"Oh, I'm so sorry." Lena apologized to a maid she had bumped into who wore a tired face and held a large laundry basket filled with silky velvet curtains.

The maid just ignored her and walked away in the direction Lena had seen others walk to.

Lena continued on her way, shielding her eyes from the bright but warm sun which kissed her yellow skin. Her eyes searched the lines of bedsheets and curtains, searching for Alex, who she hadn't seen since the sun came up.

"Need a hand?" Lena asked as soon as she walked up to Alex, who was in the middle of putting up a large cream-colored curtain on a line.

"You should if you can," Alex replied, without taking her eyes off what she was doing. She had her hair packed in a messy bun purposely to keep it from disturbing her, but loose strands still fell around her eyes, making her occasionally wipe them away.

With Lena's help, she was able to get the curtain on the line and straighten it so that it looked like the others which were already up. Lena tucked a loose strand behind her ear and looked around while Alex moved to another line.

"What is going on?" Lena asked, curiosity getting the better of her.

Alex snorted, a little tired. "So you're trying to say we, the laundry maids, don't do anything on a normal day?" She raised an eyebrow, her expression dripping with sarcasm.

Lena chuckled. "Do you launder curtains on a normal day, Alex?" she asked as they both put up the material on the line.

Alex turned to her for the first time and shrugged. "Good point. I'd never do this on a normal day unless a knife was about to pierce my heart." She moved towards another line, her tone dry.

Lena just smiled and shook her head. "Well, it's obvious there's an event coming up."

Alex snorted again. "Not just an event, Lena. It's a briefing."

Lena squinted her eyes both to reduce the sun's ray into her eyes and in a confusion by Alex's words. "What's a briefing?"

Alex stopped and raised a brow. "Really? Lena,"

"I mean, I know what a briefing is. I want to know the purpose of the briefing."

"Well, if you didn't know, the boss's wedding is in a few days and it's like a tradition in their family to hold a briefing before any wedding. But that's if the groom allows it." She replied.

Lena stopped herself from getting angry, as she remembered her conversation with Thane the other day. 'He had the guts to hold a wedding with his wife, who went about wearing a happy mask to the outside world.' she thought

"What do they say in the briefing?" Lena asked, though she knew she was annoying Alex, whose patience was really thin.

"I don't know that Lena, I'm not married. And obviously, I'm not involved with their family, so I have no idea what it's about," she said, finally finishing what she was doing and turning to Lena with a sigh of relief.

"What I do know is, his mom will be at that briefing and she's the last person you'd wish to displease." Alex's face became a little too serious. "Do not mess with her."

Lena felt a shiver run down her spine at her friend's words and Alex seemed to notice her fear as she chuckled. "Now, quit bothering me. I've got a shit ton of work to do." She said and turned around. "What are you out here for, anyway?"

"Marie told me something was dropped off for me?" Lena asked, recalling how her heart had fluttered at the idea that Adrian had finally remembered her.

"Oh that. Dante dropped a phone off for you. From the boss."

"Well, he can go fuck himself!" Lena had heard Tessa scream earlier that evening, after which she marched to her SUV and ordered her driver to take her to her father's house.

Lena couldn't help but wonder why Tessa still loved Thane regardless of the unhealthy number of times they'd had a disagreement. Or was there something else to it?

She'd heard them fuck once, and they were so loud. Was that it? Lena thought as she laid a clean white bedsheet on the king-sized bed, then circled round to tuck in the loose ends.

She'd just reached for the enormous wardrobe to begin dusting it when the door flung open and Thane stood at it with an indifferent expression on his face.

"Sir." Lena mouthed both in shock and confusion about why he'd banged open his own door like that. She brushed it off and avoided his gaze, using the opportunity to thank him for his gift. "I really am grateful for the-"

"Come here," in a flash, Thane banged the door shut and furiously walked towards her. He cupped her face in his hands and locked her lips with his. The rag in Lena's hand fell as her eyes widened in shock.

He smelled like expensive cologne and alcohol.

Lena suddenly pushed him away, panting. "No, sir. I'm not your fiancee. You're drunk." She said, but regretted it instantly as his eyes darkened.

