The shrill ringtone echoed inside the quiet car, making Ava's heart pound against her ribs.

Daniel.

His name glowed brightly on the screen, mocking every promise he had ever made. She stared at it for several seconds, remembering the countless times she'd smiled whenever his name appeared. Back then, a single call from him could brighten her entire day. Now, it made her stomach turn. The phone continued to ring.

Adrian didn't rush her. He simply sat beside her, his hands resting calmly on his lap, watching her with quiet patience. There was no curiosity in his expression, no expectation, just the calm confidence of someone who understood that certain decisions had to be made alone. "You don't have to answer if you don't want to," he said softly. Ava let out a shaky breath and pressed the red button. The call ended. Almost immediately, another one came in.

Then another.

Daniel wasn't giving up. Her thumb hovered over the screen before she switched the phone off completely. The silence that followed felt strangely satisfying, like closing the final chapter of a painful story. "I think that's the first time I've ever ignored his calls," she admitted, forcing a smile. "And how does it feel?"

She looked out the window, watching raindrops race down the glass."...Like I can finally breathe." Adrian nodded, as though that was exactly the answer he had expected. For a while, neither of them spoke. The silence between them wasn't awkward. It was comfortable, almost soothing, and Ava found herself relaxing for the first time since that awful morning.

It was strange.

She had known Adrian Kingsley for less than an hour, yet sitting beside him felt easier than spending an entire day with people she'd called family. Perhaps it was because he wasn't asking her to pretend. He wasn't telling her to smile through her pain or insisting everything would be fine. He simply allowed her to feel exactly what she was feeling. "I have another question," she said eventually.

He turned to her.

"Go ahead."

"Why didn't you get married?" The question slipped out before she could stop it. She bit her lip. "I'm sorry. That's probably too personal." Instead of looking offended, Adrian gave a quiet laugh.

"I was wondering how long it would take before you asked."

"So...?"

His expression became thoughtful.

"I was engaged once."

Ava remembered the articles she'd seen years ago. Adrian Kingsley and Sophia Bennett had been the city's golden couple. Every magazine had predicted a lavish wedding that would dominate headlines.

Then, without warning, the engagement ended.

No explanation. No interview. Nothing.

"The media said she left you."

"They were wrong."

"You ended it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

His gaze drifted back to the rain-covered window.

"Because I realized we were building a future that looked perfect on paper, but neither of us was truly happy."

There was no bitterness in his voice.

Only acceptance.

"I cared about her," he continued quietly, "but caring for someone isn't always enough to spend your life with them."

Ava lowered her eyes.

His words struck painfully close to home.

She had loved Daniel with everything she had.

Yet somehow, love hadn't been enough to stop him from betraying her.

"I suppose that's true," she whispered.

The chauffeur interrupted gently.

"Sir, the doctors just called."

Adrian straightened.

"What happened?"

"They've finished preparing Mr. Kingsley for surgery."

"And?"

"They're still waiting for your answer."

He nodded before turning back to Ava.

"I know this is unfair."

"You don't owe me anything."

"If you say no, I'll understand."

She looked at him for a long moment.

His eyes held none of the arrogance people often associated with billionaires.

He wasn't trying to buy her help.

He wasn't manipulating her.

For the first time that day, someone was asking instead of demanding.

"My grandfather has always believed that love is the greatest blessing a person can receive," Adrian said quietly. "When my parents died, he raised me alone. Every birthday, every graduation, every success in my life... he was there."

His voice softened.

"I don't want his last memory to be worrying that I'll spend the rest of my life alone."

The vulnerability in his words caught Ava completely off guard.

This wasn't the cold billionaire the newspapers loved to write about.

This was simply a grandson who was terrified of losing the man who had raised him.

Her heart ached.

"Your grandfather..." she began carefully. "Does he know about your engagement?"

"No."

"And if I agree..."

"He'll believe you're the woman I intend to marry."

She smiled faintly.

"That's quite a promotion for someone you met in the rain."

For the first time, Adrian laughed—a genuine, warm laugh that softened the sharpness of his features.

"I suppose it is."

Ava found herself smiling with him.

She shouldn't have noticed how handsome he looked when he smiled.

She definitely shouldn't have felt the tiny flutter in her chest.

Yet she did.

Taking a deep breath, she met his eyes.

"I'll do it."

Relief flashed across his face before it disappeared behind his usual calm expression.

"Thank you."

"But..."

She raised a finger.

"This is only to help your grandfather."

"Understood."

"And after the surgery..."

"We'll discuss what happens next."

She nodded.

"Good."

Adrian opened the car door and stepped out before walking around to her side. As she reached for the handle, he was already there, holding the door open.

She placed her hand in his without thinking.

His fingers closed gently around hers, steadying her as she stepped onto the pavement.

The touch lasted only a second.

Yet neither of them pulled away immediately.

Their eyes met.

For the briefest moment, the noise of the hospital faded.

There were no reporters.

No cheating fiancé.

No fake relationship.

Just two strangers standing far too close to each other.

Ava was the first to look away.

"We should go."

"Yes," Adrian replied, though his voice had grown noticeably quieter.

They had barely reached the hospital entrance when a luxury sports car screeched to a halt behind them.

A tall woman stepped out, removing her sunglasses with slow, deliberate grace.

She was breathtakingly beautiful.

Long chestnut hair framed a face that belonged on magazine covers, and the confidence in her stride suggested she had never doubted her place in anyone's life.

The moment Adrian saw her, his expression changed.

Not with happiness.

Not with anger.

With surprise.

The woman's eyes moved from Adrian... to Ava... then to the way their hands were still loosely intertwined.

A slow smile curved across her red lips.

"So..." she said, her voice silky smooth.

"I leave the country for six months..."

"...and you replace me with a bride?"

Ava frowned, sensing the tension instantly.

Before she could ask who the woman was, Adrian released her hand and spoke a name that made the air between them grow cold.

"...Sophia."
