For a moment, Elena couldn't hear anything.

She stared at the photograph in Alexander Vance's hand, at the two newborn girls lying side by side, and then at Catherine, who looked as though she had just watched a ghost walk into the chapel.

“That child was registered under Elena Ashbourne's name.”

Catherine's words echoed through Elena's mind.

“No,” Elena said finally. “You must be mistaken.”

Catherine shook her head, tears gathering in her eyes.

“I prayed that I was.”

Elena stepped away from Al

Elena read Amara's message three times, hoping the words would somehow change. And don't trust the man who raised your husband. He's not the only Sterling who is still alive. She looked at Alexander. His expression had become unreadable, but the hand holding his phone was clenched tightly enough to turn his knuckles white.“Edward has a twin brother?” she asked.“That's what Daniel said.”“Did you know anything about this?”“No.” Alexander's answer came immediately. “I grew up hearing about Edward's father, but nobody ever mentioned a twin brother. There was never a second son in the family photographs or the records I was allowed to see.”“Maybe he was erased from the family records, too.”Alexander looked at her. “Like one of the babies.”The similarity made Elena's stomach tighten.Three girls had been registered at Northwick on one night. One had apparently been hidden from the records. Two boys might also have been connected to a secret that someone had gone to extraordinary leng

Elena couldn't take her eyes off the photograph.Amara Vance stood outside a university building, wearing a cream blouse and carrying a brown handbag. Her expression was relaxed, almost cheerful, completely unaware that someone had been tracking her movements. The picture looked recent, but it was the handwriting on the back that made Elena's stomach tighten.**The third child is still alive.**Beneath the words was tomorrow's date and the location of Northwick Maternity Chapel.“Where is Amara now?” Elena asked.Nobody answered immediately.Alexander was seated on the edge of the desk while a security officer wrapped a bandage around his injured arm. Blood had stained the sleeve of his shirt, but he barely seemed to notice. His attention remained on Edward, who was being held by two guards.“Where is she?” Alexander repeated, his voice dangerously quiet.Edward looked at the photograph and smiled faintly.“You've always been impatient. That's one of your weaknesses.”“And yours is be

I cannot tell you which baby was raised under which name until we examine the original ledger.”“Then why did you say it was registered under my name?”“Because that is what the transfer document suggests.”Elena looked at Isabelle.“Mother, tell me what happened.”Isabelle opened her mouth, but no words came. She looked at the photograph, t

  • The Billionaire's Ruthless Reclamation    Chapter 103: The Grandmother's Secret

Elena stared at the photograph until the woman's face began to blur.Evelyn Ashbourne was alive. The grandmother Elena had grown up believing was dead sat inside the old Sterling estate as though she had never left it. Her silver hair was neatly arranged, her hands folded on the table, and her expression carried none of the guilt Elena expected from a woman who might have spent decades hiding the truth about three newborn girls.Beside Elena, Alexander read the message again.“Ask your grandmother which of you was supposed to die.”His voice was controlled, but she could hear the anger beneath it.“Which of us?” Elena repeated. “She means me and Isabelle. Or perhaps Amara. Every time we think we've found the answer, another person appears and changes the entire story.”“That's why we need the transfer book.”“And if it's a trap?”“Then we make sure we don't walk into it unprepared.”Elena looked at him. “You aren't going to tell me to stay behind?”“No.” Alexander slipped his phone in

“Edward Sterling.”Lydia Mercer’s whisper barely carried across the hospital room, but it was enough to change the atmosphere completely.Alexander tightened his grip on her wrist as the security guards moved closer. The syringe he had pulled from her hand lay on the floor beside the bed, its contents still unknown. Lydia stared at Elena with frightened, desperate eyes, as though she expected the walls to collapse around them at any moment.“Say that name again,” Alexander demanded. “And explain why you tried to inject Miriam.”Lydia shook her head. “You don't understand what you've walked into.”“Then help us understand.”“You can't protect her from him.”Alexander stepped between Lydia and Elena. “Who are you talking about?”“Edward.”Miriam struggled to sit higher against her pillows. Her face had lost what little color it possessed, but her eyes remained fixed on the woman who had just tried to reach her. “You said you were protecting the girl who was never supposed to survive. Whi

  • The Billionaire's Ruthless Reclamation    Chapter 101: The Baby Marked for Death

Elena read the message three times, hoping the words would somehow change.*One of these children was never registered as alive.*Beneath it was the name she had been struggling to understand for weeks.**ELENA VALE.**She looked at the photograph again. Three newborn girls lay side by side beneath the harsh light of a hospital nursery. Two had white wristbands around their tiny wrists. The third was wrapped in a blanket embroidered with a silver flower. There was something unsettling about the way the photograph had been arranged. The babies were positioned carefully, as though someone had wanted to preserve their appearance for evidence.“Where did this come from?” Elena asked.Isabelle shook her head, unable to take her eyes off the picture.“I've never seen it before.”“But you recognized the silver flower.”“I recognized the symbol. Gabriel showed it to me on a document years ago. He told me it represented a child whose identity had been erased.”“Did he tell you whose identity?”
