The other side of the paper

“But I signed it before I knew what Alexander had written on the other side.”

Elena stared at Jonathan.

“You're saying you signed a document appointing Alexander permanent guardian?”

Jonathan nodded.

“I signed a blank page. Victoria Blackwood told me it was an acknowledgement of the original agreement. She said the trustees needed my signature before they could preserve the family's records.”

Robert looked furious.

“And you trusted her?”

“She was my daughter-in-law. I had no reason to believe she would use my signature against me.”

Adrian picked up the photograph.

“Can we prove the document was altered?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes. The original paper was kept in my private archive. Alexander only had access to a copy.”

Clara leaned forward.

“Then we need to find the original.”

Jonathan looked towards Robert.

“It's in the old family office.”

Robert shook his head.

“That office was sealed years ago.”

“Not completely,” Jonathan replied.

Elena stood.

“Then that's where we're going.”

Adrian looked at her.

“We'll go together.”

---

The Sealed Office

The old family office stood in the eastern wing of the Blackwood estate.

Nobody had used it in years.

Robert unlocked the door.

Dust covered the furniture, and several shelves had been left untouched.

Jonathan walked straight to a large desk.

“Victoria kept the documents here.”

He opened the bottom drawer.

It was empty.

Robert checked the shelves.

“Nothing.”

Elena noticed a framed photograph hanging behind the desk.

It showed Jonathan, Victoria and a young Alexander standing together.

She removed it.

There was a small metal compartment behind the frame.

“Adrian.”

He approached and examined it.

A keyhole was visible.

Jonathan reached into his coat and produced a small brass key.

“I kept this for years.”

The compartment opened.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Jonathan carefully removed it.

Across the front were the words:

ORIGINAL ACKNOWLEDGEMENT — NOT TO BE ALTERED.

He opened it.

The paper contained Jonathan's signature, but there was no appointment of Alexander as permanent guardian.

Instead, it stated:

I acknowledge the guardian's temporary responsibility to preserve the original agreement until all five families are represented. This responsibility shall not become permanent and shall not grant inheritance rights.

Robert read it twice.

“That's the original.”

Clara compared it with the photograph Alexander had submitted.

“He removed the second sentence and replaced it with his own declaration.”

Adrian nodded.

“That's how he turned temporary responsibility into permanent control.”

Elena looked at Jonathan.

“Why didn't you expose this earlier?”

Jonathan's expression became sorrowful.

“I thought I could repair the damage without destroying my family. Every year I waited made it harder.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“Your silence allowed him to hurt ours.”

Jonathan nodded.

“I know.”

---

Victoria's Letter

Another envelope lay beneath the original acknowledgement.

It contained a letter written by Victoria Blackwood.

Robert recognised the handwriting immediately.

“Alexander's mother.”

Jonathan unfolded it.

The letter was addressed to Alexander.

My son,

The agreement was never designed to give one family permanent control. Your father will never accept that you intend to change it.

I have secured the necessary signatures. Once the documents are registered, nobody will be able to challenge your authority without exposing the false records.

Remember, the families must never discover that the guardian's appointment was temporary.

Your mother.

Elena looked at Robert.

“She knew exactly what she was doing.”

Robert nodded.

“She helped him build the entire deception.”

Jonathan continued reading.

There was another paragraph.

If anyone questions the records, use the maternity registration. The children will be the easiest part of the story to confuse.

Amelia, who had joined them, covered her mouth.

“She planned to use children as evidence?”

Jonathan folded the letter.

“Yes.”

Victoria looked at Amelia.

“Mother, I'm sorry.”

Amelia shook her head.

“You didn't write those words.”

“But I grew up believing the lies.”

Amelia held her daughter's hand.

“Then we stop believing them.”

---

Alexander's Final Threat

Adrian's phone rang.

Alexander.

He answered and placed the call on speaker.

“Adrian.”

“What do you want?”

“I understand you've been searching through my family's private records.”

“Your family records are evidence of fraud.”

Alexander gave a short laugh.

“You think a few old papers can defeat me?”

“We have the original acknowledgement and your mother's letter.”

There was a pause.

Then Alexander's voice changed.

“You shouldn't have found that letter.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Why? Because it proves you knew the truth?”

Alexander ignored her.

“Bring those documents to the hearing tomorrow.”

“We will.”

“Then understand something. The trustees will not simply accept your interpretation. I have spent years building relationships with them.”

Adrian replied calmly.

“Relationships don't make forged documents genuine.”

Alexander's voice became colder.

“You're making a mistake.”

Elena took the phone.

“No, Alexander. The mistake was believing we would remain silent forever.”

She ended the call.

---

A Decision About the Future

Later, everyone gathered in the main sitting room.

The original agreement lay on the table.

Jonathan explained that the trustees would need to verify the documents and hear from each family before recognising the end of the guardian's authority.

Amelia spoke first.

“I will surrender my claim as original successor.”

Victoria looked at her.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes. I don't want my daughter or granddaughter growing up believing they must inherit a family war.”

Elena nodded.

“I will surrender my claim too.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Are you sure?”

Elena took a breath.

“I want Lily to have choices. I don't want her future decided by a document written before she was born.”

Jonathan looked at them.

“Then tomorrow, the agreement can finally be brought to an end.”

Robert raised one hand.

“Not until the trustees recognise the evidence.”

Everyone nodded.

---

The Unexpected Evidence

Just before midnight, Clara returned from the archive with a small package.

“I found something else.”

She placed it on the table.

Inside was an old recording device and a handwritten note.

Robert read the note.

“It's from Victoria Blackwood.”

Jonathan looked surprised.

“What does it say?”

Robert read aloud:

If Alexander ever attempts to make the guardian's appointment permanent, this recording must be presented to the trustees. It contains my full explanation of what happened.

Adrian switched on the device.

A woman's voice filled the room.

“I'm Victoria Blackwood. I helped my son alter the family agreement. I believed I was protecting our family's position, but I knew the changes were not authorised.”

Everyone listened in silence.

The recording continued.

“Jonathan never appointed Alexander permanent guardian. I used his signature on a document whose contents he had not approved. I also helped create false maternity registrations to confuse the identities of the children connected to the agreement.”

Amelia's eyes filled with tears.

Then the recording reached its final words.

“If this recording is being heard, I ask the trustees to reject Alexander's claim and restore the original agreement. My son must answer for what we did.”

The recording stopped.

Robert looked at Jonathan.

“That's the evidence we needed.”

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.”

Elena felt a strange calm settle over her.

For the first time, Alexander's version of the story had been challenged by more than suspicion.

They had the original agreement.

The original acknowledgement.

The letter.

And his mother's confession.

Adrian put his arm around Elena.

“Tomorrow, it ends.”

She looked at the documents.

“Tomorrow, the truth speaks for itself.”

But across the city, Alexander was already preparing for the hearing.

And he had one final person he intended to bring with him.
