Lara couldn’t believe it.
She graduated Summa Cum Laude but she was given the position of Assistant to the Assistant? Clerical!
She wanted to walk out. What did her brilliant husband think of her? Did he think she knew nothing? Given that she was a fresh grad. She could still accept an Assistant position.
But to be the Assistant of the Assistant, did Migo think so lowly of her abilities?
What insulted her more was what the HR Manager told her. They gave her that position because there was really no vacancy. That if not for her backer, she wouldn’t have been accepted into the company.
Yes! The HR Manager was that straight forward! Lara felt like the latter was being personal with her.
"I have no idea who endorsed you, but you are referred directly from the office of the CEO. So, I guess he’s someone not to be taken lightly. But don't mistake that because you have an influential backer, you will receive special treatment here," Ms. Salvacion lengthily said.
What if she told her that she was the wife of their boss? Lara got more annoyed when she remembered Migo’s last instructions to her on her way there.
"You are not allowed to tell anyone that you are my wife, understand?" he said, as if the idea ever crossed her mind.
She wasn’t even using his family name!
Nevertheless, she agreed. She still didn’t know at that time that he was going to make her an Assistant to the Assistant.
In her heart, she was still hoping that he would give her a good starting position based on her credentials. Take, for example, a position that would allow her to see him at work.
But because she was made to be the Assistant to the Assistant that was considered one of the lowest rank and file positions in the Administrative Department, she would not have the chance to even shake the hand of her mysterious husband.
Lara was gritting her teeth secretly. She was annoyed with the manager, who was obviously thinking that, because she was just referred to in the company, she was someone ignorant.
'Very unprofessional,' she thought. To think that she was a manager, but the way she was raising an eyebrow was like she was ready for a petty fight. Did she go through the right process of employment?
Did Migo know of his employee’s attitude?
"I understand, Ms. Salvacion," she said when the Manager already looked pissed at her unresponsiveness.
"You will start formally tomorrow. For now, I will ask somebody to orient you with the company policies. You’re lucky that you are not required to submit the pre-employment requirements." There was that tone again that was annoying Lara.
"Although if I'm the one to decide, I will still require you to provide the necessary documents," Ms. Salvacion added, as if challenging her.
"I can submit the requirements if needed. If you would kindly give me the list, Ms. Salvacion," she said courteously.
The Manager raised her artificial eyebrow once more. If Lara could guess her age, maybe she was in her early thirties or maybe late twenties. She was young for such a managerial position. She couldn’t understand her mean attitude but Lara decided to just let it slide.
Hoping that after that informal interview, she wouldn’t see her again.
Ms Salvacion didn’t express disapproval and gave her a long list of required pre-employment documents.
“I am not forcing you. But everyone in this building submits their documents first before starting their jobs.”
‘Fine! Fine!’ She thought irritably, wanting to slap her face with police clearance the very next day. It was one of the requirements that she saw in the list.
"Okay," Ms Salvacion closed the folder that she gave her earlier with her academic records. She even seemed doubtful of her credentials. "I'll pass you to the person who will orient you. You will start formally tomorrow.”
When the annoying manager was already out of her sight, she took her phone out and called Uncle George.
“Miss Lara, are you allowed to use your phone at work?” the old man asked at once.
“Uncle, did Migo tell you that I’d be an Assistant to the Admin Assistant?” she grumbled.
Even if she wanted to complain directly to her husband, she didn’t have his number. He was very uncommunicative that even that small matter must be kept a secret from her. If she needed anything, she should let him know through Uncle George.
“He didn’t tell me what your job would be, Miss Lara. But if he thinks that it’s what is best for you, then just obey him.”
Uncle George was never really on her side. Lara wanted to roll her eyes. But she just sighed in defeat.
“I will send you a list of clearances that I need to submit here. Please see how you can help me, Uncle,” she told him instead. She saw Ms Salvacion talking to someone through the glass wall. Maybe it was the person who would orient her next.
“Okay.”
Lara spent the next two hours of her life listening to the company’s history, policies, vision, mission, objective, etc. The other parts were already memorized by Lara by heart since. Of course, she’s expected to know, right? Like hello? She was the wife of the owner!
