Chapter Twenty-Six: The Documents

Victor's evidence filled three boxes.

Felix spread everything across the conference table. Documents. Photographs. Recordings. Letters. Bank statements. Everything my mother had gathered before she died—and everything Victor had kept hidden for fifteen years.

I stood at the head of the table. Adrian was beside me. Sloane was by the door. Felix, Priya, and Marcus sat with notebooks open.

"This is everything," Felix said. "Everything Victor had. Everything your mother collected. Everything we need."

I walked around the table. I picked up a photograph. My mother. Standing outside a building I didn't recognize. She was smiling. She looked happy.

I set it down.

"Start from the beginning," I said. "Walk me through it."

Felix nodded. He opened a folder.

"Your mother began investigating Henry Ashford three years before her death. She suspected him of fraud. Money laundering. Connections to organized crime."

"She was right."

"She was. She documented everything. Meetings. Transactions. Names. Dates. She built a case that would have destroyed him."

"But she never got to use it."

"No. She died before she could."

I looked at the evidence. The photographs. The documents. The recordings.

"What about Julian?" I asked.

Felix pulled out another folder. "Julian was involved from the beginning. He helped his father cover up the crimes. He helped move money. He helped destroy evidence."

"And Mira?"

"Mira was a pawn. She didn't know the full extent of what Julian was doing. But she knew enough. She helped siphon money from the trust fund. She helped keep you distracted."

I nodded. I'd suspected as much.

"What about Volkov?"

Felix's expression changed. "Volkov is different. He's not just a criminal. He's a partner. He and Henry built an empire together. Drugs. Weapons. Money laundering. Everything."

"And Julian?"

"Julian was the legitimate face. He ran the businesses. He kept the accounts. He made sure everything looked clean."

I sat down. I looked at the evidence. The photographs. The documents. The recordings.

"We have everything," I said. "We have enough to destroy all of them."

Adrian spoke for the first time. "We have enough to destroy Henry. We have enough to destroy Julian. But Volkov is different."

"How?"

"He's not going to go quietly. He's not going to let us take everything from him. He's going to fight."

"Then we fight back."

Adrian looked at me. His eyes were dark. Unreadable.

"You're not afraid," he said.

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I've already died once. I'm not afraid of dying again."

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

"We need a plan," Felix said. "A real plan. Not just evidence. Not just exposure. We need to take them down piece by piece."

I nodded. "Then that's what we'll do."

---

The next three days were chaos.

Felix worked with Priya and Marcus to organize the evidence. They built a timeline. They connected the dots. They prepared a dossier that would make Henry Ashford's crimes impossible to deny.

Sloane coordinated with Adrian's legal team. They prepared filings. They contacted journalists. They made sure every piece of evidence was airtight.

Adrian worked around the clock. He didn't sleep. He barely ate. He just worked.

I worked beside him. I provided every detail I could remember. Names. Dates. Conversations. I gave them everything.

On the second night, I found Adrian in his office at midnight. He was staring at a photograph. Henry and Volkov. Shaking hands.

"You should sleep," I said.

"So should you."

I walked to his desk. I sat across from him.

"What are you thinking about?" I asked.

He didn't answer immediately. He just looked at the photograph.

"My father," he said. "He trusted Henry. He thought they were friends. And then Henry destroyed him."

"How?"

"He framed him. For fraud. For embezzlement. For things he didn't do. My father lost everything. His company. His reputation. His will to live."

I didn't respond. I just waited.

"He died three years later. A heart attack. The doctors said it was stress. I knew it was Henry."

I reached across the desk. I didn't take his hand. I just rested my fingers near his. Close enough to touch. Not touching.

"I'm sorry," I said.

He looked at me. His eyes were dark. Unreadable.

"I don't want your pity," he said.

"I'm not offering pity. I'm offering understanding."

He held my gaze. Neither of us spoke.

After a while, he said, "When this is over—when Henry is destroyed, when Julian is destroyed, when Volkov is neutralized—what do you want?"

I considered the question. I'd been so focused on the goal. On the revenge. On the endgame. I hadn't thought about what came after.

"I don't know," I said.

"Then figure it out."

"I'm trying."

He reached for my hand. This time, he took it. His fingers were warm. Steady.

"I'll help you," he said.

I looked at our hands. I looked at him.

"Okay," I said.

We sat there. The photograph of Henry and Volkov watched us from the desk. The city hummed outside. The clock ticked.

After a while, I leaned my head against his shoulder. He didn't move. He just let me.

We stayed there until the sun came up.

