Chapter one
Emily ~•~ The sun hung low over the ocean, casting a golden shimmer across the waves as I relaxed on the balcony of my private villa. The soft crash of the tide below mixed with the rustling of palm trees, created a soothing melody that should have made me feel at peace. But even in paradise, I still felt a sense of unease. I took my phone, angling the screen so my sister, Emma, could see the breathtaking view. “Can you believe this place? He really outdid himself this time,” I said with a small smile, referring to my husband, Nathan. He had surprised me with this trip, an extravagant escape to a secluded island resort, just the two of us, away from the noise of our busy lives. Emma, lounging on her couch back home, sipped from her wine glass and smirked. “I don’t know if I should be happy for you or incredibly jealous. Seriously, Emily, this looks like something out of a movie.” I chuckled, but it was a little forced. I love Nathan. At least, I had loved him. But lately, something has been off. The surprise trip was supposed to bring us closer, to fix whatever cracks had begun to form between us. And yet, even now, sitting here in this dreamlike setting, I couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. In the middle of our conversation, Emma’s expression shifted. Her brows knitted together, and she leaned closer to the screen. “Emily, who’s that behind you?” A chill ran down my spine. I turned my head slowly, my heart hammering in my chest. But when I looked the balcony doors were open and all I could see was an invitation on the table. I didn’t see anybody behind me. The person must’ve dropped the card and left immediately. “I’ll call you later Emma,” I said to my sister as I hung up the phone. Curiosity had filled me up and I didn’t know if I should wait for Nathan or not. I had promised myself to not interfere in his business after seeing the way he acted the last time I did. Our marriage was on the verge of breaking till I told him I was pregnant. He became all sweet but unfortunately, I lost the baby at two months. Things had been weird between us until he arranged this trip for us. Now he’s been gone for three hours and I had no other option than to open the invitation. “I’m going to do this anyway,” I said to myself. I walked towards the table in my white bikini set with a brown wrap around my waist. I took a deep breath not knowing what to expect as I opened the letter. “Oh my gosh!” “You’ve been invited to a private dinner party by Mr. Nathaniel Luke, there’s a dress for you in the closet, a driver will be waiting to pick you up, don’t be late!” I read out loud. Immediately I processed the information that I had just read, and I screamed. I always thought our marriage was coming to an end but he has proved me wrong these past few days. “I need to get ready,” I said to myself. As I stood in front of the full-length mirror adjusting the red dress Nathan had left for me, I couldn’t help but realize how much of myself I had lost trying to prove myself to him over the years. It’s crazy that it’s all going to be worth it in a matter of time. He had started to see the efforts I was putting into our marriage. It was nice to know that he had started matching my efforts. I opened my jewelry box and wore a pair of gold earrings that my mother had given me. Then an arm cuff and gold heels to match. I headed out of the room to the elevator. I could tell I was looking captivated because of how everyone looked at me in the general villa. As I rushed out of the elevator trying not to be late so the night didn’t get ruined, a familiar face walked up to me. “You’re Emily right?” The blonde woman with blue eyes asked. I raised a brow. “Yes, I am. Is there a reason you asked?” I raised a skeptical brow at her. . “I helped set up the dinner that your husband invited you for and I overheard…” My phone buzzed with text messages from Nathan and I was forced to cut her off.“ I really would have loved to hear you out but my husband needs me and I don’t want to be late, maybe some other time”. “Wait!” She kept trying to get me to listen to her but I sprinted and walked towards the cab that Nathan had gotten me. The car was sleek, black, and unfamiliar. The driver, a man in a crisp suit, greeted me with a polite nod but didn’t speak. As we drove through the city streets, I pressed my hands together in my lap, staring at the passing lights. The ride was pretty smooth and quiet but I couldn’t help but wonder what the blonde-haired woman wanted to say. Whatever it was, I’m sure this dinner was more important. We arrived at a fancy location. I don’t know what I was expecting but this was way beyond my imagination. The room was decorated with gold chairs and tables. The ambiance was spectacular. On one end I saw a band of young men playing the violin and other instruments, what you would call an orchestra. The other end was filled with people who had been invited to the dinner. I scanned the room with my eyes to see if I could spot Nathan anywhere. And there he was. Nathan stood at one end, his presence filling the space effortlessly. Tall, and broad-shouldered, his tailored suit molding perfectly to his frame. His dark hair was neatly combed back, and his strong jaw was freshly shaven. But it was his eyes, sharp, assessing, always watching that made me hesitate. For a brief moment, I felt like she was walking into something more than just dinner. “You look beautiful,” he said, his voice smooth and warm. I smiled, stepping forward as he pulled out a chair. “You’re full of surprises tonight.” He poured us both a glass of deep red wine, the liquid swirling like ink in the dim light. “I thought we could use a night just for us.” I studied him as he spoke, noting the careful way he measured his words. There was a distance in him, a characteristic I had once admired. But now, it unsettles me. The waiter arrived, placing the first course in front of us. Something delicate, plated with artistic precision. I picked up my fork, but I wasn’t thinking about the food. I was thinking about the way Nathan’s eyes never left me. About the weight of this moment. About the woman who had stopped me earlier. And about the feeling that, despite the romance of it all, I was not just here for dinner. I was here for something else. Something I didn’t understand yet.Emily’s POVThe city moved faster than it should have. I was trying so hard not to look back. I could feel my heart pounding in my throat. I leaned my head against the window of the car, my arms wrapped around myself. The scene kept replaying in my head like it was registered in my memory. My mother’s laughter, my father’s peace, and the little girl’s eyes. I pulled out my phone from inside my bag. My fingers were hovering around the screen before finally opening the photo. As I zoomed in, I noticed a birthmark that ran in our family. It was on her left cheek. She was definitely my sister’s daughter. My chest tightened again. “Are you okay ma’am?” The driver asked. He’d been giving me glances since the incident with my parents. “I’m fine,” I said quickly, adjusting myself into the seat. But really, I wasn’t fine. By the time we got to the hotel, my chest was pounding even harder. I barely remembered thanking the driver as I stepped out of the car. The elevator ride felt lon
