Dexter Lim had spent years telling himself that he hated Selena Richard.

It was easier that way.

Anger was simpler than heartbreak.

He had been twenty-three when she left. Young enough to believe love could last forever and naïve enough to think that if two people loved each other, nothing could tear them apart.

He had been wrong.

He remembered the night she disappeared.

He had waited outside her apartment for hours. He had called her phone repeatedly and knocked on the door until his hands hurt.

Nothing.

By morning, her apartment was empty.

She had taken almost everything.

Almost.

A photograph of them together had been left on the kitchen counter.

Dexter still had it seven years later.

He opened his desk drawer and stared at the photograph.

Selena was smiling in it, her hand resting on his arm. Dexter was looking at her as if she were the only person in the world.

He hated himself for keeping it.

He shut the drawer.

A knock sounded.

“Come in.”

His secretary stepped inside. “Sir, Ms. Richard has accepted the position.”

“I know.”

“She starts Monday.”

“I know.”

The secretary hesitated. “Is that going to be a problem?”

“No.”

It was a lie.

Everything about Selena was a problem.

Monday arrived too quickly.

Selena entered Lim Corporation at exactly eight o’clock.

Dexter noticed.

Of course he noticed.

She wore a simple navy blouse and black trousers. Her hair was pulled back neatly, and a tablet rested beneath one arm.

Professional.

Composed.

As if they had never shared anything.

“Good morning, Mr. Lim.”

“You’re early.”

“I like being prepared.”

“Good.”

He handed her a folder.

“Today’s schedule.”

She opened it. “Your nine o’clock has been pushed to ten. The board meeting is at two. You have lunch with Mr. Wilson at twelve-thirty.”

Dexter stared at her.

“You memorized all that?”

“I read the schedule.”

“Most assistants don’t bother.”

“Then maybe you hired the right one.”

He almost smiled.

Instead, he returned to his computer.

“Cancel lunch.”

Selena looked puzzled. “Why?”

“I don’t want it.”

“You confirmed it yesterday.”

“I changed my mind.”

She sighed.

Dexter looked up. “Did you just sigh at me?”

“No.”

“You did.”

“I was breathing.”

For a moment, the old Selena was back.

The woman who had always challenged him. The woman who had once laughed whenever he complained about being contradicted.

He pushed the memory away.

“There’s another meeting.”

“With whom?”

“Investors.”

“What time?”

“Four.”

“That’s not on the schedule.”

“It is now.”

She wrote it down.

“Anything else?”

“No.”

She turned to leave.

“Selena.”

She stopped. “Yes?”

“How old is your son?”

She froze.

“Why?”

“I’m making conversation.”

“You’re bad at it.”

Dexter raised an eyebrow.

“You haven’t changed.”

Neither have you.

The thought nearly escaped her lips.

“He’s six,” she said.

Dexter went still.

“Six?”

“Yes.”

“When was he born?”

Selena’s stomach clenched. “Why does that matter?”

“Because I asked.”

“That isn’t a good enough reason.”

Dexter sat back. “You seem defensive.”

“I don’t like personal questions at work.”

“Fine.”

She walked away.

But the number stayed in his mind.

Six.

Six years old.

Selena had vanished seven years ago.

He tried to convince himself that the dates meant nothing.

They could mean nothing.

Yet a question had appeared in his mind, one he did not want to ask.

Could Adrian be his son?

Over the following days, Dexter found himself watching Selena more closely.

She never complained about the workload. She arrived early, kept his schedule organized, and somehow remembered details he himself forgot.

She also avoided every personal question.

Especially questions about Adrian.

Dexter did not understand why that bothered him so much.

One afternoon, he heard her phone ring.

“Hello?”

Her expression changed.

“What happened?”

Dexter looked up.

“My son is sick?” she asked.

She stood immediately.

“Is he all right?”

She listened, then grabbed her bag.

“I’ll be right there.”

Dexter stood. “What’s wrong?”

“Adrian has a fever.”

“Do you need to go?”

“Yes.”

“Then go.”

She hesitated. “I’ll finish the reports tonight.”

“Don’t.”

“But—”

“Your son needs you.”

She nodded.

“Thank you.”

She hurried away.

Dexter stared at the closed door.

He told himself that he was only concerned because she was his employee.

Nothing more.

