Chapter 19

Kai lay on his side, his head propped up on his arm. I mirrored his position and watched him. He lifted my free arm and stroked a small patch on the underside.

“What’s this?” he asked, eyebrow raised, looking at me strangely.

I had no idea, so I twisted my arm to look around and saw a smudge of green ink. I had definitely missed that.

“It’s ink. I don’t know how it got there,” I replied.

My laptop was out of commission and I had wanted to experience writing on pen and paper. Unused to the drying of fountain pen ink, this was a blunder that I had to beat myself up about.

“Writing some letters?” he asked, settling his hand onto my hip.

How much could I tell him? To my own detriment, I ignored Aria and all the advice I had been given.

“No. I’m a writer. I write a lot. I was writing on paper on my flight here.”

Kai startled. “You’re not from here, then?” I shook my head.

“I’m from C City,” I told him as I bit my lip
