Keegan’s POV

I stood in the long verandah outside my private wing with my arms crossed tight over my chest. The rest of the mansion was all fancy lights and expensive furniture for guests I never invited.

The air had been filtered twice and the windows were shut tight just as I liked it. I hated surprises and made sure everything around me was the way I needed it.

Dr. Sterling stood a few feet away, looking at me in that careful way he always did, like I might break if he said the wrong thing.

He had his white coat on and his stethoscope hanging over his neck. He was in in his sixties and his dark hair was quickly turning gray. “Keegan, let’s try the new protocol today. We'll make use of your wrist with just two seconds of contact and we believe the meds we gave you an hour ago should keep the reaction smaller this time.”

I didn’t answer right away.

My black leather gloves felt like an armor to me and I hated taking them off. Hated even thinking about it. “You said the same shit last time,” I muttered. “I couldn’t sleep for three nights. My skin looked like raw meat.”

“I remember,” he said quietly. “But your numbers are getting worse, not better. You can’t stay locked away forever. One day something will happen that we can’t control.”

I let out a slow breath as I clenched my jaw tight. A part of me wanted to tell him to leave, to go back to his fancy clinic and leave me alone, but another part, the part that was tired knew that he was right.

I was twenty-nine years old and yet I lived like a damn prisoner in my own house.

“Fine,” I said. “Two seconds and that’s it.”

I pulled up the sleeve of my black shirt and held out my arm and my heart was already pounding hard.

Dr. Sterling stepped closer and I could smell the hospital smell on him ; antiseptic and rubber. He reached out slowly, like he was approaching a wild animal and then his fingers touched my bare wrist.

For half a second, nothing happened.

Then the burn hit.

It started under his fingers and shot up my arm like someone poured boiling water on me. I yanked my arm back fast, but it was too late. The itch came right after the burn an it was spreading fast, red patches popped up on my skin, rising into thick welts, making my wrist look like it was on fire.

“Fuck…” I growled through my teeth.

I ripped my glove off with my teeth and stared at my arm and saw that the rash was moving and spreading up toward my elbow. My throat started closing up, like invisible hands were squeezing it and each breath got harder.

My chest felt heavy, like someone was sitting on it.

I slid down the cold wall until my ass hit the floor. My back pressed against the wall as sweat rolled down my face even though the room was cool. The welts were getting bigger and angrier.

Some of them were even starting to blister. Fuck.

Dr. Sterling was already on the phone and in a sharp voice he says, “I need the epinephrine kit in the verandah. Now. He’s reacting fast.”

I closed my eyes tight and tried to breathe through it.

Fifteen years. Fifteen fucking years since that night and there were no changes.

Doctors called it severe psychosomatic contact reaction mixed with trauma. Fancy words for “your skin tries to kill you if someone touches you.”

Anytime someone touched me, my skin broke out in hives and it swelled. Sometimes I couldn’t breathe, so I built walls, the literal ones and the invisible ones.

I wore gloves every day, I had private doctors and I sanitized everything.

There were no handshakes, no hugs, no kisses, nothing.

The shot finally came as one of the nurses from my medical team ran up and jabbed it into my leg. The medicine hit fast and cold rush through my veins. The worst of the burning started to fade and the welts faded, my throat loosened a little and I could breathe again, but it still hurt.

Dr. Sterling crouched a safe distance away. “I’m sorry, Keegan. We’ll adjust the dosage again.”

I didn’t look at him, I just stared at my arm, at the mess my own body made and the anger sat heavy in my stomach.

I was angry at everything, angry at the crash, angry at my stupid immune system and angry at the whole damn world that got to touch and laugh and live while I rotted in this clean, empty house.

I leaned my head back against the wall and laughed once. It was a short, bitter sound that turned into a cough.

Never again, I told myself. I won’t let anyone close enough to break me.

But even as I thought it, a darker, quieter thought slipped in. The same one that kept me up at night.

What if there’s one person out there whose touch doesn’t do this?

One person who could put her hand on my skin and my body wouldn’t fight back. One person I could actually feel without paying for it later.

It was a stupid, dangerous fantasy.

I wiped the sweat off my face with my clean hand and stared at the empty hallway.

God help her if she ever walks into my life.

Because if she does… I don’t know if I’ll push her away or hold on so tight she can’t escape.

