Callum's POV

"Mr. Bronson, we just received word."

I looked up from the papers on my desk. My secretary, Denise, was in the doorway, looking worried. She held an envelope.

"What notice?" I asked.

She inched closer and handed it to me. "Rutherford & Co. They're terminating their contract with us. Right away."

My chest tightened. "That's the fifth this week."

Denise nodded. "Yes, sir."

I ripped open the letter. It was just like the rest of them—courteous words, but no real explanation. "Unstable market conditions," "temporary withdrawal," "will reconsider in the future." Excuses.

"Leave me," I said softly.

Denise stood up and departed from the office. I reclined in my chair, staring at the ceiling. Five clients within a week. Something was amiss. I had done everything according to the book. Why were they all pulling out simultaneously?

The phone on my desk rang. I picked it up.

"Callum, it's Stanton." One of my directors. His voice was abrupt. "We have to meet. Investors are in a panic. We can't keep waiting."

"I know," I told him. "Call the others. Meeting in an hour."

---

The boardroom was electric. Nine directors ringed the table. Papers rustled, phones were answered. No one smiled.

Stanton slammed a folder onto the table. "That's the fifth contract we've lost. What the bloody hell is happening, Callum?"

"I'm working on it," I replied bluntly.

"Working on it?" another director, Harris, snapped. "We're hemorrhaging, and you tell us you're working on it? We've lost more in one week than in the last two years altogether."

I ground my teeth. "You think I don't know that?"

"Then fix it," Harris retorted. "Before this ship goes down."

The room fell silent.

I pushed the file away. "This is not the end. I will get fresh backing. Inform your investors to hold on."

The others exchanged glances. Doubt was written across their faces.

The meeting ended with mutterings and groans. I stayed back, holding the edge of the table. Something was happening behind my back. It was intentional, like someone was pulling strings to deny me backing.

---

That evening, as I flipped through yet another set of reports, there was a knock on the door to my study at home.

"Come on in," I said without looking up.

Perfume smell wafted before I even saw her.

"Evangeline," my voice was rough.

"You look exhausted." She muttered

I looked up. She stood there in a pale pink colored dress, eyes full of sympathy.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"I heard about the contracts." She stepped closer, her heels clicking on the ground. "I just wanted to be sure you're okay. I was worried."

I leaned back, studying her. "Everyone's worried."

She sat down next to me without invitation. "I don't like seeing you like that."

I gave a dry laugh. "Don't pretend."

She let her head drop, her voice soft. "I do care. You might not think so, but I want to assist."

I studied her face. Her lips trembled, her hands folded neatly in her lap. She looked sincere.

"Assist?" I answered.

"Yes," she said quickly. "You could employ me. Officially. I can talk to my father. He still owns Wilder Group. If I can persuade him, he might be willing to invest. That would reassure the other investors. It might even bring some back."

I frowned. "You want me to give you a job?"

She nodded. "Yes. I know people judge me, but I can show them. Let me do this for you."

I slowly shook my head. "And why would you? What do you get out of it?

Her eyes filled up. She leaned forward barely an inch. "Because I love you, Callum. Always have. Even if you don't love me the same way… I want to be with you. I can't sit around and watch you suffer."

There was a moment of silence between us.

Evangeline was my first love. Six years back, those words out of her mouth would have sparked something within me, maybe even made me feel safe.

But now?

I felt nothing. No relief. No warmth. Just a hollow emptiness in my chest, like the words were less than the space between us.

".Fine," I said finally, ending the hesitation abruptly. "Do whatever. Convince your father. If he invests, I'll keep you."

She smiled softly, relief creasing her face. "You won't regret it."

---

Two days later, Evangeline came back with papers. She presented them to me with pride. "My father has consented to consider investing. He will review the numbers, but he believes in me."

At the next board meeting, she stood by my side as if she’d always belonged there.

“Gentlemen,” she said politely, “Wilder Group is willing to extend bridge funding to Bronson Corp. This will secure our cash flow for the next quarter.”

The board members exchanged glances, and one of them, Stanton, nodded approvingly. “That’s good news. Very good news. Miss Wilder, you’ve done us a great service.”

Others chimed in with congratulations. Harris, who had previously snapped at me, also smiled. "Well done."

I said nothing, sitting there. Relief poured over me, but I did not smile.

Later, following the meeting, Stanton came up and ruffled me on the back. "You've got a good woman working for you, Callum. Don't let her slip away."

I could manage a smile. "We'll see."

As the room emptied, I noticed Evangeline standing singly by the window. She wasn't smiling at the board anymore. She smiled to herself quietly, eyes glinting with victory.

I raised an eyebrow. Wondering what that was about.

---

That night, as I poured a glass of whiskey in my office, I couldn't help but remember Zephyrine. I thought about her cold gaze at the gala, the way she swept past me like an ice sculpture. My chest tightened.

And then the face of Evangeline appeared before me, smiling naively at the board, sneering behind my back.

For now, she had rescued the company. For now, the downfall of my company had stopped.

But I knew her all too well. Evangeline never did anything for nothing.

And I wasn't sure that I was ready to pay.