Nathan’s POVThe gala didn’t go as expected. Seeing Emily there with him was infuriating. I watched him rub his hands all over her like she belonged to him. Emma, on the other hand, was more focused on attracting more investors than on meddling in any sort of drama. Now that she’d become a mom, her utmost priority was our daughter, Lara. She’d sworn that she’d do everything to protect her and provide for her. We’d dropped Lara with her grandparents for the weekend, so we could focus on the gala. Emma’s parents were more than happy to receive her, especially since they had already lost Emily. I stretched my hands in the air before getting out of bed. Emma was nowhere to be seen. Soon enough a notification lit up my screen. It was a text from her. [ I’ve gone to see some friends, I’d pick Lara up from my parents when I’m done.] I gave a thumbs up to the message. She’d been avoiding a conversation since the gala. Maybe she actually felt guilty for betraying her sister and taking he
Emily’s POVThe morning light in New York always felt warm. But to me, it reminded me of my troubled past. I stood by the window, watching cars go by. Three years ago, I left this city for good and now, I was contemplating coming back for work. My hands curled around the mug as I took a sip of coffee to my mouth. Back then, everything unraveled too fast. The cheating, the betrayal, my sister, and the press conference that sealed everything. The NDA had been clear. Silence in exchange for an apartment so he could do damage control. Even if that didn’t work out, Tara got the apartment. My phone buzzed beside me. [Are you still coming?] I read the message with a small smile on my face before texting back. [Send me the address, I’ll be there soon.] As I dropped my phone, I felt Luca wrap his arms around my waist. “Who’s making my love smile on her phone this morning?” He asked. I let out a small chuckle before turning around. “It’s Tara,” I responded. “I’m going to see her tod
Emily’s POV “Is anything the matter?” Luca’s voice cut across the hallway. “Nothing,” I answered as I walked toward him.As I walked away from Nathan, I could feel his eyes watching me closely. It made me uncomfortable. It had been three years since I last had an encounter with him. I had no idea why I still felt this way. I didn’t love him anymore. My body however, didn’t forget to respond to his touch. I took a deep breath to pull myself together. “What was he saying to you?” Luca asked. His hands were tighter on my waist. I could tell he was jealous. I took a deep breath before answering. “He wasn’t saying anything important. Let’s not talk about it.”He replied. “I don’t want him to hurt you anymore. Otherwise, I’ll break his hands.”I didn’t laugh. Neither did I respond. I knew Luca well enough to know that he’d actually do it. We got back to the main auditorium a few minutes later. Emma stood at the far end, scheming and talking to investors. I didn’t care, I just wante
Chapter 34 Nathan’s POV Emma and I arrived at the Gala at exactly 6pm. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The cameras flashed at us the minute we stepped out of the black SUV. Emma wore a beautiful gold dress and elegant jewelry. All eyes were on her. She loved the attention and she knew exactly how to draw it.“Over here, sir.” One man from the paparazzi shouted. We paused for a second before going into the building. “Smile. They’re looking at us.” Emma murmured as she wrapped her hand around my arm.I was too distracted by the ambience of the building to focus on what she was saying. I scanned the room to look for investors, business partners, and of course Luca. Our eyes met for a second before he turned back. “Who are you looking at? Emma asked intrigued. “Luca,” I responded, pointing at him. “That’s him?” She added. “Yes. That’s my annoying business partner.” I replied. He took another glance in my direction but this time at Emma. Her expression changed, just for a
Emily’s POV I stared at the clock continuously whilst waiting for Luca to come back. “He should be back by now,” I muttered to myself as I rocked my chair back and forth. He had mentioned that he was going to Nathan’s company for a meeting. I didn’t buy the idea but he wouldn’t listen. I only agreed to come back to New York for the Gala. Not for anything else. Why did I care so much? If anything, I should be happy. I grabbed a glass of water from the table and took a sip. I needed to calm down a bit. The soft click from the door unlocking distracted me from my thoughts. I looked up suddenly and eager to see if it was Luca. He stepped in, calm and collected like he always had been. I immediately stood up and walked towards him. “Welcome back. How was it?” I asked. He didn’t respond immediately. He took a deep sigh before fixing his gaze on me. “I know you’ve been dying to see me. Don’t tell me you’ve been sitting on that chair since I left.” I let out a small chuckle. Pfffft. W
Nathan’s POVThe agreement didn’t come all at once.It arrived in fragments. Carefully worded sentences, exchanged glances, pauses heavy with implication. The kind of consensus that pretended to be mutual while quietly cornering you.The chairman cleared his throat. “The board believes the narrativ
Nathan’s POVThe car was waiting for me at the garage. I slid into the back seat and shut the door forcefully. “Good morning, sir.”I looked up. The driver wasn’t Charles. It was a different voice. And the person sounded younger. “Morning,” I said. “Where’s Charles?”“Retired last week,” he repl
Nathan’s POVI stared at my phone waiting for a message from her. I wanted her to reply so badly. I hated that she left my message unanswered. I turned my phone upside down. Then it buzzed. I quickly picked it up thinking it was a message from Emily. It was Julian. I opened the message. [Invest
