The name on the third line

The message remained on Elena’s phone.

THE THIRD HEIR IS ALREADY INSIDE YOUR FAMILY.

Nobody spoke.

Lily sat between Elena and Adrian in the back seat of the car, clutching the small bracelet Daniel had given them. Lydia watched the road through the window, while Catherine kept checking the rear-view mirror.

Adrian finally broke the silence.

“Who else could it be?”

Elena looked at him. “We already know the first two heirs. You and me.”

“Then why would someone send that message unless there's another person?”

Catherine leaned forward.

“Because the inheritance was never meant to be divided between only two people.”

Elena turned sharply. “You knew?”

“I suspected it,” Catherine replied. “But I never had proof.”

“Then tell us what you know.”

Catherine hesitated before reaching into her handbag. She removed a folded document, its edges worn and yellow.

“This was part of the original agreement. I kept a copy because I knew Alexander would eventually destroy the original.”

Adrian took it from her.

The document contained three lines beneath the heading:

THE FIRST HEIR SHALL RESTORE THE NAME.

THE SECOND HEIR SHALL REVEAL THE TRUTH.

THE THIRD HEIR SHALL DECIDE THE FUTURE.

Elena read the words twice.

“There's a third position,” she whispered.

“Yes,” Catherine answered. “But the name was removed.”

Lydia frowned. “Who would have the authority to remove a name from an inheritance agreement?”

“Someone who wanted the third heir hidden.”

Before Catherine could say more, Lily spoke.

“Mum?”

Elena turned towards her daughter.

“What is it, sweetheart?”

“Why does that paper have my birthday?”

Everyone looked at Lily.

She pointed to a small handwritten date beneath the third line. It matched the date of her birth.

Elena's stomach tightened.

Adrian took the document again, examining the faded writing.

“That can't be a coincidence.”

“She's a child,” Elena said quickly. “Being born into this family doesn't automatically make her part of your grandfather's inheritance.”

Catherine's expression changed.

“Actually, Elena, the agreement mentions a protected descendant. I always believed that person was Lily. But this document suggests something different.”

Lydia leaned closer.

“What are you saying?”

“I'm saying the protected descendant and the third heir may not be the same person.”

Silence filled the car.

Adrian looked at Lily, then at Elena.

“Someone has been hiding another part of this family from us.”

---

They reached a small guesthouse outside the city shortly before midnight.

Catherine insisted they stay there until they could determine whether Alexander's men were following them. Adrian checked the entrances while Lydia helped Lily settle into a room.

Elena remained in the sitting area, staring at Daniel's bracelet.

Her father had disappeared again.

She had spent years believing Daniel's greatest secret was the reason he had given her another family's name. Now she wondered how many other truths he had buried to protect her.

Adrian sat beside her.

“You haven't said anything since we arrived.”

“I keep thinking about Daniel.”

“He told us to run.”

“And now he's gone. What if we left him behind?”

Adrian took a moment before answering.

“We couldn't protect everyone at once. Daniel knew that.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“He raised me. Whatever he has done, I don't know how to stop worrying about him.”

“I know.”

She looked at Adrian.

“Do you think he knew about the third heir?”

“I think he knew more than he told us.”

A sudden knock interrupted them.

Lydia entered holding an old envelope.

“I found this inside the lining of Daniel's coat.”

Elena stood immediately.

“His coat?”

“It was in the car before we left. I didn't notice the envelope until now.”

Adrian opened it carefully.

Inside was a photograph of three people standing outside the old Vale estate.

Jonathan Vale stood in the middle.

A young woman stood beside him, holding a baby.

The third person was Daniel.

Elena stared at the photograph.

“That's my father.”

Lydia nodded.

“Look at the back.”

Adrian turned it over.

Three names had been written in faded ink.

JONATHAN VALE.

DANIEL BENNETT.

THE CHILD WHO MUST NEVER BE NAMED.

Beneath the names was a final sentence.

THE THIRD HEIR WAS CHOSEN BEFORE THE FIRST TWO WERE BORN.

Elena felt the room tilt around her.

“Before Adrian and me?”

Catherine took the photograph from Adrian.

“This changes everything.”

Lydia pointed at the woman holding the baby.

“Do you recognize her?”

Catherine stared at the photograph for several seconds.

Then her face lost its colour.

“It's Amelia.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“My mother?”

“Yes,” Catherine whispered. “But look at the child she's holding.”

Elena moved closer.

The photograph was old and slightly damaged, but the baby's face was still visible.

A small silver pendant hung around the child's neck.

The same pendant Lily had been wearing since she was born.

Elena looked towards the bedroom.

“Lily?”

Adrian immediately took the photograph back.

“No. Don't jump to conclusions.”

“But she has that pendant.”

“Then we need to find out where it came from.”

Catherine shook her head slowly.

“Amelia gave that pendant to someone before she disappeared. I thought it had been lost forever.”

Elena's voice trembled.

“Who was the baby?”

Nobody answered.

Then Adrian's phone rang.

The number was unknown.

He answered without speaking.

A man's voice came through, low and controlled.

“You have found the photograph.”

“Who is this?”

“You should stop looking for the third heir.”

“Where is Daniel?”

A brief silence followed.

“Your father is alive, Elena. For now.”

Elena grabbed Adrian's arm.

“Let me speak to him!”

The man ignored her.

“Ask Catherine what happened to the child Jonathan wanted to protect.”

Catherine went still.

Adrian's expression hardened.

“What did you do to Daniel?”

The caller gave a quiet, humourless laugh.

“Nothing that cannot be corrected. But you have made one mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“You brought the third heir into the same room as the people who are hunting them.”

The call ended.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then a soft sound came from the hallway.

Lily stood at the bedroom entrance.

She was holding the silver pendant in her palm.

“Mum,” she whispered, “why does this woman in the picture look like me?”

Elena rushed towards her.

But before she could answer, Catherine noticed something on the back of the pendant.

A tiny inscription.

Three words.

JONATHAN'S LAST HEIR.

Catherine slowly raised her eyes.

“Now I understand,” she whispered.

Adrian looked at her.

“Understand what?”

Catherine's answer was barely audible.

“Why Alexander wanted this child found before she was old enough to understand who she was.”

Elena pulled Lily close.

At that moment, another message appeared on Adrian's phone.

THE THIRD HEIR HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.

A second message followed.

AND THE PERSON WHO GAVE HER AWAY IS STILL ALIVE.

Victoria Blackwood told me it was an acknowledgement of the original agreement.