But it’s still funny how she knew the history, the company’s humble beginnings, and yet, her husband, who currently holds the highest position, remained invisible to her in the last sixteen years. She couldn’t understand that. Why was Migo so mysterious?
“I’ll introduce you to your Department in the afternoon,” Ms. Dizon told her. Compared to the manager, the former was diplomatic and gentle. “It’s already lunch time. Did you bring your own lunch?”
“I’ll just buy outside, thanks,” she answered.
“Okay. Please be back by one o’clock.”
She didn’t go far. Because beside Migo’s office building was one of the malls he owned. It was the one farthest to their house. They lived in the north of the city while Miguel held office in the south.
Lara didn’t even know that Miguel owned the sky scraper where his office was. And here she was thinking that she knew the company’s history. She was not able to account for that building. Or maybe because, just like what Uncle George said this morning, Migo was venturing into real estate as well.
She heaved a sigh as she crossed the street. She would obey Migo for now. She would see how her employment under him would go.

Lara’s task was to assist the Admin Assistant, whom she had already met as Kylene. The latter was okay, she was also friendly. And her duties and responsibilities were document filing, answering the phone, sorting out emails, photocopying files, and anything clerical.
Lara was depressed because she knew she could do better than those things. She was sure that if she were to apply to another company, she wouldn’t be given such a kind of job. She was not being arrogant, but she knew she deserved better. She could do better.
But she would prove to Miguel that she could be wherever he would put her. Lara will do her best. He would let him know she was capable of anything!
She thought it was just that easy.
What she was not prepared for was that Migo had a lot of mean employees. And Lara’s patience was just about to be tested.
“Have you already seen the CEO?” Lara randomly asked Kylene one boring day while she was photocopying memos to be distributed to the company's various departments. "Mr. Villareal? Not yet. Whenever there’s a meeting, he would only ask till the managerial level. Besides, he has his own elevator that goes directly to his floor,” Kylene answered. The woman was just a few years older than Lara. She also noticed that she was an introvert. She does not join the others in their department. In fact, she was being bullied. They were passing off their paperwork to Kylene. "He’s mysterious even here,” she whispered to herself. "You’re saying something, Lara?" "Nope," she said, shaking her head. She took the photocopied papers to another table and started sorting them."Here’s more. It’s needed in thirty minutes!"The papers that Lara'd been sorting flew in the air when Lizzie slammed a thick folder on the table. If she hadn’t turned her back at once, she would’ve seen Lara’s dagger looks.“L
Lara grinned as she slipped the signed divorce papers into the photocopied files for the CEO. She would let him know of her intention to divorce him and that she was dead serious about it.Enough was enough. She was so done. If Miguel wouldn't take her seriously, then he should just let her go on her own.She didn't need him anymore because she was grown now.'That sounds so ungrateful, Lara,' her mind quickly rebuked.Fine. She owed Miguel everything she had now. But couldn't she have her own life now? Migo should set her free and let her live her life away from him. Because why would he keep her if he didn't have plans of letting her see him? What was the purpose of marrying her when she couldn't see even the tips of his hair? Couldn't they be friends at least? What was Migo's reason for being so mysterious? What was she supposed to do with him?Lara was tired. She didn't want to do anything with Miguel anymore!"Why are you smiling like that, Lara?" Kylene asked curiously as she a
Lara literally looked up when Migo stopped in front of her. She could still remember how tall he was when she was just a little girl. But why did she feel like she hadn't grown at all? Even now, she had to crane her neck to look him in the eye.Lara realized that Miguel Villareal was a tall man. He exuded an intimidating aura. Power radiated from him just from his posture alone. His gaze seemed to come straight from the North Pole, and yet, despite the coldness, the intense anger in his eyes couldn't be denied. What did she do that offended him?'Duh, Lara, do you even have to ask? Look at yourself! You're a mess! You got caught in the act of fighting! How embarrassing. I'm sure Migo would never allow anyone to know you're his wife!'"What are you doing?" he asked.Lara felt her throat constrict. When she opened her mouth to speak, no sound came out. Was she truly speechless?First of all, aside from the familiar features of his face, Migo's total appearance had changed. And Lara hadn
