Sophia Miller tugged at the hem of her worn blazer, trying to make it look less cheap as she stared up at Blackwood Tower. Fifty floors of glass and steel that scraped the New York sky, reflecting the morning sun like a weapon. The building was so tall it made her dizzy. Cars honked loudly behind her, people in expensive suits rushed past her like she was invisible, but she stood frozen, clutching her daughter's hand.

This was her last chance.

In her purse was an eviction notice dated three days ago, stamped in angry red ink. In her bank account was $42.18, not even enough for a proper grocery run. Her rent was two months late, her fridge was empty except for Lily's milk, and the landlord had screamed at her yesterday that he would throw their things out on the street by Friday. And beside her, swinging her tiny hand, was the reason she couldn't give up, the only reason she woke up every morning.

"Mommy, you look pretty," Lily whispered beside her, clutching her tiny pink backpack with the broken unicorn keychain. Her four-year-old daughter with impossible blue eyes - his eyes. Those piercing, stormy blue eyes that had haunted Sophia's dreams for five years, eyes she saw every single day when she looked at her daughter. Lily was beautiful, too beautiful for their ugly life, with her golden curls and chubby cheeks.

"Thank you, baby. Remember what Mommy said? You sit quietly with Mrs. Jenkins at the daycare downstairs while Mommy goes for the interview, okay? Just for one hour, and then Mommy will buy you ice cream. Chocolate, your favorite."

Lily nodded solemnly, her blonde curls bouncing. "Is this where the prince lives, Mommy? Is he going to give us a castle? Is he nice?"

Sophia's heart clenched so hard she thought it would break into a thousand pieces. If only she knew how close to the truth she was. The prince did live here, but he was no longer a prince charming. He was a cold-hearted king now. "Something like that, sweetheart. Come on, my love."

The lobby of Blackwood Tower was everything Sophia was not. Cold marble floors so clean she could see her reflection, gold accents everywhere, a giant crystal chandelier that probably cost more than her entire life savings. People in suits that cost more than her yearly rent walked around with coffees that cost $8 each. The air smelled like expensive perfume and power, money and arrogance. She felt every eye on her cheap shoes from Payless, her thrifted blazer that was two sizes too big, her tired face with dark circles from working night shifts at the diner.

She held Lily tighter and walked to the front desk, trying to hold her head high even though she wanted to disappear.

The interview was for an Executive Assistant position at Blackwood Enterprises. Salary: $8,000 a month, plus health insurance and a housing allowance. Eight thousand dollars. That number had kept her awake all night. Enough to finally leave their tiny roach-infested studio in Queens where the heater never worked in winter. Enough to put Lily in a good kindergarten with real toys, not broken ones from the dollar store. Enough to stop choosing between paying for electricity and buying groceries. Enough to finally breathe.

She had applied online at 2 AM after Lily fell asleep, her hands shaking, never thinking they would call back. She had no Harvard degree, no connections, just desperation. When they did call yesterday, her phone almost dropped from her hand. She had cried for an hour in the bathroom so Lily wouldn't see.

What Sophia didn't know was that the CEO, Ethan Blackwood, personally conducted final interviews for anyone who would work on his floor. He trusted no one from HR, he trusted no one at all. He was known as the coldest, most ruthless billionaire in Manhattan, a man who fired people for looking at him wrong.

And Ethan Blackwood was Lily's father.

Five years ago, he was just Ethan - a charming, intense senior with a lopsided smile who sat next to her in Business Ethics at NYU. He wasn't a billionaire then, just a scholarship kid like her with big dreams and calloused hands from working construction summers to pay his tuition. He was funny, kind, he shared his fries with her, he tutored her for free. He took her virginity on a rainy night in his tiny dorm room, lit only by fairy lights, whispering that she was his forever, that he would love her until his last breath. He promised her the world, promised he'd come back after his father's sudden death forced him to fly home to Chicago for the funeral.

Then he disappeared without a trace. No note. No call. No text. Her number blocked. His social media deleted. His dorm empty. Just gone, like he never existed, like their love was just a dream she imagined.

She found out she was pregnant two weeks later. Two pink lines that changed her life forever. She was 20, alone, scared, vomiting every morning in the communal bathroom while her roommates laughed. She tried everything to find him, even went to his old dorm in the snow, begging. The RA said, "Ethan Blackwood? Oh, the heir? His family sent a private jet for him the night his father died. His father was Richard Blackwood, the billionaire. He's gone back to his real life now, honey. You should forget him."

Real life. A life that didn't include her. A life where she was just a dirty secret.

Now, the elevator doors opened to the 50th floor with a soft ding, and Sophia walked into a world of marble, gold, and cold silence. The entire floor was silent, intimidating, like a palace made of ice. A beautiful blonde receptionist with a headset and red lips looked her up and down with thinly veiled disgust, like she was trash that wandered in.

"Name?" she said, chewing gum loudly.

"Sophia Miller for Mr. Blackwood. 10 AM interview," Sophia said, her voice shaking.