But the truth was that he could not stop thinking about the little boy named

Dexter could not get his mind off the envelope. Though he left Selena’s apartment, he could not get his mind off the faded paper which had his name on it. She had kept that letter for six years, carrying it through a life he knew almost nothing about. He found it difficult to sleep that night. By morning, his decision was made. He needed answers. Dexter drove to Selena’s apartment after work. When she opened the door, surprise crossed her face. “You came back.” “I need to talk to you.” Selena moved aside. Adrian was sitting on the living-room floor, stacking colorful blocks into a wobbling tower. The moment he spotted Dexter, his whole face lit up. "Daddy!" Dexter smiled before he could stop himself. "Hello, little man." Adrian scrambled to his feet and ran to him. "Are you staying?" "I can stay for a little while." "Good." Selena watched from across the room, quiet. Dexter dropped down onto the floor beside Adrian and joined the tower-building, and for a few minute

  • The Billionaire's Secret Heir    Chapter Six - Suspicion

The next morning, Dexter walked into Lim Corporation feeling restless. He had spent most of the night thinking about Adrian. His son. Even silently saying those words still felt strange. For six years, Dexter had lived without knowing that he had a child. Now that he had finally met Adrian, he wanted to know everything about him—his favorite things, his fears, his dreams, and every little detail that made him who he was. Most of all, he wanted to make up for the years he had missed. But another thought refused to leave his mind. Selena had hidden Adrian from him. That hurt more than he wanted to admit. And the more he thought about it, the more he suspected that Adrian wasn't the only secret Selena had kept from him. Dexter opened his laptop and began looking through old information about Selena's life after their separation. There were gaps. Too many gaps. His mind returned to the final months of their relationship. Selena had become distant and unusually guarded. At the

That evening, Selena returned to the office for some documents. She did not expect Dexter to still be there. The lights were dim.He stood beside the window, looking out over the city.“You’re here late,” he said.“So are you.”“I had work.”“So did I.”He turned.“Selena.”She stopped.“What?”“How old were you when Adrian was born?”Her heart sank.“Why?”“Just answer.”She looked at him.“Twenty-one.”Dexter’s expression changed.Twenty-one.The same age Selena had been when she disappeared. He stepped closer.“Who’s his father?”Selena’s voice dropped.“I told you. That’s personal.”“He’s my son, isn’t he?”The world seemed to stop.Selena could not breathe.Dexter stared at her.“Look at me.”She did.“Is Adrian my son?”Her eyes filled with tears. She wanted to deny it.She had rehearsed the lie a thousand times. But standing there, facing the man she had once loved, the words would not come.Dexter’s voice softened.“Selena.”She looked away. That was enough. He understood. His

Monday morning, Selena arrived at work tired. She had barely slept the night before. Every time she closed her eyes, thoughts of Adrian's illness, his fever, and the unexpected appearance of Dexter filled her mind. She had spent most of the night sitting beside her son's bed, checking on him whenever he stirred.Although Adrian was feeling better, Selena still carried the exhaustion in her eyes.Dexter noticed immediately.“You didn’t sleep.”Selena looked up from the files on her desk. “I’m fine.”“That’s not an answer.”She sighed. “My son is better.”“Good.”Dexter returned his attention to his computer, but a few seconds later, he looked up again.“Does he have a doctor?”“Yes.”“Good.”Selena studied him for a moment before giving him a faint smile.“Are you always this nosy?”“Only when I’m concerned.”The word hung between them.Concerned.Selena’s smile slowly disappeared. There was something different about Dexter lately. He had always been serious, demanding, and difficult t

  • The Billionaire's Secret Heir    Chapter Three - The New Assistant

By Friday, Selena had learned three things about Dexter Lim.First, he hated being late.Second, he hated pointless meetings.Third, he apparently survived on coffee and stubbornness. She placed a cup of black coffee on his desk.Dexter glanced at it.“I didn’t ask for coffee.”“You’ve been staring at that screen for three hours.”“And?”“You haven’t had anything to drink.”He looked up. “Are you keeping tabs on me?”“I’m your assistant.”“That doesn’t make you my mother.”“I know.”She returned to her desk.A few minutes later, she heard him take a sip.She smiled. The week had gone better than she expected. They had avoided the past, and Selena was grateful for that. But Dexter had become steadily more curious about Adrian. He asked where Adrian went to school, what he liked, who cared for him after school, and whether he had siblings.Selena gave him as little information as possible.Every question felt like a warning. One afternoon, her phone rang.It was Adrian’s school.“Hello?
