in my armor.

Then, to my complete surprise, he reached out, his warm fingertips gently brushing against my cheek as he tucked a stray lock of dark-chestnut hair behind my ear.

"I just hope that one day, you'll trust me enough to tell me the truth."

The words hit me like a physical blow—a sharp, shining knife plunged straight through my heart.

I forced another brittle, meaningless smile to my lips.

"I hope so too."

But deep inside the dark, echoing chambers of my soul...

I wasn't entirely sure that day would ever come. And if it did, it would burn our entire world to ashes.

Ariana ~The air in the study went completely dead, charged with a sudden, lethal tension. I stood frozen beside the mahogany desk, the confidential manila folder still open beneath my trembling fingertips. Every drop of blood rushed to my head, and my heart hammered a frantic, deafening rhythm against my ribs. I had been caught red-handed snooping through his most secure files. There was no escaping it, no clever excuse left to invent. Ethan didn't shout. He didn't slam the door or storm across the room in a blind rage. Instead, he simply closed the heavy oak door behind him with a soft, deliberate click, locking it with a turn of the brass deadbolt. Slowly, measured stride by measured stride, he walked toward me. His dark obsidian eyes were unreadable, fixed entirely on my face with a terrifying, piercing intensity. When he reached the desk, he didn't look down at the open dossier exposing my secrets. He just stopped mere inches from me, towering over my frame, his jaw locked ti

Ariana ~The digital alarm clock glowing softly on the mahogany nightstand read 6:15 AM. Sunlight was just beginning to filter through the heavy velvet drapes of the master suite, casting long, golden stripes across the floor. In the quiet sanctuary of the bed, Ethan was still fast asleep, one heavy arm thrown securely across my waist, trapping me flush against his warm, solid chest. His breathing was deep and even, his face completely stripped of the ruthless, calculating mask he wore for the corporate world. For a fleeting moment, I wanted to freeze time right here. No security reports. No international background checks. No looming twin sister ready to reclaim her life. Just this morning, and the quiet comfort of being held by him. Carefully, so as not to wake him, I gently lifted his arm away from my waist and slid out from beneath the covers. The hardwood floor was cool against my bare feet as I slipped on a silk robe and tiptoed quietly toward the hallway. My instincts were

"Ariana pov"The heavy click of the bedroom door latching shut sounded like a gunshot in the silent hallway. My heart hammered against my ribs with a frantic, sickening rhythm as I stared at the spot where Ethan had just vanished. *His international security team.* If they pulled a complete, unredacted file on the woman living abroad, they would instantly discover that the person registered under that passport wasn't a distant sibling—it was me. The entire foundation of my stolen life was about to implode, and I had mere hours before the truth caught up to the fiction. Panic surged through my veins, hot and sharp, driving me up from the settee. I hurried down the hall and pushed open the door to the master suite, ready to fight, to argue, to weave another frantic layer of lies just to buy myself a few more days. Instead, the words died instantly in my throat. Ethan had stripped off his suit jacket, tossing it carelessly over the velvet bench. His crisp white dress shirt was unbut

Ariana pov ~The study door clicked open behind me, the heavy wood swinging inward with a slow, deliberate creak. I froze halfway down the upper hallway, my heart slamming violently against my ribs. Ethan’s footsteps on the hardwood were unhurried, yet they carried an undeniable, suffocating weight. When he reached the landing, he didn't pull me into his arms or offer a reassuring smile. Instead, he stepped into my line of sight, his tall frame blocking my path to the master suite. His dark obsidian eyes were utterly devoid of warmth, stripped down to a cold, razor-sharp focus that made my breath catch. "Sit down, Aria," he said, gesturing slowly toward the velvet settee near the window. It wasn't a suggestion; it was an absolute command. I swallowed the lump of dry terror forming in my throat and forced my legs to move, sinking slowly onto the edge of the velvet seat. Ethan remained standing over me, his hands sliding into the pockets of his trousers as he stared down, his jaw lo

In my anxiety to brush it off and escape back upstairs, I completely dropped the carefully curated cadence of breathless, dependent compliance that the real Aria always maintained around him. I didn't flutter my lashes, I didn't lean into his touch for reassurance, and worst of all, I spoke with a sharp, defensive snap that belonged entirely to me, not my twin.Ethan didn't let me step back. His fingers tightened slightly around my chin, not enough to bruise, but enough to hold me completely captive. His dark obsidian eyes swept over my face, stripping away the polite facade. The blind, all-consuming adoration that usually clouded his gaze when he looked at me suddenly fractured, replaced by a cold, razor-sharp analytical focus."You're not asking any follow-up questions," Ethan noted, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous whisper that scrape

Ariana ~The minutes ticked by like hours as I paced the length of the master suite, the sound of my bare footsteps muffled by the thick Persian rug. Ten minutes had passed since Ethan walked into his study. Then twenty. The silence of the sprawling mansion felt heavy, suffocating, vibrating with a tense energy that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I couldn't just sit there and wait for the axe to drop. Stepping out into the hallway, I crept down the grand staircase as quietly as possible, keeping to the shadows of the high-vaulted ceiling. Downstairs, the corridor leading to Ethan's private study was dark, save for a thin, sharp sliver of golden light spilling out from beneath the heavy oak door. As I drew closer, the muffled sound of a low, dangerous voice drifted out into the hallway. Ethan was on the phone. "...track the courier down," Ethan was saying, his voice stripped of any warmth, carrying that lethal, controlled fury that always signaled a storm. "I want t
