Lena's mouth was partly agape at Tessa's disheveled appearance. Her usual poise and glamour were replaced by a worn-out and exhausted look, which made Lena wonder what was going on with her.

"Who the fuck are you?" Tessa's voice rang again, laced with irritation, snapping Lena out of her shock.

"I...I work here." Lena managed to say, her voice barely above a whisper as she stared into Tessa's icy blue eyes, which were now more dull than it usually was on TV.

Lena couldn't help but notice that the designer she was wearing was stained and roughened, like she'd had a fight with someone.

'A fellow model, maybe?' Lena thought. But Tessa didn't look like a troublemaker.

Tessa's gaze lingered on Lena, and she took a step forward. "I've never seen you here before." Lena took a step back as something terrifying flashed in Tessa's eyes as she spoke. "Who let you in here?"

"I...I'm new. I was sent to clean up the mess here." She took another step back as Tessa came closer. "I didn't know i-"

"Lena?" The familiar male voice echoed in the room and Tessa swung around to view Thane, who they hadn't heard walk in, standing at the door.

The way Tessa and Thane stared at each other made Lena feel like a child caught in between her parents' argument, as tension engulfed the room.

"I knew it." Tessa finally said after what seemed like a staring competition, with Lena trembling in the corner.

Thane rolled his eyes. "You knew what, Tessa."

"You now employ your whores." Tessa spat.

Instead, Thane turned to Lena, and after taking in her features in his maids' outfit, his Adam's apple bobbed in his throat. "Get out." He ordered

Lena didn't hesitate. She was almost done with the cleaning anyway, so she picked up the equipment and fled the room then she heard the door lock behind her.

On her way down the dimly lit hallway, she bumped face first into someone and almost spilled the bucket of water in her hand.

"I am so sorry." She apologised in a small voice and was about to keep moving but was pulled back by a brawny arm.

"Be careful next time." Dante's low but deep voice echoed in her ears. "You don't hurry around the boss's halls, alright?"

Lena nodded quickly, hoping he saw her as her words were dried up in her throat.

He finally let her go and, ignoring what he'd said, she hurried towards the stairs which led to her room on the first floor.

"And Lena," Dante called, stopping her in her tracks. "You heard and saw nothing."

*****

Lena made her way down the hall, wondering why the floor's hallway was a little darker than the rest of the house. She clutched the feathery duster in one hand and a cleaning rag in the other, remembering what she'd seen in just a few days since she'd arrived there.

From Tessa's constant nagging at Thane to the way she glared at her each time she came to clean up their room. Even at that, Lena felt no atom of dislike for Tessa. Instead, she felt sorry for her as she strongly felt something was wrong somewhere.

As she approached the door of Thane's study, which was the last door in the hallway, she brushed away her thoughts and tried to focus on why she'd agreed to be a maid.

For the money.

She got to the thick black door and raised her fist to knock in case anyone was within. But before she could do that, the door gave way, and she was faced with Bridget, who shot her an unreadable look.

But that wasn't what bothered her, as just before Bridget passed by her, she noticed her eyes. They were well,...different. Or maybe it was the poor lighting in the hallway.

Lena brushed it off and proceeded into the study, where she was greeted with a cloud of smoke.

"Oh, I'm so sorry, sir. I didn't know you were here." Lena apologized, recognizing Thane's face in the table lamp. "I'll come back later since you're busy." She turned to go.

"Get back here." He ordered in a relaxed voice and took another puff.

Lena kept her head down and complied, suddenly realising that she hadn't had a conversation with him since he allowed her into his home as they'd acted like they'd never met before.

He suddenly rose from his sitting position, quenched his cigarette, and walked towards a shelf of books and picked one up, which he placed on the table and opened.

"Before you begin your work, I'd like to know something, Lena." He began, as flipping pages filled the silence. "Have you noticed any strange things around the house?"

Lena's heart skipped a beat. 'Lots!' but why was he asking? Was she now his surveillance camera? Or was it a trick question? Her mind raced.

She inspected her feet and summoned all the courage. "I...I haven't been here so long. I-"

"Look at me." His calmness was terrifying. It was like he was trying to coerce her into something.

Slowly, Lena rose her eyes to meet his piercing gaze. The abused, bully ex-convict face he used to have was now replaced by a cold, terrifying but hot billionaire.

"You were saying?" Thane asked.

"Your fiance, sir." She replied, before she could stop herself, then bit her inner cheek as if to punish herself.

Thane abruptly shut the book, sending a sharp echo across the room and straight into Lena's chest. His expression darkened and his gaze intensified. "What about her?"

