The guest room was at the end of the hall.

Shannon paused at the doorway, her fingers resting lightly against the frame before she stepped in.

It used to be a storage room now it was neat, cleaned and prepared.

A bed, fresh sheets and a wardrobe that looked barely used.

Shannon exhaled slowly and stepped inside, closing the door behind her.

For a moment, she just stood there.

The house was quiet. Once, it had been filled with soft music, the hum of late night work, Rowan’s voice drifting from one room to another as he called her name.

Now silence.

Shannon walked to the bed and sat down slowly.

Her body was still recovering, but it wasn’t her body that felt heavy. It was everything else.

Three months.

Three months of her life gone. And in those three months everything had changed.

Her gaze drifted toward the wardrobe. She stood and opened it, then she froze.

Her clothes.

Folded.

Organized.

Hanging neatly like they had always belonged there.

Shannon’s fingers trembled slightly as she reached out, brushing over one of her dresses.

This wasn’t the maid’s doing.

There was only one person who would have made sure everything was arranged this way.

Her chest tightened.

Shannon closed the wardrobe slowly.

Three months.

She repeated it again in her mind.

...............................

Dinner was at eight.

She made it at exactly eight, not a minute early, not a second late.

The dining room looked the same.

Long table, polished surface. Everything in its place, everything except them.

Rowan was already seated, Evelyn beside him.

Shannon’s steps slowed for just a second before she composed herself and walked in.

Rowan glanced up briefly. “Sit,”

Shannon nodded and took her seat across from him.

The space between them felt wide, like even distance had rules now.

A maid began serving the dishes.

Shannon’s eyes flickered toward Rowan instinctively, old habit.

She noticed the way he reached for the water before touching his food.

The slight pause before he started eating.

He hadn’t changed. Not in the little things and that hurt more than anything else. Because it meant his body remembered even if his heart didn’t.

Shannon picked up her utensils. “Your meeting with the textile partners is tomorrow morning,” she said gently.

Rowan paused and looked up at her slightly surprised. “How do you know that?”

“I used to manage your schedule, so I reached out to the new secretary.” she replied calmly.

A small silence followed.

“You’ve worked with them before?”

She nodded. “Several times."

Another pause then.. “I designed the spring collection that secured that partnership,” she added quietly.

Rowan’s brows pulled together slightly. “That collection made the company a significant profit,”

Shannon gave a small nod. “Yes.”

“I didn’t know that was you,” Rowan said.

Shannon lowered her gaze briefly. “There’s a lot you don’t know right now.”

Rowan leaned back slightly, watching her. As if trying to place her somewhere in a puzzle he couldn’t fully see. “You’ll come with me tomorrow.”

Shannon looked up. For a second, she thought she misheard him. “…Tomorrow?” she asked softly.

“To the office,” Rowan clarified, already returning his attention to his plate. “It’ll be my first day back. I don’t like walking into things blind.”

Her fingers tightened slightly around her fork.

“I understand,” she said.

Before anything else could settle Evelyn let out a soft laugh.

“Oh,” she said lightly, tilting her head as she looked at Rowan. “I thought I was going with you tomorrow.”

Her tone was gentle but there was something beneath it.

Rowan didn’t hesitate. “You are.”

Evelyn smiled, satisfied, and reached for the serving spoon beside her. She carefully placed food into Rowan’s bowl with ease, her movements slow. As if she had done it countless times.

Rowan didn’t stop her instead he picked up another dish and placed some onto her plate in return.

“Eat,” he said almost absentminded but natural. Like it was habit.

Shannon’s hand stilled for just a second.

That used to be her place.

That used to be..

She forced herself to move again, lowering her gaze to her plate.

Evelyn glanced at her then and smiled.

“You’ll be busy tomorrow too,” her voice carrying across the table as she dabbed her lips with a napkin. “Since you’ve been managing his schedule all this time…” She paused. “It shouldn’t be hard to continue as his personal assistant right away right?”

