Lyra POV

After some moments, I arrived at the restaurant. But something felt off. The staff avoided my eyes. The air was tense. I walked straight into the office as Mr. Johnson was waiting at the desk, arms crossed.

"Finally," he said as soon as I stepped inside. "You're fired."

The words hit harder than anything I couldn't imagine.

"What?"

"You heard me," he said softly. "You're no longer needed here."

My chest tightened out of shock. "What did I do?"

He scoffed. "Don't act innocent. Do you know who you offended last night?" He asked.

My mind raced as I remembered what had happened last night.

"The VIP customer. The arrogant man who grabbed my waist. The one I had pulled away from."

"I didn't do anything wrong," I said firmly.

"You embarrassed him," Mr. Johnson snapped.

"And now I am paying for the price of your attitude."

"So you are firing me because I refused to let a customer touch me?" I asked while looking at him in disbelief.

"I'm firing you because you are replaceable." The words sliced through me. And at that moment, I felt everything was gone. The job. My relationship and soon my mother."

I let out a slow breath.

"Fine," I said quietly. "I understand."

Because at that moment, what could I say? He had already made his decision. I turned to leave, adjusting the black bag I carried with me in my arm. But just as I reached the door, a voice from nowhere called out to me.

"Miss Cole."

I froze.

I heard the voice calling my name from behind. The voice seemed deep, cold, and a bit familiar. Slowly, I turned around. And there he was. The man from last night. He was standing in the center of the restaurant like he owned the world.

He was tall, imposing, and dressed in a tailored suit that made him look untouchable. His dark eyes locked onto mine as he scanned me with an intensity that made my knees weak.

Mr. Johnson straightened immediately.

"Sir, I didn't expect you to come personally. You..." And before Mr. Johnson could speak, the man commanded with a calm tone.

"Leave us."

It wasn't a request. My boss hesitated for half a second before quickly disappearing. And just like that. It was only the two of us. The atmosphere in the restaurant felt silent, heavy, and dangerous. Within a blink, he shook a step and walked toward me. And each step that he took felt like a warning.

"You cost me something last night," he said, his voice low and controlled.

Despite the flammable aura and cliché, I lifted my chin. Slightly, I refused to back down even though I could feel the fear creeping in.

"And you tried to touch me without my permission," I replied with a bold face.

A flicker of something passed through his eyes. It showed interest, amusement, and danger, but then he smiled, and his expression was like a man who had just found something interesting.

"Good," he said softly.

My brows furrowed. "Good," I responded.

"Yes." He stopped right in front of me, his presence overwhelming. He was only two steps' distance from me. "Because I don't like weak women."

My heart pounded.

"What do you want?" I asked, as I tried to read his mind, but it was impossible.

His gaze didn't leave mine.

"I heard your conversation," he said.

My blood ran cold.

"What?" I asked.

"Forty thousand," he continued calmly. "That's how much you need, isn't it?"

My heart skipped for a moment. How on earth did he know about my present or even what I am going through at the moment? I became a bit puzzled; my breath hitched. Or has he been spying on me, a complete stranger? I thought to myself.

"How do you...?"

"I can give it to you." He cuts in, not allowing me to question him.

"And why the hell would I collect money from a total stranger?" The world stilled as my hope flickered and then died just as quickly because nothing in life came for free.

"And what do you want in return?" I asked carefully.

He smiled deeply with a mysterious grin on his face.

"Marry me." He said

My heart stopped.

"...What?"

"You heard me," he said, his voice turning colder. "A contract marriage. You become my wife, and I pay for your mother's treatment."

I paused, my pulse roaring in my ears.

"This is insane. Completely insane. Do I look like a product that can be bought from the mall? Why me?" I asked.

For a moment, he didn't answer. Then unexpectedly, he leaned closer. Close enough that his voice brushed against my skin. I could feel his scent; it was so irresistible to deny.

"Because," he said quietly, "you are perfect for what I have planned."

A chill ran down my spine. There was something different about the way he said it. It wasn't just business. It was something darker. More dangerous. I swallowed hard.

"Well," he rubbed his chin. "You can go back to the hospital and watch your mother die."

The words hit like a gunshot.

"Watch your tongue," I shouted back at him.

I became furious, my hands clenched at my sides.

Silence filled the space between us.

This wasn't a choice but a trap. I didn't know who he was or what he wanted, but one thing was clear to me: that the moment I said yes, I could save my mom's life, and nothing in my life would ever be the same.

He snapped his finger once, and then instantly, a man in a black suit came straight walking towards us, holding a briefcase. He signaled the man in the black suit, and before I could think twice, the briefcase was opened, as it contained a lot of cash.

"Accept it," he said. "And you agree to my terms."

I stared, my mind racing, my heart pounding. I became stuck in my own deck. And then I whispered to myself, what am I getting myself into?

