Had someone told me this would happen, I would have sworn they were imagining itI buttoned my shirt just as my phone vibrated.A call from the head of my security.“Hello,” I answered.“Sir, we've found the information on Ms. Nwosu's grandmother.”I sat straighter. “I'm listening.”“She suffered a stroke which left her unconscious for days. She's recovered a great deal.”“Why is she still in the hospital?” I asked.“Amira is unable to pay the bills.”Silence followed. She was in debts and didn't bother to tell me? So much for trusting me.I raked my fingers through my hair. “How much are we looking at?”“About half a million.”“Half a million dollars?”“No, sir. I meant naira, and not dollars.”I rose from my chair and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. Something wasn't adding up.Personally, I'd given her five hun

—Amira—My breath jackhammered. This should be the moment any girl would yell at the driver to stop the car, then take to her heels. But I didn't. I sat quietly, my eyes drifting to his lips, recalling the moment they captured mine... how warm and sweet they'd felt.Nathaniel smirked as if reading the chaos going on in my head. He leaned closer and kissed my ear.“Do we have an understanding?”I shivered, heart pounding. “Yes.”“Good.” He straightened and held my gaze. “Because next time, I won't be asking. I'll take what's mine... I'll be ruthless about it.”My breath caught. Wasn't I supposed to be screaming and running? But I inched toward him, my panties soaking with arousal.“You feel that?” he whispered. “That’s you losing control... that's you wanting to be ruined.”A moan slipped from my lips. “Nathaniel—”“Shhh,” he placed a finger over my lips. “Say it. Say it, that you want to be ruined by me.”“I–I want to be ruined by you,” I stuttered. He let out a small groan before sl

—Amira—The whole room floated away, desire blooming like a forbidden flower inside me.When had he flown back? He was supposed to be in a meeting with the president.“Mr. Rivera?” Joyce squealed and scooted to his side. “I-I thought you wouldn't make it.”“It's simple courtesy to honor an invitation,” he replied, eyes still locked on me. Before he finally looked at her. “Happy birthday.”She grinned and scratched her ear. “Thank you, sir.”At the moment he looked away, it was as if my senses returned. But his cologne continued to unravel me... reminding me of the times I was in his arms.I sipped my drink and fidgeted with the stem of my glass.“So glad to have you, sir,” Joyce said, and led him to our couch. “Amira. Come over,” she beckoned.I let out a breath and joined them.Conversations resumed, and the DJ went back to work, throwing in an afrobeat that thumped the speakers.“Good evening, sir,” I mumbled. There was a smirk in his eyes as if he were replaying how he’d messed with

Only to hear his convoy reversing and slipping back into the midnight traffic.Tears spilled down my cheeks. He was messing with me.Perhaps I should resign and stay away from him.But that was worse... I couldn’t just throw away a million naira job, not when my family was in tight corner.I gathered myself off the floor and went to my room. Still in my party clothes, I climbed into bed and closed my eyes. But sleep eluded me.I tossed back and forth in bed and literally watched as daybreak came. That morning, Nathaniel didn't show up at the office. —Amira—Evening arrived faster than I expected. One minute I was in the office... the next I was in the hospital, helping Mama commode from the bathroom.“H–he invited you to a banquet?” she asked.“Yes, Mama.”She sat on the bed. “So he bought clothes for you yesterday, is inviting you to a high profile event, yet insists he doesn't remember you?”I sighed. “That's what he says. I–I think he's still angry that I chose the money and not him.”Last night, I had opened up to Mama about everything that happened abroad. She had broken into tears and apologized as if it was her fault.I glanced at Oluchi drawing on the couch.“Go ahead and attend the banquet,” Mama said, and I met her gaze again. “Your boss seems like a good man.”A smile flitted across my lips as I pulled her into my embrace. “Thanks, Mama.”She patted my back. “Hurry. Or you'll be late.”“Bring something for me,” Oluchi blurted.Grinning, I walked to her and kissed her temple. “I promise, I will.”I glanced one more time