"N...nothing." She stammered, her breathing getting a bit disturbed, but she just couldn't bring herself to stop talking. "It's just that, she doesn't...well, she doesn't seem okay."

Thane lifted his chin, his jaw clenching a little. "How so?"

"Don't you see what I'm talking about?" Lena asked, trying to not make it obvious that he was starting to sound dumb to her.

Thane circled around the table and stood a couple of feet from her without breaking their eye contact. He held his hands behind his back. "No Lena. Enlighten me because she seems perfectly fine to me."

Lena almost scoffed. "You call her looking like a ghost around the house, fine?"

"You seem to feel you know her so well."

Lena should have taken to the hint that this was a trap. Instead, she continued. "What I know is, as the woman you're planning to spend the rest of your life with. You should care about Miss Maddox's health a little more."

"Are you trying to educate me on how to run my household?" Anger was now visible in his voice and Lena, without hesitation, withdrew into her shell.

"No sir, I-"

"The fact that you're my personal maid does not give you the right to speak about shit you know nothing about."

"I was just-"

"Who do you work for, Lena?" He asked and Lena's eyes strayed to her feet again.

Suddenly, she felt his finger tuck loose strands of her black hair behind her ear, raising her face so that her eyes met his.

"Who do you work for?" He asked again, his voice a bit lower but still struck fear into her.

Lena shuddered at his touch but didn't dare to show that her boss's touch had just sent warm liquid into her panties. "You, sir."

"Good. And that means you'll do everything I tell you, alright?"

"Yes." she replied, barely above a whisper.

He suddenly let go of her and turned away. "Now leave my presence."

Lena's eyes darted between Thane and his mother. And no one needed to tell her that this was more than an argument.'Who is Thane talking about?' she thought, her small hands clutching the railings even tighter.'That fucking snitch. Look what he's done!' Cecil raged in her mind, as the sound of all her plans shattering echoed in her head.'Shit!'"What did that fool tell you?" She asked, trying to keep her voice steady.Thane raised an amused brow. "Fool? Okay." He said and almost laughed, his mom's anger tickling his nerves. "Well, your sweet little brother told me just enough to make me keep Lena away from you." Cecil fell silent. No soothsayer needed to tell her that her son knew more than she thought.Lena's heartbeat quickened, and though her neck began to hurt from straining, she wasn't leaving.'So this really is about me.' she thought to herself. Finally, Cecil sighed and shut her eyes briefly. And when she opened them, she walked over to where Thane stood."Look, I'll admit

"That was all he said?" a curious Alex asked, staring confusingly at Lena who was sitting on the bed with her arms wrapped around herself. It's been a day since they got back from that house and Thane hadn't let Lena out of the house. And he'd only let her get one visitor, which was Alex.Alex stared at her friend, who still looked a bit terrified and confused. "What do you think he meant by that?" "I don't know Alex." Lena said and shut her eyes, taking a deep breath to calm herself. "This is happening too fast." She muttered to herself, then suddenly paused, turning her gaze to Alex."What really happened here when we were gone?" Alex shrugged, stepping closer to Lena from where she stood. "Well, his mom showed up just a few minutes after you two left. She kept calling him, but he wouldn't pick up. Dante had to try and was able to speak with him, but not long enough to track him."Alex paused and sank into the bed beside Lena, her voice laced with concern. "Lena, we were worried

Lena never thought she could feel this scared coming back to Thane's house. As the gate slowly gave way for them to go in, she stole a quick glance at him, her heart pounding in her chest. He didn't turn to her. His eyes remained straight ahead, his face unreadable. But she knew-his mind was working, calculating. She glanced back at the gate, which had now fully opened as they began driving in, remembering how serious Thane was when he told her to stay away from his mom. Why?He hadn't told her-as usual.'Does it have anything to do with his attitude lately?' Lena asked herself as they closed the distance between them and the massive building. As if on cue, Dante emerged from the garden, his keen eyes watching the car roll in. And, as if communicating, Thane and Dante locked eyes and held the stare until Thane finally parked the car. Then he got out and left the engine running for another guard to go park it in the garage.Lena jumped out of the car, the tension in the air weighing

A low rumble in her stomach was what woke Lena up. She stretched and turned until she opened her eyes to the light from outside, reflecting through the grey curtains.Slowly, she sat up and moved the duvet away, suddenly realizing she hadn't ingested anything meaningful since the morning of the previous day."Thane?" She called softly, her eyes scanning the room, as she really didn't remember how she got under the duvet-or when she fell asleep. She rubbed her eyes and got out of the bed, making her way to the door. She reached for the handle and twisted it, Nothing. The fog in her eyes suddenly cleared as she frowned, turning the handle once more with more force. But it was hopeless."Thane!" she yelled, panic setting in her chest as she turned back to the room searching for anything he might have left to explain why he'd locked her in, or where he'd gone to.Nothing. Her stomach gurgled again, reminding her she was eating for two.She was going to satisfy that first before searchin

