CATALINA

Silence drenched the room after my livid declaration directed at Tiffany and the rest. At this point, I didn't even bother to hold back anymore since it was clear they didn't intend to give me face.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, a voice of reason wondered if I was being dramatic.

The truth? At this point, I knew I was being overdramatic.

But not unreasonable.

One of the terms stated in the contract I signed was the promise to always keep the room under lock and key when I wasn't around. Theodore didn't tell me the exact reason but I guessed it had something to do with his family members.

Now, my suspicions were raised more than ever.

Tiffany finally blinked out of her stupor and turned sharply to Henrietta, whose face twisted in disbelief. “Did you hear that?” she hissed, pointing a perfectly manicured nail at me. “She just insulted you in front of everyone. You can't let that slide.”

I rolled my eyes so hard it almost hurt.

CATALINAThe members of the Knight family were really something else. When I demanded an apology from Henrietta and Dorothy, they simply fell silent and stared at me like I had uttered something forbidden. The mere thought of taking accountability for their mistakes seemed to be a foreign concept, and it was fucking ridiculous. “You're kidding, right?” Dorothy let out a nervous chuckle after she shared a look with my mother-in-law. “I'm the victim here. And you want me to apologize?”I gave her a look that betrayed my thoughts. Did I look like I gave a flying fuck about her earrings now?I arched an eyebrow. “Did I mispronounce those English words wrongly?” The women shared another look with each other, leaving me feeling more indignant than before. They clearly had no problems accusing me of doing stealing their precious jewelry and insulting me, but now they couldn't even tell me sorry?Henrietta's eyes landed on her son before she turned her face away. Just I was about to repea

THEODORE“Wait!”We turned our heads to see Madeline walking towards the door, looking flushed and slightly out of breath. Before she could step inside, a guard swiftly intercepted her with an arm outstretched. “I’m sorry, ma’am,” he said firmly, “only family members are permitted inside.”Madeline froze. Her face drained of color, and her lips parted slightly in disbelief. Even though she had not yet married my uncle, Liam, she had been treated like one of us since we were dating. The fact that she had been reminded of the cold, hard truth about her status was suddenly too much for her to bear.Fortunately, my mother immediately came to the rescue. She closed the distance between them to comfort her. “But Madeline is part of our family,” she said. “I want her to watch the video with us, Theo. Can she do that?”Everyone's eyes turned to me.Great. Trust my mother to leave all the hard decisions to me.I should’ve agreed immediately. Showing Madeline I still cared—that had been my mi

THEODORE I couldn't believe I said it. When I saw Catalina arguing with my mother and aunt, an uncomfortable feeling across in my chest. And for the first time since we met, it was not directed at her. At first, I wanted to scold her for daring to talk to the elders of the family like that. But something in her eyes betrayed her emotions when my mother insulted Chyna. Anger. Hurt. Disgust. It was like she couldn't fathom the reason behind my mother's reckless words. I knew it had connected with her past, but it was very rare to see someone who was ready to fight for others. Even when it wasn't certain that the action would be reciprocated. Before I could stop myself, I was moving. My legs carried me toward her stiff, shaking frame, and my arms found their way around her waist, pulling her close without a second thought. She stiffened for a moment, startled, but then I breathed her scent, the tension that had been clawing at my chest slowly began to ease.A sharp cry escaped Ma

CATALINA“Help!” the woman screamed, her shrill voice cutting through the quiet like a knife. “My diamonds have been stolen!”Everyone immediately rushed out of the kitchen when they heard the scream. A woman stood on the staircase, her skin pale as she held onto the rails like she was fighting for her life. Each step she took as she descended the stairs was slow and shaky, yet she still managed to reach us in a matter of seconds. Dorothy. I learned her name on the night of the first dinner I had in the mansion, but it wasn't because she was so unforgettable. Theodore told me she was his uncle's wife, but she was definitely not our ally. Duly noted.Dorothy’s elegant silk robe was slightly wrinkled, her perfectly coiffed hair falling out of its pins. She looked less like a victim and more like a storm about to break. My mother-in-law watched her complain for a few seconds before she stepped forward to question her. “What diamonds are you talking about, Dorothy?” She scolded, her vo

CATALINAThe scent of espresso and faint traces of lavender polish lingered in the air as I stepped into the kitchen. Sunlight poured in through the windows, golden and blinding, but my focus was as sharp as ever.Suddenly, Chyna made her way towards me with a concerned expression. Once she was by my side, she grabbed my hand and led me straight to a corner of the kitchen. “Hey,” she began, passing me an apron to wear. When she saw how confused I was, she released a sigh and turned me around. “Did you say anything to your mother-in-law?”I froze slightly, trying my best to keep my tone neutral. “What do you mean?”“I—” Chyna's words died down as the sound of oil sizzling on the pan. We turned to the sight of Henrietta staring right back at us. My mother-in-law placed her hands on her hips. “Catalina, what are you doing over there?” she called out. “Why don't you come over and cook?”Chyna and I shared a look before I set down my cup of water. This woman was really more difficult th