Assistant.

Not wife.

Shannon’s grip tightened slightly beneath the table but when she looked up. “Yes,” she said. “I know what needs to be done.”

Rowan’s gaze flickered toward her again then he nodded once. “Good."

Tomorrow she wouldn’t just be in the house. She would be in his world again even if only as a shadow.

“Son.”

The voice cut through the room sharply.

All three of them turned.

Mrs. Whitmore stood at the entrance of the dining room, a travel bag in her hand, her expression already darkening the moment her eyes landed on Shannon.

“What is she doing here?”

No one answered immediately.

Evelyn straightened slightly.

Rowan didn’t react.

But Mrs. Whitmore didn’t wait. Her heels struck the floor as she walked in, each step precise until she reached the table. Then she moved fast.

Her hand shot forward, gripping Shannon’s arm before she could react.

The chair scraped violently against the floor.

“Get up,” she snapped.

Shannon’s body jerked slightly from the sudden force, her fingers instinctively gripping the edge of the table.

“I said get up!”

Mrs. Whitmore didn’t wait this time.

She yanked harder, dragging Shannon halfway out of her seat.

Pain shot up Shannon’s arm.

“Stop...” she gasped, trying to steady herself.

“Have you lost all sense of shame?” Mrs. Whitmore hissed. “You still dare to sit here? Eat at this table like you belong here?”

Evelyn stood quickly. “Auntie, maybe..”

But she didn’t finish.

Because Rowan had already stood. “Enough.”

The word wasn’t loud but it cut through the room like a blade.

Mrs. Whitmore froze so did Shannon.

Slowly Rowan stepped forward. His gaze landed on his mother’s hand gripping Shannon’s arm then lifted. “Let her go.”

For a second no one moved.

Mrs. Whitmore blinked, as if she hadn’t heard him correctly. “…What?”

“I said,” Rowan repeated, his tone even sharper this time, “let her go.”

Aria stormed toward them with both hands planted dramatically on her hips. She looked between the two of them before pointing an accusing finger. "I leave the house for two days and you both disappear!"Sean calmly handed his jacket to one of the staff. "We didn't disappear.""You absolutely disappeared!"Aria walked straight up to Shannon before dramatically grabbing both her shoulders. "You abandoned me."Shannon laughed. "We did not.""You did!" She turned toward Sean. "And you!"Sean raised a brow. "What?""You are the worst brother on this planet."Sean looked completely unbothered. "I've been called worse."Aria gasped dramatically. "You planned this."Sean looked at her blankly. She pointed between Sean and Shannon. "You insisted I stay a few days with Mom and Dad. You said..." she deepened her voice in a poor imitation of him, "'Spend more time with them.'"Shannon immediately burst into laughter.Aria pointed triumphantly. "See, you only wanted an alone time with Shannon."Se

Kennedy's fingers stopped. After several long seconds, he slowly lowered his hand. "No."The single word was almost a whisper.Sean would live, not because Kennedy's hatred had faded but because his daughter had asked him for time. He would honor that for now.Kennedy opened his eyes again. The flames reflected in them, brighter than ever. His estate was gone, his men had fallen, his home had become smoke and as he stared across the burning grounds, the grief that had lived inside him for twenty seven years twisted into something even darker. He turned away from the window. "Prepare a new base."His men immediately straightened."We've lost a house." His voice was calm again. "But we haven't lost the war."Without another glance back, Kennedy walked deeper into the building. Behind him, black smoke continued rising into the afternoon sky, a silent monument to a rivalry that had just crossed a line from which neither man could ever truly return.Meanwhile, Sean stood outside the burnin