The boutique was empty when I arrived.I'd called ahead. I'd asked for a private fitting. The owner, a woman named Elise, had agreed without hesitation. Money did that. It opened doors and closed mouths. I'd learned that from Julian. I was using it now for myself.Elise met me at the entrance. She was older. Elegant. Silver hair pulled back. She didn't ask questions. She just led me to the back room, where the dresses were displayed on mannequins like works of art."I have several options," she said. "What are you looking for?""Something red."She paused. She looked at me. "Red is bold.""I know."She nodded. She walked to a rack and pulled out three dresses. She held them up one by one. The first was too soft. The second was too busy. The third was simple. Clean lines. Deep red. The kind of dress that didn't ask for attention. It demanded it."That one," I said. She smiled. "You have good taste."---The fitting took an hour.Elise adjusted the hem. She pinned the waist. She didn't

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Forty-Six: The Gala Preparation

Adrian found me in my office with the invitation in my hand.I hadn't told him about it. I hadn't told anyone. Felix had brought it to me that morning, and I'd spent the rest of the day staring at it. Cream envelope. Gold lettering. The same charity gala Julian had attended the year before. The same one where he'd threatened me. The same one where Adrian had played the recording that started everything."You're going," he said.It wasn't a question.I set the invitation down. "Yes.""No."I looked up. He was standing in the doorway. His jaw was tight. His hands were in his pockets. He didn't come inside."You don't get to decide that," I said."I'm not deciding. I'm telling you it's a bad idea.""Julian will be there. You know he will.""Which is exactly why you shouldn't go."I stood. I walked around my desk. I stopped a few feet from him."He threatened me at the last gala," I said. "He stood in front of a hundred people and called me a liar. He tried to humiliate me. And I walked o

Adrian told me about his father on a Tuesday. We were in his office. Felix had just left. The door was closed. I was standing by the bookshelf when he said my name."Elena."I turned. He was looking at a photograph. His father. The one he kept in the drawer."What?"He set it down. He looked up."My father didn't die of a heart attack."I didn't move. I just waited."Henry Ashford had him killed."The words landed. I walked to the chair across from his desk. I sat."How do you know?""A witness. Someone who worked for Henry. He was dying. He wanted to clear his conscience.""You believed him?""I verified it. Every date. Every payment. Every detail. It was all true."I looked at him. He looked at me."Why didn't you go to the authorities?""Henry would have buried it. He has lawyers. He has connections. He has decades of practice at making evidence disappear.""So you waited.""I built my case. I prepared. And then you walked into my office."I didn't respond."I wasn't going to tell

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride    Chapter Forty-Four: The Evidence

Adrian made the call at midnight. Not a meeting. Not a discussion. A decision. He picked up his phone and dialed Felix. He said four words: "Send it. All of it."Then he hung up.I was standing in his doorway. I'd been on my way to tell him Julian had booked a flight. The words died in my throat."You already knew," I said."I've been tracking his travel for a week. He booked the ticket yesterday. False name. No return.""You didn't tell me.""I didn't want you to panic."I stared at him. He stared back."I don't panic," I said."I know. That's why I waited."I walked into his office. I sat across from him. I didn't speak."We're out of time," he said. "Henry is in custody. Julian is running. If we wait, he disappears. If we don't, we lose everything.""So you made the call without me.""I made the call for you."I looked at him. He looked at me."Don't do that again," I said.He didn't respond. He just nodded.---The files went out at 12:47.Felix sent them to every major outlet. Pr

  • The Billionaire's Rebirth Bride   Chapter Forty-Three: The Roses

Sloane found the florist before I finished my coffee. She walked into my office at seven in the morning, still in her training clothes, and set a receipt on my desk."White roses. Delivered to the cemetery three days ago. Paid for in cash."I picked up the receipt. No name. No address. Just a florist's stamp and a time."Who ordered them?""The owner doesn't remember. Cash customers don't leave impressions."I set the receipt down. "Then we find someone who does."---The florist was a small shop on the east side. The kind of place that had been there for thirty years and would be there for thirty more. Sloane waited outside. I walked in alone. The woman behind the counter was older. Gray hair. Reading glasses on a chain. She looked up when I entered."Can I help you?""I'm here about a delivery. White roses. Three days ago. To the cemetery on Mill Road."She frowned. She set down her magazine."I remember that one."I kept my voice even. "Do you remember who ordered it?"She thought

No markings.Adrian was already there. He hadn't opened it. He was waiting for me."Together," he said.I nodded. I opened it.Inside was a photograph. My mother's grave. The headstone.
