Chapter 20

“How can I get pregnant?”

Jaxson choked in shock and coughed incessantly after hearing what I said.

“I mean, how did they get to the conclusion that I was pregnant?” I tried to clarify myself as it seems that he didn't appear to expect that question. “I don't think my stomach is huge enough to fool you into thinking I'm pregnant, is it?”

It just seemed like what had happened previously flashed back to me, and everything that is happening now gradually made sense to me.

“Wait…” I grumbled.

“What is it?” Jaxson asked aloud as he instantly jolted from his seat. “What? Did you remember something? Are you really pregnant-”

“No!” I snapped, interrupting him. “I'm not pregnant, Jaxson. Okay? How can I be pregnant with just a-” I came to a halt, unsure what to say because I don't want to remind him of our kiss.

“Then what are you trying to get out of your mind?” He replied, with a frown on his face as his chest moved upwards waiting for my response.

“Did they speculate that I'm pregnant after I was on the verge of vomiting in the meeting?” I asked, and noticed Jaxson contemplating for a while before nodding at me. “I knew it!” My voice reverberated across the room as I exclaimed. “It was right after you introduced me to them as your wife that I felt my stomach tightening and my gut whirling. Perhaps what they assumed was we should get married as soon as possible because we are expecting a child.”

Jaxson just gave me a scowl. “How can things be so messed up…” he pondered quietly.

“Then, in the restroom, two employees noticed me stroking my stomach, which may also have sparked their pregnancy speculations!” I yelled in panic. “That's what the two of them are talking about that is now scattered among the people in your company. And that's certainly the reason why, as I walk to your office, every single person's eye is fixed on me."

We lost in the depths of our thoughts as silence suddenly engulfed us.

That explains why their stares at me are so extreme.

I'm afraid what's on their minds right now is that I was the one who caused Daniella and Jaxson to split up. That their marriage could not continue just because Jaxson had accidentally got me pregnant. That's why he decided to marry me so quickly.

“Oh my god…” I grumbled. “How could things have turned out this way?”

Perhaps Jaxson is already a vile person and a cheater in their eyes. Daniella will then be the victim and receive all of the sympathy.

“I just want to make it obvious that it wasn't my fault that I felt sick earlier.” I defended myself before giving Gunther another scowl. “It was your fault. If you hadn't pushed me to eat so many leaves, I wouldn't have felt sick in front of those people. So if there's anyone to blame here, it's you.” I pointed fiercely at Gunther and then slowly slid my index finger toward Jaxson's seat. “And, you.”

"What are you talking about?” Jaxson murmured, astonished, as I returned the grimace in my face.

“Hello? Do you really need to ask? Aren't you the one who told this man to bring me a bunch of plants and fruits instead of plain water?” I replied, furious, because every time I remember how horrible those leaves taste, a wave of irritation washes over me. “Gunther, on the other hand, even though he knew I couldn't handle it any longer, he nevertheless forced me.”

“Could you perhaps also explain to Mr. Madrigal, why you were so determined to finish the food?” Gunther fired back instantly.

I was going to say anything when Jaxson barged in.

“What the hell is going on here?” He clamored. “I don't recall asking you to bring her some leafy greens for lunch. Didn't I tell you to go ask her what she'd like for lunch and then get it for her?”

As I became more agitated, my nose swelled, and my eyes grew slightly bigger.

“You mean you made the decision on your own?” I retorted, glaring at Gunther.

He chose to remain silent and did not respond, which infuriated me even more.

He, not Jaxson, was the one who tried to turn me into a goat by stuffing those leaves into my mouth.

“But, why did you say it was entirely Jaxson's idea?” I yelled loudly to him. “I knew the amount of food was excessive, that I was on the brink of bursting. And also, you said it was because Jaxson told you that I should eat healthy. I just can’t understand why you lied to me?”

I caught a glimpse of Jaxson's tactful stares as they darted between me and Gunther.

His eyes twitched as his stare became more deeply centered on me.

“Gun?” He called in with a tone of voice I hadn't heard before. “Go outside,” he said, which confused me.

I scowled at Jaxson. I couldn't tell what he was thinking or why he abruptly kicked Gunther out of the room.

As Gunther walks out the door, I get the feeling Jaxson's piercing looks haven't let go of me.

“I will clarify things to the people of Ruegold after it cools down. But for the time being, let us refrain from speaking and let them think as they please.” Jaxson stated coldly, with his eyes devoid of emotion.

“But what if you turn out to be a bad person in the eyes of the public? Jax, you're not to blame for them. They are the ones who did something wrong to you.” I forbade him.

I'm not sure if being silent and not speaking was the best move he could have made because it could have worsened the situation.

“Things are fired up at the moment, so let the issue burn with it. Besides, it can help us in some ways.”

I didn't quite understand what he said so I just kept quiet.

“With the people thinking we are expecting a child just as Lance and his fiance, even without confirming it, we are already one step forward.”

“But... doesn't it seem like you're just making things worse?” I asked, my voice concerned. “What if it backfires and they start looking for your successor or a baby bump months later? Jax, I can’t do anything further for you.”

“Having a child with you will never happen. Don’t worry. I’ll never ask you for that. ”