Elena's hand was shaking so badly she almost knocked over the coffee on Alexander Sterling's mahogany desk. The white envelope shouldn't be there. It was too clean. Too innocent-looking. But Elena knew that handwriting on the front - that shaky cursive that wrote "FOR ALEXANDER STERLING - PRIVATE & CONFIDENTIAL."It was Mrs. Carter.Mrs. Carter, the retired nurse from St. Mary's Private Hospital. The only person on earth who knew what really happened five years ago after the Sterling Foundation Gala. The only person who helped Elena disappear that night when she realized she was pregnant and Alexander was already engaged to Victoria Beaumont."Your 9 AM is here," her assistant, Mia, whispered from the doorway, holding the envelope like it was a bomb. "Mrs. Carter left this at reception. She said you must give it to Mr. Sterling today. She said... she said the boy deserves to know his father before it's too late."Elena's blo

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Heir    Chapter 9: The Woman who Stole My Life

Happiness in the penthouse lasted exactly 47 minutes.Sophia knew because she checked the clock on the gold wall. 7:03 AM - Ethan was kissing her. 7:50 AM - Lily was eating pancakes shaped like stars while Ethan showed her how billionaires make coffee with a machine that looked like a spaceship. And at 7:50 AM, the private elevator dinged.Ethan didn't look up. Only three people had the code to his private elevator. His assistant, his best friend, and his mother. The doors opened.Margaret Blackwood walked in like she owned the 51 floors, because technically she did own 30% of them. Perfect hair, perfect pearls, perfect cold face. She was 60 but looked 45, the kind of rich woman who never sweats. Her eyes scanned the kitchen. Lily in Ethan's oversized t-shirt, syrup on her face. Sophia in her cheap nightgown, hair messy from kissing. Ethan in pajama pants, barefoot, laughing.Margaret's perfect face cracked.

Morning in the penthouse did not feel like morning in Queens. In Queens, morning was alarm at 5 AM, cold water, Lily crying for cereal, running for the bus.In the castle 51 floors up, morning was sunlight pouring through glass walls like gold, no alarm, the smell of pancakes, and Lily still asleep on Ethan's chest, drooling.Sophia woke up slowly, confused. Her head was on something hard, warm, moving up and down. Boom-boom. Heartbeat. Not hers. She opened her eyes.Ethan Blackwood's bare chest. She was sleeping on Ethan Blackwood's chest. On the other side of him, Lily was still asleep, tiny hand fisted in his shirt.Oh my God.Sophia sat up so fast she almost fell off the castle bed.Ethan's eyes opened instantly. Blue, alert, even half-asleep he looked like a CEO who never truly sleeps."Morning," he said, his voice rough from sleep, sexy and low, making Sophia's stomach do things it h

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Heir    Chapter 7: The Thunderstorm

Sophia woke up to thunder. Not the sound. The shaking.Lily was trembling in her arms, her little face buried in Sophia's chest, her blonde curls damp with sweat, her whole body shaking like a leaf."Mommy, boom boom scare Lily," she whimpered, her voice tiny, broken. The penthouse windows were rattling. New York was having one of those violent late summer storms, rain lashing the glass 51 floors up, lightning turning the giant living room white every few seconds. The palace in the sky was suddenly scary.Sophia held her tighter, humming the lullaby she always sang in their little studio when thunder came - the one about the brave little mouse who wasn't scared of anything. In the studio, the thunder was muffled by thin walls and noisy neighbors. Here, in glass and marble, it was everywhere."It's okay, baby, it's okay, Mommy here, brave mouse here—" she whispered, rocking her.But Lily wasn't calming. She had alway

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Heir    Chapter 6 : The First Night In The Castle

The castle had too many rooms.Lily counted them. Or tried to. She got to seventeen before she got lost and ended up back in the giant kitchen where her mother was sitting on a stool that was too tall, her cheap waitress uniform looking wrong against the marble island that cost more than four years of her rent.Sophia hadn't spoken since she said "Yes, we can stay." She was holding a glass of water Ethan had given her with hands that wouldn't stop shaking. The water was from a bottle that probably cost $20. Everything in this penthouse was too expensive, too clean, too perfect for a girl like her who still had $42.18 in her bank account.Ethan was in his walk-in closet, on the phone with his lawyers, his voice low but furious, saying words like "revoke," "freeze," and "restraining order." Even when he was destroying his mother for them, he sounded like a king giving orders."Ethan Blackwood is not a man you say no to, Sophia," she remembered his m

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Heir    Chapter 5 : Confronting The Devil

The private elevator didn't go down. It went up. Sophia clutched Lily tighter as the elevator rose one more floor, to the 51st floor - a floor that didn't even exist on the public buttons, a floor that only Ethan's fingerprint could access. The doors opened directly into a home. No, not a home. A palace in the sky. Floor-to-ceiling windows everywhere, marble floors so clean Lily could see her reflection, a giant kitchen with an island bigger than Sophia's entire studio apartment, toys that had never been touched still in boxes in the corner, as if someone had bought them hoping a child would one day come. "This... this is your house?" Sophia whispered, her voice echoing in the huge, empty, cold space. It was beautiful, but it was lonely. Like its owner had been lonely for five years. "Our house," Ethan corrected, setting Lily down gently. Lily immediately ran to the windows, her tiny hands pressed