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 37: Epilogue: Two Years Later

Epilogue: Two Years LaterLyra's POVSylvester Cane was sentenced to eighty-one years in federal prison fourteen months after his arrest, a number so large it had stopped meaning anything specific to me somewhere around the second decade, the way enormous distances stop registering as distance at all. I did not attend the sentencing. I had built the thing that ended him, and I had testified when the prosecution needed me to, and somewhere in the year that followed I had decided, carefully and deliberately, that I did not owe him one more minute of my attention beyond what justice required. My mother felt the same. We sent Martin instead, who came home that evening and told us only that it was over, and that the man had looked, in the end, considerably smaller than the shadow he'd cast across three decades of other people's lives. Harlan's family received a settlement from what remained of Sylvester's seized assets, arranged quietly by Alexander's legal team without either of us ever n

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 36: Veronica

Lyra's POVI hadn't met Alexander's mother before that day at the facility, but the day the man in the grey suit had stood outside her door with a message meant to send us running in the wrong direction… and I found, in the weeks that followed our real wedding, that I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that I'd come within a single hallway of her without ever actually seeing her face."You've never taken me to meet her," I said to Alexander one evening, several weeks after the wedding, both of us tangled together on the study sofa with the particular slow ease of two people who had stopped needing to fill every silence. He was quiet for a moment, his fingers moving idly through my hair. "No," he said. "I haven't.""Why," I asked. And it was just a genuine question, offered the way I'd learned to offer him difficult things now, plainly, without armor around it, trusting he'd meet it the same way."Because visiting her is complicated," he said slowly, "in ways I haven't found an easy

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 35: Vows We Actually Meant

Lyra's POVWe were married again on a Saturday in October, eight months after the first wedding, in the garden behind the mansion where I had once stood at a desk with my knees pulled up drinking cold coffee, watching a man decide whether to let himself be known. There were no cameras this time, none of the careful staging that had accompanied our first ceremony, no press release drafted in advance to control how the story would be told. There was a small tent, sixty chairs, and every single person in them there because we had actually wanted them present, rather than because a guest list needed to look a certain way for people who mattered to Alexander's business interests. Martin walked me down the aisle, since my father was gone and I had decided, somewhere in the last eight months, that the person who deserved that particular honor was the one who had spent his whole life protecting me the best way a younger sibling could, even when protecting me meant admitting he'd been wrong."

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 34: What Survives the Light

Lyra's POVThree months after Sylvester Cane's arrest, I stood in a gallery in the Meatpacking District with a glass of champagne I hadn't touched and looked at forty of my own paintings hanging on white walls under lights someone else had chosen, and felt, for the first time in my adult life, entirely unafraid of being seen. The show hadn't started as a show. It had started as a single email from a curator named Delphine Marchetti, who had apparently found the twenty-three-page document I'd built to take down Sylvester Cane, traced it back to my name through the credit line Christopher had insisted on including against my initial objections, and spent two weeks trying to convince me that what I'd built wasn't a legal exhibit but art, real art, the kind that belonged on walls instead of buried in federal case files."I don't do this professionally," I'd told her on the phone, the same excuse I'd been giving myself for a decade."You did it under a pseudonym, professionally, for six ye

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 33: The Cost of Winning

Alexander's POVThe weeks that followed did not feel like victory so much as excavation, but the slow, unglamorous work of digging out from beneath something enormous that had finally, after thirty years, been allowed to fall. My board convened an emergency session four days after the arrest. I sat across a table from eleven people who had known me for the better part of a decade and watched them decide, in real time, how much of what I had built they still trusted."The Renova exposure alone is projected at two hundred million in market correction," the CFO said, sliding a printed summary across the table with the particular grim efficiency of a man delivering news he'd rather not be associated with. "That's before litigation costs, before the SEC settlement, before whatever the congressional hearings decide to extract from us as an example.""I'm aware of the figures," I said."Then perhaps you can explain," said Whitmore, the board's longest-serving member, a man who had sat on thi

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 32: The Woman Who Warned Me

Lyra's POVCeleste Varro came to the mansion nine days after Sylvester Cane's arrest, unannounced, past a security detail that let her through only because Alexander, watching the gate camera from his study, had said one quiet word. "Let her in…" with an expression I couldn't quite read.I met her in the entrance hall, the same one where I'd once stood beside Alexander while she assessed me over a handshake at a gala in Monaco. She looked different now. Less like a woman who had personally decorated every room she entered, and more like someone who had spent the last week and a half being interviewed by federal investigators, which, I would learn within the next ten minutes, was exactly what had happened."I won't stay long," she said, before either of us had said anything else. "I came to say something, and then I'll go, and you can decide afterward whether you ever want to see me again. I'd understand either way."I said nothing, waiting."I worked for him," she said. "Sylvester. Fo

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 6: Where it all Begins

Alexander POVI watched how she sat close to me, but silently, I admit that she looked so beautiful and gorgeous in her glamorous outfit. Captivated by her grace and charm. My eyes lingered on her, admiring features that seemed to glow with an inner light. I hoped she wouldn't catch me staring, wan

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 5: The Woman He Chose

Lyra POV I woke up feeling unfamiliar with where I was. My eyes fluttered open slowly, blinking against the soft glow of light filtering through tall glass windows. For a moment, I just lay there, staring at the ceiling, my mind blank, my body feeling heavy, like I had been dropped into someone els

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 4: The Rules of Being His Wife

Lyra POV I didn't remember how I got out of the restaurant. The first thing I felt was relief. The evening air was hitting my face like a slap. I tightened my grip on my bag and went to the hospital. That was all that mattered. The moment I stepped into the hospital, only one thing mattered to me

  • The Billionaire's Hidden Price    Chapter 3: The Choice That Broke me

Lyra POVCustomers began to come into the restaurant, and that diverted the attention between the stranger and me. Before I could settle my mind, he talked."I don't stay in crowded places, and as you can see, the restaurant is getting full. Come with me to the VIP room." He said with a firm voice,
