Chapter Twenty-One: The Journal

I read the rest of my mother's journal that night.

I sat in my room. The door was closed. The city lights flickered through the window. I didn't turn on the lamp. I just read by the glow of the skyline.

The entries started three years before she died. Small things at first. A dinner party. A conversation she overheard. A name that didn't sit right.

Then they grew darker.

March 14th — I saw Henry Ashford today. He didn't see me. He was meeting with a man I didn't recognize. They were arguing. I couldn't hear what they were saying. But I saw the envelope. It was thick. It changed hands.

April 2nd — I asked Richard about Henry. He told me not to worry. He told me Henry was a businessman. Nothing more. But I saw his hands shake when he said it.

May 19th — I found the accounts. I found the transfers. I found everything. I have copies. I have names. I have proof.

I turned the page. My hands were steady. My heart was beating normally.

June 3rd — I'm going to the authorities tomorrow. I have everything I need. Richard doesn't know. I can't tell him. He'd try to stop me. He'd say it's too dangerous. But I can't wait anymore. I can't let them get away with it.

I'm scared. But I'm also hopeful. For the first time in months, I feel like I'm doing something that matters.

The next entry was dated three days later.

It was blank.

I closed the journal. I set it on the bed beside me. I stared at the wall.

She was going to win. She had everything. And then she died.

I thought about Julian's father. I thought about the envelope. The accounts. The transfers. I thought about how he'd destroyed her. How he'd destroyed my family. How he'd gotten away with it for years.

I thought about what I was going to do.

---

The next morning, I found Adrian in his office.

I didn't knock. I just walked in.

"I need everything you have on Henry Ashford," I said.

He looked up. He set down his pen.

"I already gave you everything."

"Not everything. I need the financial records. The wire transfers. The shell companies. All of it."

He studied me. "What did you find?"

"Proof. My mother had proof. She was going to expose him. And then she died."

He didn't respond. He just waited.

"I want to finish what she started," I said. "I want to take everything from him. I want him to lose what she lost."

Adrian stood. He walked around his desk. He stopped in front of me.

"You're not her," he said.

"I know."

"You're not going to die."

"I know."

"Do you?"

I looked at him. He looked at me.

"I'm not going to die," I said. "I'm going to win."

He held my gaze. Then he nodded.

"Good," he said.

---

We spent the next three days building the case.

Felix worked around the clock. Sloane coordinated with Adrian's legal team. I provided every detail I could remember—names, dates, accounts, conversations. Everything.

Adrian worked beside me. He didn't sleep. He barely ate. He just worked.

On the third night, I found him in his office at midnight. He was staring at a photograph. His father. I recognized the resemblance.

"You should sleep," I said.

"So should you."

I walked to his desk. I sat across from him.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked.

He didn't answer immediately. He just looked at the photograph.

"My father trusted the wrong people," he said. "He thought Henry Ashford was his friend. He thought they were partners. And then Henry destroyed him."

"How?"

"He framed him. For fraud. For embezzlement. For things he didn't do. My father lost everything. His company. His reputation. His will to live."

I didn't respond. I just waited.

"He died three years later. A heart attack. The doctors said it was stress. I knew it was Henry."

I reached across the desk. I didn't take his hand. I just rested my fingers near his. Close enough to touch. Not touching.

"I'm sorry," I said.

He looked at me. His eyes were dark. Unreadable.

"I don't want your pity," he said.

"I'm not offering pity. I'm offering understanding."

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

After a while, he said, "When this is over—when Henry is destroyed, when Julian is destroyed, when Volkov is neutralized—what do you want?"

I considered the question. I'd been so focused on the goal. On the revenge. On the endgame. I hadn't thought about what came after.

"I don't know," I said.

"Then figure it out."

"I'm trying."

He reached for my hand. This time, he took it. His fingers were warm. Steady.

"I'll help you," he said.

I looked at our hands. I looked at him.

"Okay," I said.

We sat there. The photograph of his father watched us from the desk. The city hummed outside. The clock ticked.

After a while, I leaned my head against his shoulder. He didn't move. He just let me.