"We were going to stay here for a few days. Just to stay away from people," He said, his eyes roaming her face, searching for a reaction. But Lena just stood there transfixed to the spot, her heart racing with different emotions.'Don't get too excited, it was first for Tessa, not for you,' a voice argued.'But he brought me to it. That means something.' Lena argued back. 'Adrian never did anything like this before.' she thought, trying to push out her greedy thoughts as she lifted her eyes to Thane. Her lips curled into a small smile. "Thane-" "Ignore it." He interrupted quickly and began kicking the flowers out of the way. Lena's smile dropped and she almost screamed as she watched him scatter the petals every other place other than where it originally was."Tessa always thought it was too much, anyway." He said, making sure none was left in the way. Then he turned back to Lena, whose eyes seemed to be glued to the scattered petals. "That's not why we're here. Come with me." He s

Lena sat in the reception, staring at the ultrasound photo in her hands, still refusing to believe her eyes as motherhood dawned on her.The other patients seating at the reception stared at her-out of recognition and surprise. But Lena didn't care. They wouldn't understand.Unfortunately, they couldn't determine the gender yet. But even if they could, Lena really wasn't ready for that yet. She was going to let this one sink in first. Finally lifting her eyes, she spotted Thane walking out with the doctor, both of them discussing in hush tones with Thane's eyes flickering to where she sat from time to time. Then they finally shook hands, and Thane walked over to where she was.The doctor, still with her familiar glow, mouthed. "Bye, Lena." And gave a small wave. Lena smiled and waved back, just as Thane got to where she was and stretched out his hand for her to take.Lena blinked, confused. But then she slowly placed her hand in his and stood up.Then, just like that, with her han

Lena confirmed that all wasn't well with Thane with the way he'd driven her to the hospital. First hint was him-Thane, driving by himself. It was surprising. Thane never drove himself. Then, the drive to the hospital seemed longer than usual, meaning he wasn't taking her to the hospital she was used to.And the way a dark cloud hovered above his head as he guided the car around bends and drifts, it was concerning. She really wished she could read his mind. Now, Lena was sitting in the exam room waiting for the doctor to come in. Her eyes flicked to Thane whose head was buried in his phone, leaning against the wall beside where she sat, his frown never leaving for once.He seemed really uninterested with what was going on. But why then did he insist on coming with her-taking her himself?Lena's mind raced, as she held onto her knee and gently squeezed it. This was her first prenatal visit for as long as she could remember and she was terrified. She glanced around the room.At a corne

Lena still couldn't shake the awkward feeling from the kiss she and Dante had shared, even as it'd been two days ago.Like how would she have known he was talking about her? If she'd known, she'd never have pushed him to make a move and she'd have avoided the kiss. Her head was a mess as she paced back and forth in the room. Her arms wrapped around her body. She was feeling like she'd betrayed Thane.'But wait a minute. Dante had had a crush on me all this while? Weird. I didn't notice a thing.''But why? Did he really mean all those things he said about me?''Oh, stop it. Stop it. You're married to his boss. Don't let the look in his eyes put ideas in your head,' she argued in her head.'Besides, you don't actually feel anything towards him. You're indirectly his boss as well. And what should go on between you two should be strictly professional!' her mind screamed.Lena groaned, fighting her emotions as the needing look on Dante's face after he broke the kiss flashed in her mind.S

"Did she say anything when she was leaving?" Lena asked Alex, who had been trying to clean her room quietly for the past twenty minutes. But Lena had decided to be the chatty one today.Alex hesitated, as if trying to focus on sweeping. But then she paused and looked at Lena, who was sitting on the bed. "For the last time Lena, I and Bridget were never friends. How on earth do you expect her to speak to me when she was almost in tears as she dragged her suitcase out of the house?"Lena folded her arms and turned away at Alex's indirect scolding. Thane and Dante had been so busy these days that Thane barely slept or took a second glance at her. And despite the whispers about Mrs Maddox and her troubles, Lena couldn't shake off the feeling that some of Thane's stress had to do with Bridget.'That girl is such a bother.'She and Thane hadn't even been in the same bed since she-well, since she'd given him head."Why are you so worried about her, anyway? You should be happy she's gone.