Keegan's POVYesterday’s elevator disaster kept replaying in my head like a bad song.I had been trying to get to my car without dealing with anyone, just a quick ride down in my private elevator. Then this woman marched in like she owned the damn thing. For one single, stupid second, I was stunned. She was striking with a unique eye color, confident posture and the kind of presence that demanded attention whether you wanted to give it or not.She didn’t even hesitate, she just slammed her leg in the door, stepped inside, and started talking. My brain actually short-circuited. Then reality slammed back in. I couldn’t be close to anyone so I shouted at her to get out. Most people would have bolted, but she didn’t. She called me crazy to my face and even had the nerve to say I was handsome.Too bad you’re crazy, because you’re actually handsome. The nerve.I shook the memory away as I sat at my desk on the raised platform. I had already taken my extra antihistamines and put on fresh glo

Nara's POVI woke up at 6:15 AM even though my alarm was set for 6:30. My brain wouldn’t let me sleep as today was day one of the new job, and after yesterday’s disasters, I refused to mess this up.I took a quick shower, dried my dark hair, and stood in front of my closet for way too long. I finally picked a crisp white blouse with a fitted black pencil skirt that reached just below my knees, and my only decent pair of black heels.I kept my makeup natural nothing too much. I wanted to look professional, not like I was trying too hard. After tying my hair into a clean bun, I stared at myself in the mirror, my light amber eyes staring right back at me.“You need this job, Nara. Keep your mouth under control.” I told my reflection.I grabbed my bag and headed to the kitchen, hoping for something quick to eat. The moment I opened the fridge, I already knew it was empty. Just a few sad condiments and an almost finished carton of milk.Jake walked in right then, scratching his stomach und

Nara's POVI walked out of the conference room with the job offer in my hand and my head spinning. The woman had introduced herself as Linda and the guy, John. “You start tomorrow at eight,” Linda said. “Mr. Blackwood will actually be in the office for a short while, so you’ll get to meet him then.”I blinked. “Wait… that’s it? No second interview?”John shrugged with an embarrassed smile. “We're desperate. The last assistant lasted nine days, but you seem tough enough. Sign the papers and you’re in.”I nodded, still trying to process everything. I signed everything they put in front of me. The salary made my eyes go wide as it was more than what I expected, plus health insurance and a monthly transport allowance if I needed itSweet.I spent the next hour in onboarding and for the first time since Jake dropped his bomb this morning, I felt like I could breathe. But then came the weird part.“So… when do I meet Mr. Blackwood?” I asked.Linda glanced at her colleague before answering.

Nara's POVI was already running late when Jake started talking.I stood in the middle of our tiny living room with one heel on and the other in my hand as I tried to fix the strap. My black pencil skirt was a little tight, but it was the best interview outfit I had. Today had to go right because I needed this job like I needed air.Jake sat on the couch with his hands between his knees, not looking at me. “Nara. We need to talk.”I frowned because I hated that tone. “Can it wait? I have the interview in forty minutes.”He shook his head. “No, it can’t.”I straightened up and stared at him. “Then say it fast.”Jake rubbed the back of his neck, the way he always did when he was nervous. “I’ve been seeing someone else for a couple months now. It’s… serious. So I think we should break up.”The words hit me like cold water. I blinked once, then twice. “You’re joking.”“I’m not.” He finally looked up. “Look, you’re too much, Nara. You’re always reading these big books, correcting people, t

  • The Billionaire's Only Exception   Prologue

PrologueThe night breeze felt cold against my damp skin, sending goosebumps across my arms and shoulders as I stood frozen at the edge of the pool. My black top and short shorts was dripping wet and was clinging to every curve of my body and water dripped from my hair down my back. The towel I held felt suddenly useless in my hand.Keegan Blackwood stood only a few feet away from me looking different under the moonlight. He looked less like the cold, untouchable billionaire I worked for and more like a man.He was wearing black trousers and a fitted dark t-shirt that stretched across his broad chest and muscular arms and his striking blue eyes were locked onto me with an intensity that made my stomach twist. The air between us felt thick, heavy and charged with something I couldn’t name.“You’re doing it again,” I whispered, my voice softer than I wanted it to be.Mr Blackwood took one slow step closer. “Doing what?”“Looking at me like that,” I breathed. “Like you’re trying to figur