"Do I look drunk to you?" the stench of alcohol was stronger in his breath. He suddenly grabbed her face with one hand and held it so tightly between his fingers. "You will do what I say with no complaints, alright?"

"But sir-" She tried to protest, but he only squeezed further.

"Am I clear?" He thundered.

Lena nodded quickly in fear, then suddenly, he spun her around so she was facing the bed and he stood behind her. She could already feel him harden beneath and she knew there was no escaping.

'This is wrong.' her head whispered, but her body said otherwise as it trembled and gave in to the pleasure as soon as she felt him undo her zipper and his lips began planting kisses from her neck to her shoulders.

Her clothes dropped to the floor, and she guided his hands to her clitoral area, then willingly arched when he was ready to slide in.

That night served as the first time Lena ever enjoyed sex.

Lena clutched her aching neck, her hair a tangled mess as a throbbing headache set in. Her heart pounded in her chest the longer it took for the newcomer to climb up the stairs. She sat curled up on the bed as Cecil shot her that creepy, victorious smile with her arms folded. It wasn't the same for Chad though, as there was something else on his face-regret? Fear? Pity?Lena couldn't place it. All she knew was whoever was climbing up those stairs sounded like bad news."Glad you could join us," Cecil greeted as the person closed in."Who made such a mess?" The man asked with obvious irritation as Cecil took an annoyed glance at Chad.Lena's heart sank just as she heard it shatter all over again."Where is she?" the man finally asked, and Chad kicked open the door wider.Lena's eyes widened as she met the man's gaze-not from surprise, but from realization.Adrian.Her vision blurred slightly as she blinked, trying to make sense of what she was seeing. Adrian took slow, steady steps to

It felt like his eyelids were being pressed down by heavy, unseen forces as they felt so heavy up open. But finally, with so much effort, he saw faint light, and even the faint light made him wince. 'Fuck!' he thought as a sharp pain tore through his body, forcing him to shut his eyes again. 'Don't be such a pussy. It's just a little pain,' his mind scolded as the motion he was feeling suddenly stopped. His eyes shot open again, and he was staring at the gray ceiling of his car.'Now where were we?... Lena.' Thane hurriedly sat up, holding his head as it throbbed painfully."You're up." Dante's voice came from the front seat, staring at him through the rearview mirror.Thane kept his head straight, his eyes on the empty road. "Where are we?" He asked carefully, so he didn't make too much face movement.Dante's eyes dropped to the device on his laps. "You were out cold. If you care to know." He informed, tapping away on the screen.Thane's fingers moved to his neck. His body tempera

"Call me whenever." Adrian's voice echoed in Lena's head. She swallowed hard, blinking multiple times as her mind raced.'You didn't call him when Mira, your stepsister, gave birth.''She's not her stepsister.' 'Doesn't matter!' the voice argued back. 'He'd given you his number to call him and you never did when you should have. And now you're stuck in here like Rapunzel and you want him to come save you? That's selfish, fool.'Lena's heartbeat sped up, matching the ticking clock in her head. Her fingers shook.Adrian was her only hope right now, because no other number was stored in her memory.'He did say I could call him if I needed someone, right?' she thought, biting her lower lip.Fuck it!She hurriedly rehearsed the numbers the way she'd read it on the card, then typed it on the phone and hit dial."I found the keys, Lena! I'm going to fucking tie you up. Let's see how much you can run your fucking-shit!!" Chad suddenly yelled along with painful groaning. The phone was ringing

Lena frantically searched her body for her phone, her hands running over her clothes, but it was gone. They'd obviously taken it out. "No, no, no," Lena muttered as tears dropped from her eyes, the fact that she was doomed dawning on her.She sank onto the bed, staring at the door and thinking of how her situation could get worse. This was everything Thane had tried to prevent, but she'd foolishly walked right out of his protection. 'Idiot!'Suddenly she paused, a sudden rush of strength coursing through her.She rushed to the door and began pounding on it. "Who is out there? Let me out!" She yelled and banged with all the strength in her, the sound bouncing on the walls and echoing around the small room."Cecil!" she yelled, accompanied by more banging and rattling of the doorknob, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Let me out of here!" She could feel her strength leaving her with each word.Cecil had clearly sedated her, then drove her to this building to lock her up.'What does she

