I couldn't help but laugh at the story. "I can't believe you almost killed my father."

"I didn't do it on purpose!" Mom protested.

I looked at Hunter, who was leaning back on the couch, grinning, probably reliving the memory of their first date. "You told me your first date was at an Italian restaurant," I accused him.

Hunter shrugged. "That was really our second date. I didn't want to tell you that story about our first date. Too embarrassing."

Mom rolled her eyes. "Who are you kidding? Our entire relationship was too embarrassing."

"You wound me with your lies, darling," Hunter pretended to sound hurt.

I stared at them in amazement. They didn't act like two people who hated each other. They were bantering like an old married couple.

I need to find a way to keep them together, I thought to myself.

I knew that if I didn't intervene, my mom would drive herself away from Hunter because she was too stubborn to admit she felt something for him.
