Chapter 12

Rachel’s POV

After J left—sparing me just a single glance with no remorse on his face—I sighed and walked back into his room. I reminded myself I only had to endure this for three months.

But how could someone be so heartless and ungrateful?

I pushed the thought aside and walked into his bathroom to brush my teeth and take a bath. I was instantly greeted by the scent of his body wash—soft and mild.

I finished getting ready in under thirty minutes and headed to the living room.

“Ellien, you’re up?” Mr. Frank greeted me with a smile as I walked in.

Am I even allowed to sleep in as long as I want here?

Back home, even though I wasn’t allowed to touch anything because they believed my bad luck would contaminate the house, I still had to be up before seven or Ellien would wake me with her loud yelling, reminding me how useless I was.

“Yes. Good morning, Mr. Frank,” I smiled politely.

But my smile faded the moment I remembered the phone call of his that I had overheard. Still, I

Chapter 17My hands trembled as I stared up at J. His words still echoed in my ears like a cruel sentence.I must have been dreaming to ever hope that J would help me.“Fire her if she can’t do her work properly,” J said, getting to his feet. He didn’t spare me a second glance before walking away.Mrs. Anny immediately rushed after him. “But the meeting has just started, sir!”J didn’t respond. He left completely.“You!” she shrieked, turning to me. “You ruined this! You just ruined my chance of getting promoted, and I won’t hesitate to fire you too!”“I’m sorry, Mrs. Anny, but the CEO just said that out of anger. You can’t fire her,” a voice suddenly interrupted. It was the same man I’d met in J’s office the other day—his assistant, Liam.“Mr. Liam,” Mrs. Anny’s voice immediately softened as she turned to him. “But you heard when he—”“That’s why I said it was just out of anger. As for the meeting, it will be rescheduled, so your promotion won’t be affected.”Mrs. Anny nodded. “I und

Chapter 16I took off my low heels and crashed tiredly on my bed. Working at a company wasn’t what I had imagined—it was the complete opposite. Maybe it was because I was dumb and knew nothing, too.In just my first week, I had managed to get lost on my way back home from work. Another time, I got robbed of the little cash I had and had to walk home for hours. My life had clearly gotten more miserable ever since I started working. It was obvious I was hated by my supervisor—and my teammates weren’t left out either. As an intern, I wasn’t allowed to do any proper work. All I did was run errands like their personal maid. I’d been in charge of coffee runs, lunch orders, and random deliveries from the moment I arrived. On my first day, as soon as the manager left, my supervisor ordered me to make her coffee. I spent two hours trying to get it right before she finally approved it. To make matters worse, she then made me do the same for everyone else in the office. Technically, all I did on

Chapter 15Rachel’s POVIt was my first day at work. I sat in front of my mirror, carefully concealing my white brow with dye. Then I stood up and spun in front of the mirror, a happy feeling surging through me. It was my first day of being free—my first day of living like a human—so I didn’t expect anything less. When J announced I could start working in his office, I didn’t believe him. Not until the housekeeper came to my room the next day, informing me that J had asked her to drop off my employment contract and other legal documents. I was more than happy. Even though it was just an intern job as an interior design associate, I was still overjoyed. My eyes even widened at the salary grade. I’d be earning my own income. I’d heard J’s company was one of a kind, and the salary grade was one of the main reasons everyone wanted to work there—but they always chose the best.I walked out of my room, and the moment I arrived at the dining hall, I saw Mr. Frank welcoming me with a smile as

Chapter 14 J’s POVI was shocked when my grandfather suggested that Rachel work as my personal assistant. The last thing I wanted was for her to be close to me.“That can’t be possible, Grandfather.”“Why?” he asked, raising a brow. “I think it’s a good way for you both to get to know each other better. You can also teach her how the business is run.”“No, Grandfather,” I refused again. “I never told you I was interested in getting close to her, and I’m not interested in teaching anyone. You can get her a tutor if that’s what you want.”“But she’s your wife,” Grandfather added, clearly disgusting me all over again. I just wished he’d stop calling her that. Those formalities... they’re only on paper.“This won’t work. And I have my preferences when it comes to my assistant. I mean, she clearly has no work experience.”“Liam didn’t either when he started, and he turned out to be a great help to you. I think she’s fit for the job. She’ll be able to take care of you.”“I can take care of