Because Lara was still in a bad mood, after being dropped off at work the next day, she didn't go inside the office. She made her driver believe that he had accomplished his task of taking her to work. But once the driver was out of sight, she took a taxi straight to Anastacia's condo."I'm leaving in an hour," her friend said, as if reluctant to let her in. Anastacia was busy ironing her hair."I need someone to talk to, Tasya!" Even though she wasn't welcome, Lara entered and slumped on her friend's bed, while Anastacia quickly returned to her vanity."Okay, shoot. I guess I can multitask," Tasya said, still engrossed in her hair. She sighed in exasperation."I've seen Migo," she said, and was startled when Tasya suddenly screamed."Ouch!" Anastacia winced, having burned herself due to Lara's unexpected revelation. "So, what does your guardian look like? Is he handsome, this famous but mysterious Mall tycoon?"Lara made a bitter face. Was that her friend's only concern? If Miguel wa
Lara remained silent while she and Miguel ate. She had no appetite, even though she was actually hungry. She was frustrated with the outcome of her long-awaited dream of seeing him again. She had expected to encounter the gentle Migo who was once deeply in love with her sister back then. Why, after sixteen years, had not only his appearance changed? The kind and sweet Miguel Villareal she once knew had been replaced by this intimidating and overbearing version."Why didn't you come to work?" he asked, wiping his lips. He was already done eating, while she just pushed her food around her plate."For what? You humiliated me, remember? What face do I have left to show there?" She rolled her eyes at him."You are twenty-three, Lara. You're not a child anymore. Can't you handle such a small matter?" His tone held a hint of irritation."How about you? Must you confront me that way? You could've called me to your office and settled your issues with me privately!" she retorted, growing increa
"Lara!" Kylene greeted her happily when she saw her. "I thought you were fired too! I'm glad it's just a suspension for you!"She furrowed her brow. Suspension? Was she supposed to be suspended? Was that what Migo had informed the office about her absence?Nevertheless, she didn't try to correct Kylene. She couldn't tell her that she just didn't feel like going to work yesterday."Who got fired?" she asked instead."Lizzie. Also Kendra," Kylene replied. "One-third of our department got suspended yesterday."Lara thought about it. How did Migo find out about what happened to her there when she only mentioned it to him last night? And it was merely because she was annoyed. But he had fired them in the morning when she hadn't said a word to him yet.Was what he said true? That he cared about what was happening to her there because she was his wife?'He should, Lara. He's the one who put you in this situation. He should be responsible,' her reasonable mind said."Finally, no one will both
Miguel didn't come home that night. But it wasn't like he was supposed to anyway. After all, he hadn't been home in sixteen years, had he? Should she really be surprised that he didn't show up for just one night?Lara tossed and turned in her bed until morning came and she realized she hadn't slept at all. What was wrong with her?She got up groggily and took a shower."Miss Lara, are you feeling unwell?" Auntie Rosette asked as she served her breakfast. She even pressed the back of her hand against Lara's forehead."No, I'm fine," she mumbled. "Did Migo come home, Auntie?""No," Auntie Rosette replied, giving her a curious look. "He didn't say he was coming home. He's probably at his condo.""Where is his condo, Auntie?" she asked, reaching for her food, knowing full well that Auntie Rosette wouldn't reveal Migo's address."Is there something bothering you, Miss Lara?" Auntie Rosette inquired instead."Nothing," she replied before sighing. What was her problem, anyway? Yesterday, she
Lara was supposed to call Uncle George to pick her up. But at midnight, she found herself sitting next to Chester, crying her heart out.She was to be with Tasya, but her friend was out of the country. So, here she was, with Chester, who was patiently waiting for her to finish crying. He was waiting, even knowing full well that no matter what questions he asked, she wouldn't reveal the reason for her tears."I feel weird watching you cry," he said, his patience running thin as he handed her one tissue after another. "It's the first time I've seen you cry, and I'm dying to know who the fvck made you like this! This isn't you, Lara!"She felt weird crying in front of him too. But what could she do? It seemed like her eyes had turned into endless wells of tears.Heaven knew she wanted to tell Chester why she was crying. But she couldn't bring herself to do it. She knew him well; they'd been close friends for many years. She trusted that he wouldn't mock her or judge her. However, for som
