Chapter 28

Rachel’s POV

The morning sun poured through the massive windows of my room, but instead of warmth, all I felt was a deep, growing sadness and frustration. The glowing sun did nothing to calm the storm inside my heart.

I curled up on my bed, tears flowing freely from my eyes. My eyes were red and puffy from the intense, nonstop crying. I couldn’t stop crying after everything that happened—after the final verdict Mr. Frank gave me.

Another tear streamed down my cheek as J’s words rang back in my head. He was right; Father would never let me go.

Today was the day I was going to face him. The same man who had hated me from birth. Even though I knew it was almost impossible, I was ready to do anything—cry, scream, threaten him if I had to.

I slid out of bed and dragged myself to the bathroom, where I had a quick bath. I couldn’t even bathe properly—all I could think about was how I was going to face my father, how I was going to be free.

It wasn’t the first time I had tried to

Chapter 72Rachel’s POVI sat alone in the living room, and the smell of grilled chicken swarmed into my nostrils. Sarah was making meals.A few minutes later, she came out fully dressed with Mr. Frank.“Rachel, darling, are you sure you aren’t coming with us?” Sarah asked, worry clearly written across her face.I flashed a smile at her. “I’ll be fine. You’re not even sleeping over there.”I didn’t want to go because—what? I was sure it would be a whole lot of drama.Mr. Frank was officially meeting Sarah’s family. It made me wonder slightly what her children looked like.“I made you food. You should eat once you get hungry,” she added, and I nodded.Mr. Frank waved at me, and I smiled brightly back since I couldn’t wave because of the cast on my broken hand.It had been a few days since I was discharged from the hospital, and honestly, my life felt different—making me constantly reconsider my choices, especially where someone like Mira was concerned. She was never worth it.My right

Chapter 71J’s POVI didn’t know why or how I did it, but I did it. I stupidly carried Mira in bridal style in front of everyone, including Rachel.I paced around my office, dialing Mira’s number probably for the hundredth time. I couldn’t reach her; it was as if she had blocked my number.I ran my fingers through my hair frustratedly. I shouldn’t have done that. But I just felt guilty. I was trying to show Rachel that I cared. I didn’t want her to feel unwanted anymore because I felt that was the reason she must have thought of suicide.I sighed and crumpled into my chair, exhausted.I decided to return to work and check up on Mira at home later. I pressed the intercom to place a call to Rachel’s office.“Send in my coffee,” I stated but froze for a minute — I forgot she was still at the hospital, not yet discharged.I sighed and called my receptionist instead, asking for coffee. The day felt so long and boring. I couldn’t understand why, but maybe it was because Rachel wasn’t around

Chapter 70 Rachel’s POV My eyes slowly fluttered open as the sound of beeping filled my ears, pulling me out of the darkness. I blinked against the bright lights. My whole body ached, and the smell of antiseptic swarmed my nostrils, pulling me back to my senses. It didn’t take long before I realized where I was. My memories started coming back — how I had pushed Mira away and got hit. Is she okay? That was all I could think of at the moment. “Ellen, are you okay?” I immediately heard a voice over me. It was a feminine voice that sounded familiar, and I immediately guessed who it was — Mira. My eyes widened and scanned her, and I was instantly relieved that she was okay. “I’m glad you’re fine,” she sighed and turned to someone. My gaze followed her direction, and that was when I noticed J. Is he here? Of course, Mira was at the hospital — he must have come rushing. “I’ll get the doctor,” Mira said and walked out. I stiffened a little; I could clearly see her rolling her eyes

Chapter 69J’s POVThe fluorescent light hummed quietly above me as I stepped out of the elevator, heading back to my office. It was already past business hours, but I was still at work, sorting a few things out.The moment I arrived at reception, my receptionist—who had a frown across her face—immediately straightened up, forcing a smile. I had personally asked her to wait behind after closing hours while I worked.I was about to return to my office when I halted and turned to her. “Where’s Ellen?”“She left earlier,” she replied. “I overheard her talking about a date. I think that’s why she left.”“A date?!” Liam freaked out in my ear.For a minute, I had forgotten I was still on a call with Liam and hadn’t ended it.“Alright. You can clock out now,” I said to her and walked into my office, then sat down.“You’re really not bothered about your wife going on a date?” Liam asked, sounding curious.“Of course not,” I mumbled.“So what if someone actually asks her out? You’re still okay

Chapter 68Rachel’s POVThe restaurant was quiet. People ate calmly, the only sounds were the faint music humming in the background and the soft clinking of silverware. It felt safe... it felt normal. Jacob had asked us to meet outside, which I wasn’t against. It was better than meeting shamelessly in front of the Charltons' mansion. Ever since he told me, I’d been looking forward to it. I’d hoped to see him more frequently, to spend more time with my love, Jacob. That way, I knew my feelings would gradually regenerate, and I would forget J.I glanced at my wristwatch. It was almost seven and Jacob hadn’t shown up. A frown immediately etched itself on my forehead.I heard the restaurant door open. I looked back, hoping it was Jacob, but my face dropped in disappointment—it was someone else. But just as I turned back, disappointed, the door opened again. Before I could fully turn, I heard loud footsteps behind me, followed by a familiar voice.“Have you been waiting long? I’m so sorry—

Chapter 67Rachel’s POVWe sat quietly around the table, eating in silence. The last time we had a normal family breakfast—especially on a weekend where everyone ate without talking about business—was probably before I got married to J. Honestly, I had never witnessed it.I raised my eyes slightly, and my gaze met J’s. I looked away immediately. I had been feeling humiliated ever since I burst into tears right in front of him last night—without even giving an explanation.Mr. Frank suddenly cleared his throat, and everyone turned to him.“You should all get prepared. Our wedding is in a few days,” he reminded us.We all nodded without saying a word.Sarah turned to me shortly after. “Ellen, you're coming with me later to pick up my wedding dress at the store.”“Alright, Sarah,” I mumbled.Breakfast ended, and I returned to my room since it was the weekend. I was lying on the bed when a message suddenly came in from Jacob:“Good morning, love. I hope you had a splendid night. Don’t for