Chapter 13Rachel’s POVI went to J’s company for two days, and one thing I was sure of was that I wanted to cure J quickly and leave his life. I wanted to start living my desired life with Jacob, not someone who treated me like I wasn’t human, like I was a monster, just like my father. I sat in my room. After a lot of J’s nagging with his grandfather, Mr Frank finally approved that I move back to my former room, near the garden I sat on the sofa, looking at the stray dog I picked up near J’s company. Trying to cure J, I was struggling with my powers. I was trying to study it. I never felt the need because it never felt necessary or important to me, but now it does. I could easily see the stray cat’s desire, it was to be fed with a lot of good food because it was starved, but its owner.I sighed and picked up the can of cat food that Jeffery bought earlier for the cat and poured it into its bowl to eat. I was a little disappointed since I didn’t need any power to cure the cat; it w

Chapter 11 J’s POV The sun’s rays that ran across my face immediately dragged me from sleep. With my eyes still closed, I grunted and rolled to the other side of the bed. I was daydreaming about my early days with Mira—how peaceful everything was, without chaos, without my grandfather’s nagging, and without all the arranged marriages. We were free. Totally free, like birds in the sky. Suddenly, my foot brushed against another pair of legs on the bed. My eyes flew open, and I stared up at the ceiling. I clearly remembered leaving Mira’s apartment after our fight—after she asked me to leave in tears. Did... did she follow me home? I immediately turned to the figure beside me. Her face was covered with the sheet, and all I could see were her neat, white legs. In a hurry, I moved closer, leaning toward her and whispering, “I’m sorry, I...” I gently pulled the sheet off her face, expecting to see Mira. But I froze. It wasn’t Mira. It was Rachel. A deep frown etched across my f

Chapter 10Rachel’s POVI blinked, my mind still focused on Jeffery’s words. I couldn’t really understand what he meant, but I didn’t ask further. I had the urge to stare into his head and use my power to discover his true desire in that moment, but I held back. What if I ended up seeing something unexpected—like with J?Jeffery suddenly got a call and stepped away to answer it. Since it was taking longer than I expected—and it was already late—I decided to return to the room. I was exhausted. All I wanted was to lie down and have a good night’s sleep.Since I had no personal room at the moment, I ended up in J’s room again. I sighed, worried about the fuss he’d make if he came back and found me there. But I was too sleepy to care. I didn’t even bother changing into my pajamas, I simply turned off the light and lay on his bed.Suddenly, the door burst open and someone staggered in. Knowing it could only be J, I jumped out of the bed, trembling a little in fear.Since he had stormed ou

Chapter 9Rachel’s POVI never imagined I could talk back to J like that. My mind raced so fast it felt like it would burst out of my chest as I walked away from him. I could hear him growl in anger, but I didn’t turn back. I knew if I turned back, I could break down in front of him.He was the one doing me a favor, not the other way around. He was trying to help me escape from my world—from my father. Even if his family found out I wasn’t Ellien, I could literally drop dead. Curing him was just a way of showing my appreciation.I sighed deeply. But showing appreciation doesn’t mean J could treat me however he wants. Just because I’m hated by my father doesn’t mean I should be treated like trash by him.Suddenly, I heard footsteps approaching. Mr. Frank and Jeffery walked out of a room.“I’ll try to talk to the lawyer about it,” Jeffery said, and Mr. Frank nodded firmly.“So what about J? Have you seen him?” Mr. Frank asked, his eyes scanning around.“Well…” Jeffery cleared his throat
