Damon finally tore his attention away from the oven door and lowered himself slightly to Isa’s height, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder.

“Go tell Grandma I’m back”

Isa nodded so hard her hair smacked the back of her neck. She darted out of the kitchen immediately, brushing past Suzy’s hip without even sparing her a glance. Her small feet slapped against the polished floor as she disappeared down the hallway.

The second Isa was out of sight, Damon’s posture shifted—shoulders dropping, head straightening, breathing hitching slightly like he’d been holding something down while she was in the room. And then, with a smooth practiced movement, he stepped toward Lena and pressed a kiss to her cheek. Lena felt her body freeze at the touch. The gesture felt wrong—public, performative, a message meant for Suzy rather than her. But still, some instinct made her stand still, letting it happen even as something inside her tightened sharply.

And who was she, she wondered bitterly, to even fli

The evening had settled softly over the Hale family mansion after the elaborate dinner. The garden lights flickered on one by one, illuminating the gazebo in a warm amber glow. Lena sat there alone, her back straight but her shoulders slack, hands folded loosely in her lap as she stared straight ahead. She hadn’t meant to look. But it was impossible not to when the two people she least wanted to see right now were strolling just beyond the hedges, laughter drifting through the air like an insult. Damon’s laugh — low, familiar — mixed too easily with Suzy’s syrupy giggle. Lena watched from afar as Suzy’s hand slipped into his like it's always belonged there. If anything, he leaned into her slightly, head dipping closer as she said something that made him smile again. Lena felt something twist beneath her ribs as she continued to stare at them. She’d been staring so long she didn’t notice the chair beside her shift until it creaked softly under someone else’s weight.“Birdwatching, are

AMARA — BEFOREThe walls of the hotel room always smelled faintly of bergamot and cedar—his cologne soaked into the curtains, the pillows, the very air. This place was ours. Our hiding place. Our escape.Away from my father.Away from the rest of the world.Away from Damon Hale, whose name I hadn’t spoken aloud yet but now hung like smoke between us.But today, nothing felt like escape. Not with the way he stood in front of me, still as a blade, holding the newspaper like it had personally betrayed him.“What’s this supposed to mean?” he asked. His voice was calm. The gray in his eyes darkened as he stared at the photo: Damon and me leaving an event, his hand resting lightly on my back. And still, he looked at it like he wanted to burn a hole through the page.I didn’t answer. His jaw tightened, once, sharply. Then his voice rose—rare for him, but sharp enough to slice the air.“It doesn’t mean anything,” I said quickly, keeping my gaze away from his.My heart thudded in my chest. Not

Finally Damon lifted a hand slightly, as if to politely slice through the conversation between Evelyn and Suzy. His voice carried a tightness he didn’t bother to hide.“I’d have thought the ball would come after the wedding.” His brows pinched together, a frown carving deep between them.Lena’s head turned toward him instantly. “I got some sort of email invite too…” she added quietly.Evelyn brightened.“Yes, my dear.”She leaned forward with her elbows neatly propped on the couch arm, fingers interlaced like she was delivering a lecture she enjoyed. Her pearl bracelet clinked gently as she adjusted her posture.“You must have seen it written on the list I handed both you and Damon,” Evelyn added.Lena nodded even though she had absolutely no memory of the list beyond the couple tandem bicycle riding thingy.“The Governor’s Ball is… well, prestigious doesn’t even begin to cover it. It’s practically a tradition in our family — a place to be seen, to meet familiar faces, to ensure the

Isa was elbow-deep in flour, her small hands pressing shapes into the dough with far more force than necessary as she hummed a little song under her breath. Lena tried to mirror her energy, to match the softness of the moment, but her mind was drifting—pulled backward, tugged by a voice she couldn’t shake.“Put more sprinkles,” Isa ordered, tapping the counter like a tiny general.Lena blinked. “Hmm? Oh—right.”She reached for the jar, but her hand paused mid-air as a memory slid in like a knife under skin.“It’s crazy how similar we are, don’t you think?”Amara had been sitting across from her during one of their sessions—legs crossed, eyes sharpened with that unsettling mix of charm and calculation.“How I can get away with a crime and you could take the fall for it.”She could only laugh nervously as she said that, taking it more as a joke then but now, not so much, judging by all that had happened in the past couple of months and all that she's yet to know about Amara.Lena swallo

Lena, on the other hand, was in a tougher situation than anyone else. After storming out of their shared bedroom earlier, slamming the door behind her, she’d stalked down the hallway, barefoot, muttering under her breath, and chose the room she least expected anyone to be in.Isadora’s room.Because, silly her assumed Isa must have gone to school. And lately she wasn’t able to get a grip on Lucinda either because she was always at the hospital with Kleo, orbiting her like a moon. Sometimes she felt like the odd one out, like the entire household was functioning perfectly fine without her emotional participation. That had been where her dilemma started—the moment she opened Isa’s door.Isadora had whipped her head up from the floor where she’d been coloring, eyes sharp and narrowed with the intensity of someone plotting a coup.Next thing Lena knew, the six-year-old had tackled her onto the bed with surprising strength and pinned her shoulders down with the determination of a tiny inter