We stayed there until the sun came up.

I woke up before the sun.Not because of a nightmare. Not because of a plan. Not because of anything. I just woke up. The room was dark. The city was quiet. Adrian was beside me. His breathing was slow. Steady. I listened to it for a while. Then I got up.I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island. The sky outside the window started to lighten. Gray. Then pink. Then gold.I didn't think about Volkov. I didn't think about Julian. I didn't think about Henry. I didn't think about my father. I didn't think about Mira. I just drank my coffee. And for the first time in two lifetimes, that was enough.Adrian appeared behind me. He poured himself a cup. He sat across from me."You're up early," he said."I slept."He looked at me. He didn't say anything. He didn't need to.We drank in silence. The kitchen was warm. The city hummed outside. After a while, he said, "What do you want to do today?"I considered the question. • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Nineteen: The Vow

Adrian asked me to renew our vows on a Monday. Not with a grand gesture. Not with flowers or candles or a speech. He asked over breakfast, in the same tone he used to discuss the weather."I want to renew our vows," he said.I set down my coffee. "What?""I want to renew our vows. Not because anything's wrong. Not because I want to start over. Because I want to say it again. In front of the people who matter. Without a contract. Without a plan. Just us."I looked at him. He looked at me."When?""This weekend. If you want."I considered the question. I thought about the first wedding. The small chapel. The simple vows. The people who had stood beside us. I thought about everything that had come after. Everything we'd survived. Everything we'd built."Okay," I said.He didn't smile. But something in his expression shifted. Something warm."Good," he said.---The ceremony was even smaller than the first one.Just us. Just Daniel. Just Thomas. Just Beatriz. Just Felix. Just Sloane. A ha

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter One Hundred Eighteen: The Peace

It came without warning. Not peace like a lightning strike. Not peace like a revelation. Just a morning when I woke up and nothing hurt. No tightness in my chest. No weight on my shoulders. No voice in the back of my head telling me I wasn't done yet.I lay in bed for a long time. The light came through the curtains. The city hummed outside. I listened to it. I didn't count the cracks. I didn't think about the past. I just lay there.Adrian was beside me. He was still asleep. His breathing was slow. Steady. I watched him for a while. The way his chest rose and fell. The way his hand lay open on the pillow between us. Close enough to touch. I didn't touch it. I didn't need to.I got up. I walked to the kitchen. I made coffee. I sat at the island and drank it slowly. The city woke up around me. Cars. Lights. People. I watched it all through the window. It didn't feel like a threat. It didn't feel like something I had to survive. It just felt like a city. Like a place where people lived.

The prison was two hours north of the city.I drove alone. I didn't tell Adrian. I didn't tell Daniel. I just got in the car and drove. The same way I'd driven to the cemetery. The same way I'd driven to my father's cabin. The same way I'd driven to every difficult thing I'd ever had to face. The building was gray. Concrete. Windowless. The kind of place that was designed to make you feel small before you even walked through the door.I parked. I sat in the car for a long time. I didn't move. I didn't breathe. I just sat there. Then I got out.---The visiting room was large.Tables. Chairs. Vending machines. A guard by the door. Fluorescent lights that hummed. The kind of room where people spoke in low voices and tried not to cry.I sat at a table near the back. I waited.Mira walked in five minutes later. She looked different. Thinner. Paler. Her hair was pulled back. No makeup. No jewelry. Just a plain gray uniform and hands that wouldn't stop moving. She sat across from me. She di

The firm hit its first major milestone on a Wednesday.I didn't plan it. I didn't expect it. Sarah came into my office that morning with a folder and a look on her face I hadn't seen before."We closed the Grayson case," she said.I set down my pen. "What?""The Grayson case. The man whose business partner disappeared. We found him. He's alive. He's in witness protection. He testified against the people who threatened him."I looked at her. She looked at me."We closed it.""We closed it."She set the folder on my desk. I opened it. The report. The evidence. The outcome. Everything we'd worked on for months. Everything we'd built.I closed the folder. I looked at the window. At the city. At the light."Good," I said.Sarah nodded. She didn't smile. But something in her expression shifted.