Kennedy walked toward the wall of monitors built into the study. Dozens of security feeds lit up the screens. The front gates, the gardens, the eastern wall, the garages, the rooftops, every angle, every entrance, every exit.He watched black clad men move with terrifying precision through the estate. No hesitation, no confusion. They weren't wandering. They knew exactly where they were going.Kennedy's eyes narrowed. "They planned this."One of his men swallowed nervously. "There are too many of them."Kennedy remained silent. His gaze continued moving from one screen to another. The western wall had already fallen, the eastern checkpoint had gone quiet, two of his security teams were pinned behind cover. Another camera suddenly filled with static, then another, then another."They're taking out the surveillance."Kennedy quietly rested both hands on the desk. His face remained calm, far calmer than everyone else's but inside he already knew. They were outnumbered. Not by a little, b

The moment the line disconnected, the warmth that had briefly returned to Sean's face vanished. His expression became unreadable again.Victor immediately looked over. "Boss?"Sean tucked the phone into his pocket before looking at the live tracker on the tablet. "She's headed for the airport."Victor nodded. One of the men frowned slightly. "So... we proceed with the original plan?"Sean didn't answer immediately instead, he watched Shannon's location continue moving farther and farther away from the Miles estate.Only when he was certain she was safely outside reach did he finally speak. "Get everyone into position."Immediately the atmosphere inside the vehicle changed. Every man straightened, weapons were checked, communication earpieces went in and final instructions began passing through the convoy.Sean turned toward Victor. "You'll take half the men to the eastern wall."Victor nodded once. "The remaining team?""With me."A dangerous smile appeared on one of the men's faces.

Morning arrived far more peacefully than anyone inside the Miles estate expected. The sun stretched across the gardens, warming the dew covered flowers while birds sang somewhere beyond the trees. Looking at the estate now, nobody would believe it had been carrying decades of hatred within its walls.Meanwhile Shannon had just finished breakfast with Kennedy. Unlike the emotionally exhausting dinner the previous night, breakfast had been surprisingly normal. They talked about coffee, about how terrible the estate cook apparently was at making pancakes according to Kennedy, and about how Shannon had inherited her mother's habit of adding too much sugar. For almost thirty minutes, they weren't strangers, they weren't father and daughter reunited after twenty seven years, they were simply two people trying to figure out what family looked like.Eventually the plates were cleared away.Kennedy reached into the inside pocket of his jacket before placing a sleek black bank card on the table

Sean's voice changed instantly. Gone was the cold edge, gone was the calculated control, now he just sounded terrified. "Shannon, where are you? Are you okay? Are you hurt? Did he touch you? Are you bleeding? Are you alone? Tell me where you are right now."The questions came so fast Shannon barely had time to breathe. Beside her, Kennedy's jaw tightened visibly. He hated hearing Sean's voice in his room, hated hearing the panic in it even more because panic like that sounded real.Shannon held the phone tighter. "Sean, breathe.""No." Sean's voice came back harsher this time, full of stress and fury and relief all at once. "You don't tell me to breathe, Shannon. You've been gone for two days. Two. Days. Tell me where you are.""I'm okay.""You're not okay if you're still there."Shannon winced slightly because yes, the phone was on speaker and yes, her father was hearing all of this. "Sean, I'm fine."On the other end, Sean ran a hand through his hair so roughly it hurt. "Don't trust

The explosion lit up the night sky, for hours afterward videos flooded every social media platform imaginable. The burning wreck, the crowd screaming, the ambulance lights, the photos of Ryxx's destroyed car. Nobody could stop talking about it because Ryxx wasn't just another racer. He was a legend

The car finally stopped upside down, broken and crushed. Smoke curled from the ruined vehicle. For several seconds Shannon couldn't hear anything except the ringing in her ears then reality slowly returned. Her breathing, the smell of fuel, the taste of blood and Sean."Sean!" Her voice broke immed

Meanwhile Evelyn watched the idea take root then finally Rowan nodded slowly. "You think so?"Evelyn almost smiled instead she forced herself to remain serious. "I know so."Another pause then Rowan actually looked grateful. Grateful to Evelyn. "Thank you."Evelyn nearly laughed instead she sighed