A frown formed on Lena's face first, then shifted slightly before she finally forced her eyes open, a gasp escaping her lips. She sat up on the bed immediately, but she suddenly felt dizzy and shut her eyes again, her hand moving up to them to rub the fog out."What happened?" She muttered to herself and leaned backwards, aiming to place her head on the bed's headrest. But her head met a hard surface. Her eyes shut open immediately, the fog suddenly clearing. "What?" She turned around, confusion turning into alarm. There was no headrest-just a cold, hard wall behind her.Her eyes darted back to the room to take in her surroundings.A wardrobe. Two doors. A small table with a tray holding a glass of water. Thick curtains covering one side of the room.It was a room alright, but... "This isn't Thane's room." She said out loud, panic setting in her chest.Instinctively, she got out of the bed, slipping into her footwear, which lay scattered on the ground beside the bed. With her heart s

A light knock on the door echoed through the large office, but Thane ignored it, his eyes shifting from one part of his laptop to another, trying to occupy his mind with work, so he didn't think of his shitty family."Sir." Dante called as he got to his desk and pulled out a chair in which he settled himself.Thane didn't raise his head. "Any progress?" Dante hesitated and watched his boss type away on his computer, his brows furrowed like he was pissed at something. But Dante knew. What he knew was things were getting out of hand with Tessa's case, and then the files Victoria had hidden, which Thane's family would stop at nothing to find. The entire thing was obviously weighing down on him more than Dante expected. What he didn't know was why Thane was so bent on exempting himself from the entire heiress issue and then preventing Lena from knowing her mom was an heiress and also not wanting to get her involved at all. What he didn't know was why Thane was so bent on keeping himsel

"You really don't remember anything?" Alex asked with wide eyes as she lazily folded the bedsheet in her hands.Lena, on the other hand, sat on the bed, clutching a throw pillow, her mind racing. She was desperately trying to recall even the faintest memory of Cecil, but there was nothing.Ever since Thane had told her about her mother and Cecil, doubt had been creeping into her mind. If Cecil and her mom were really close, shouldn't she at least remember her?Sure, she had been only two when her mother died, but that was old enough to remember faces-right?"Honestly, I don't remember." Lena suddenly sighed as she shook herself out of her head, shutting her eyes briefly. "I barely even remember anything from my childhood." She said, partly frustrated."What about your dad?" Alex asked, picking up a mop. "Maybe you could ask him-" Lena suddenly put away the pillow like it was on fire, her eyes wide with realization."What is wrong with you?" A startled Alex asked, staring at her frien

"So you gave her the job just like that?" Lena asked, staring at Thane, who was now lying completely on the bed, his eyes fixed on the ceiling. His throat bobbed. "No." He said simply. "I don't let just anyone into my home. And honestly, her confidence was a little... off-putting at first. So I had to run some checks."Lena, who was laying beside him, just stared. With Alex's story and Bridget's story, everything made Thane sound like a savior.'Did he save every other maid in this house? That'll be eight more harassment and or trafficking cases.' Lena thought, her eyes making an outline of Thane's side view. She rolled to her side and supported her head with her hand so she didn't put too much weight on her stomach. "What did you find?" Thane hesitated. "She ran away from her family at a young age, and ever since, she'd been hopping around trying to find her feet." "Oh, my God." Lena exclaimed softly, genuinely feeling sorry for Bridget. "But why?" "She wanted a different life aw

What was surprising about what Thane was looking at was how she could curl up that way with how much body she had-she wasn't fat or chubby, but undoubtedly curvy.Yet she was able to form a small figure. It was obvious she had crawled over to where after he'd hit his door.'But how? Was she pushed or thrown?''I think there are bigger issues than that, genius,' his mind said, bringing him back to the fact that there was a woman sobbing in the hallway. He sighed again, making a mental note that he might probably regret this, but it was best to be a gentleman. Finally, he walked out of the room completely and shut the door behind him, carefully walking towards the figure quivering on the ground. "Are you okay?" He asked, standing at a safe distance. As soon as she heard the voice, she sprang into a sitting position and backed away from him, her red, tear-filled eyes wide with fear.Thane quickly put up his hands. "Hey, hey. I'm not going to hurt you, alright?" She just stared at him,