  • The Billionaire's Forgotten Wife   The Homecoming

POV: ZephyrineThe drive from the airport felt too long. Even though I’d spent most of my life in Aurelia, coming back now felt strange. The city looked the same — tall buildings, traffic, people everywhere — but it wasn’t the same for me. Not after everything.Isla was sitting beside me, her face pressed against the car window. “Mom, is this where you were born?”“Yes, sweetheart,” I said softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face.Julian leaned forward from his seat. “It’s noisy here.”Edmund chuckled from the front. “That’s how Aurelia always is. You’ll get used to it, little man.”Xavier, the quietest of the three, was holding his stuffed fox tightly. “I don’t like it,” he said quietly.I looked at him through the mirror. His voice was small, tired. He’d been weak lately — the doctors said it was just exhaustion, but I worried anyway. “It’s alright, love. You’ll like the house when you see it.”Adrian, who sat beside Edmund, turned slightly and smiled. “It’s a big place, Xavi

Five years later. The Hale estate was quiet that morning, except for the sound of laughter coming from the living room. Zephyrine stood by the door, watching as the triplets argued over who got to hold the crayon box first.“Xavier, let your sister use it,” she said patiently.“But she used the red already!” he protested, holding it tightly.Isla rolled her eyes. “You can’t even draw straight lines.”“I can too!”Zephyrine sighed, walking over to collect the crayon box herself. “Alright, enough. You’ll all share. Ten minutes each.”Jillian giggled. “Mom, he’s making the dragon look like a chicken.”“Because chickens can fly too,” Xavier said proudly. The tutor, Ms. Bennett, smiled awkwardly from her seat. “They were well-behaved today, Lady Zephyrine. Just a little… energetic.”“That’s every day,” Zephyrine replied, smiling faintly as she walked her to the door. “Thank you, Ms. Bennett. Same time tomorrow?”“Yes, of course. Have a good afternoon.”Once the tutor left, Zephyrine turned

  • The Billionaire's Forgotten Wife   Callum's Retreat

POV: Callum (Aurelia)The plane landed in Aurelia in the late afternoon, but I barely noticed the view outside the window. My mind was fixated on the same thing for what had to have been hours already: Adrian's fist across my cheek, Edmund's cold tone telling me to go back to Evangeline, and Zephyrine's silent glares that followed me everywhere.By the time I stepped out of the airport, my jaw ached. I massaged the side of my face and winced. The waiting driver saw that."Bumpy ride, sir?" he inquired."Just drive," I growled, climbing into the back seat.. Aurelia was as always, the skyscrapers and crowded streets flashing by, but I couldn't help but feel that I came back smaller than when I left. When we pulled up to my building, the doorman smiled at me. I nodded but did not engage in small talk. I simply wanted quiet.I stepped inside, set my bag on the floor, and proceeded to my office. Papers I had left on the desk were piled high, and the screen of my laptop flashed with messag

  • The Billionaire's Forgotten Wife   Zephyrine's Decision

POV: Zephyrine (Eldoria)I was in the sitting room, trying to read through a file of documents Adrian had given me the day before, when the door opened. Edmund came in with Adrian right behind him. The look on both their faces told me this was not a social visit."Set that aside for the time being," Edmund said, waving at the papers in my lap. "We need to discuss something."I laid the folder aside gently. "Is everything all right?"Adrian sat down opposite me, forward on the edge of his chair with his elbows on his knees. "Callum came yesterday. Grandfather had a meeting with him."I held my breath. "He came here? Why?Edmund rested both hands on the hilt of his cane. "Why do you think? A man like that never learns to let go. He wanted answers. Maybe he just wanted to convince himself he still had a place.""What did you tell him?" I asked, my voice tighter than I expected."The truth," Edmund said. "That he's finished here. That he should crawl back to that mistress he favored and l

  • The Billionaire's Forgotten Wife   Shattered Pride

POV: CallumMy jaw throbbed as I stood up. There was blood stuck in my mouth, and pride burned fiercer than the punch. Adrian's punch had landed hard, but it was the look on his face, that I wasn't worth the air he occupied — that cut deeper.Edmund tapped his cane on the ground. "You heard me, boy. This is done. Leave her alone."I rubbed the corner of my mouth and forced my voice tone. "You can't tell me what to do."Adrian stepped closer, his face hardening. "I can. And I just did. If you get anywhere near Zephyrine again, you'll have to deal with me first."I clenched my fists but didn't swing. I was hurting to, but I knew they'd love it when I lost my cool. I forced myself towards the door."Callum," Edmund's voice came behind me. "Men like you don't get second chances. You got your chance. Be grateful you're walking away with a bruise."I stopped in the doorway and faced him. "You think you know, but you don't. You don't know what happened between us."Edmund shook his head. "I

  • The Billionaire's Forgotten Wife   The Warning (Eldoria)

POV: CallumI didn't have much sleep following the gala. Every time I dozed off, Zephyrine's words echoed within my mind. I'm finally living — without you. The manner she said it, calming and serious, as if she had erased me from life.I stayed behind in Eldoria instead of boarding my return flight to Aurelia. Something within me simply couldn't leave. I justified it as business, but I knew better.Later in the morning, a man clad in grey suit showed up at my hotel. He handed me a card with little expression."Mr. Bronson," he said to me, "Mr. Edmund Hale has requested your presence. The address is on the card here. He requested that it be kept confidential."I examined the card. Private club, high-class, the sort only the richest families could enter without remorse. My gut tightened. I knew, Edmund Hale would come for me.When I arrived, an attendant escorted me down a hallway with slick wood and gold accents. The place reeked of old money and cigar. They brought me into a serene lo
