Selena Richard stood across the street from Lim Corporation and stared at the enormous glass building. Morning sunlight reflected from its silver walls, making the tower appear almost untouchable. People in expensive suits hurried through the revolving doors while black cars stopped along the curb.

Selena tightened her grip around the folder containing her résumé.

She had spent the last three years trying to build a quiet life. Quiet was what she needed. A steady job. A safe home. Enough money to pay rent, school fees, groceries, and everything else her son Adrian needed.

Nothing complicated.

Most importantly, nothing connected to the past.

Especially not Dexter Lim.

“Mommy?”

Selena looked down.

Adrian stood beside her with his little backpack hanging from one shoulder. His dark hair was slightly untidy, and his serious expression made Selena smile despite the nervous knot in her stomach.

“Do you think you will land the job?”

“I’m going to try.”

“Then you have to smile.”

Selena laughed softly. “Why?”

“Because you look scary when you’re worried.”

She knelt and adjusted his collar. “Is that so?”

“Very scary.”

She kissed his forehead. “Go inside with Mrs. Riley. I’ll meet you after school.”

“Okay.”

Adrian hurried toward the woman waiting near the small café entrance. Selena watched until he was safely with her before turning toward the building.

She could not fail today.

She walked into Lim Corporation and approached the receptionist.

“Good morning. How can I help you?”

“I’m here for an interview. Selena Richard.”

The receptionist checked her computer. “Executive assistant position?”

“Yes.”

“Twenty-third floor. The elevators are on your right.”

“Thank you.”

Selena entered the elevator. As the doors closed, her reflection appeared in the polished metal. She looked older than she had years ago. Stronger, too. She had learned how to survive without asking anyone for help.

The elevator stopped on the twenty-third floor.

A young woman behind the reception desk smiled. “Ms. Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Mr. Lim is waiting.”

Selena’s heart stopped.

Mr. Lim.

She swallowed.

Surely it could not be him.

The office doors opened.

Dexter Lim stood beside the enormous window overlooking the city. He wore a dark suit, his posture straight and controlled.

Then he turned.

Their eyes met.

For one impossible second, Selena forgot how to breathe.

Dexter’s expression changed from confusion to shock, then to something colder.

“Selena?”

Her name sounded like an accusation.

She forced herself to stand straight. “Mr. Lim.”

His jaw tightened. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“I didn’t know you’d be interviewing me.”

“Neither did I.”

Silence filled the office.

Dexter walked to his desk and picked up her résumé.

“Three years at Sterling Designs.”

“Yes.”

“Project coordination.”

“Yes.”

“Then two years freelancing.”

“Yes.”

He looked up. “What happened to your old career?”

Selena tightened her grip on her handbag. “Life got in the way.”

“That’s an interesting way to put it.”

“It’s the truthful one.”

His eyes remained on her.

“You vanished.”

“No,” she said quietly. “I left.”

“You vanished from my life without a word.”

Her throat tightened. “We’re here for a job interview.”

“I think some things deserve an explanation.”

“Not today.”

Dexter studied her for several seconds before looking back at her résumé.

“You’re qualified.”

Selena’s heart lifted slightly.

“But?”

“There’s always a but.” He closed the folder. “You’d be working directly under me.”

“I understand.”

“You’d have access to confidential information.”

“I understand.”

“The hours would be long.”

“I can manage.”

“And you’d have to put up with me.”

For the first time, Selena almost smiled. “I’ve survived that before.”

Something close to amusement appeared on Dexter’s face.

Then it disappeared.

“You start Monday.”

Selena blinked. “I’m sorry?”

“You’re hired.”

“Thank you.”

She rose and reached for her handbag.

“Selena.”

She stopped.

“What?”

“Is your husband aware you’re working here?”

“I’m not married, so I don’t have a husband.”

“Boyfriend?”

“No.”

Dexter’s gaze sharpened. “Then who’s the father?”

Selena froze.

She knew exactly what he meant.

Adrian.

“That’s none of your business.”

She walked out before he could say another word.

Inside the elevator, Selena leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. A tear slipped down her cheek, but she wiped it away and smiled.

She had returned to the city for one reason: to give Adrian a better life.

She had never imagined Dexter would become her boss.

And she certainly had not planned for him to discover the truth.

Not now.

Not ever.

  • The Billionaire's Secret Heir    Chapter Seven - The Letter

Dexter could not get his mind off the envelope. Though he left Selena’s apartment, he could not get his mind off the faded paper which had his name on it. She had kept that letter for six years, carrying it through a life he knew almost nothing about. He found it difficult to sleep that night. By morning, his decision was made. He needed answers. Dexter drove to Selena’s apartment after work. When she opened the door, surprise crossed her face. “You came back.” “I need to talk to you.” Selena moved aside. Adrian was sitting on the living-room floor, stacking colorful blocks into a wobbling tower. The moment he spotted Dexter, his whole face lit up. "Daddy!" Dexter smiled before he could stop himself. "Hello, little man." Adrian scrambled to his feet and ran to him. "Are you staying?" "I can stay for a little while." "Good." Selena watched from across the room, quiet. Dexter dropped down onto the floor beside Adrian and joined the tower-building, and for a few minute

  • The Billionaire's Secret Heir    Chapter Six - Suspicion

The next morning, Dexter walked into Lim Corporation feeling restless. He had spent most of the night thinking about Adrian. His son. Even silently saying those words still felt strange. For six years, Dexter had lived without knowing that he had a child. Now that he had finally met Adrian, he wanted to know everything about him—his favorite things, his fears, his dreams, and every little detail that made him who he was. Most of all, he wanted to make up for the years he had missed. But another thought refused to leave his mind. Selena had hidden Adrian from him. That hurt more than he wanted to admit. And the more he thought about it, the more he suspected that Adrian wasn't the only secret Selena had kept from him. Dexter opened his laptop and began looking through old information about Selena's life after their separation. There were gaps. Too many gaps. His mind returned to the final months of their relationship. Selena had become distant and unusually guarded. At the

That evening, Selena returned to the office for some documents. She did not expect Dexter to still be there. The lights were dim.He stood beside the window, looking out over the city.“You’re here late,” he said.“So are you.”“I had work.”“So did I.”He turned.“Selena.”She stopped.“What?”“How old were you when Adrian was born?”Her heart sank.“Why?”“Just answer.”She looked at him.“Twenty-one.”Dexter’s expression changed.Twenty-one.The same age Selena had been when she disappeared. He stepped closer.“Who’s his father?”Selena’s voice dropped.“I told you. That’s personal.”“He’s my son, isn’t he?”The world seemed to stop.Selena could not breathe.Dexter stared at her.“Look at me.”She did.“Is Adrian my son?”Her eyes filled with tears. She wanted to deny it.She had rehearsed the lie a thousand times. But standing there, facing the man she had once loved, the words would not come.Dexter’s voice softened.“Selena.”She looked away. That was enough. He understood. His

Monday morning, Selena arrived at work tired. She had barely slept the night before. Every time she closed her eyes, thoughts of Adrian's illness, his fever, and the unexpected appearance of Dexter filled her mind. She had spent most of the night sitting beside her son's bed, checking on him whenever he stirred.Although Adrian was feeling better, Selena still carried the exhaustion in her eyes.Dexter noticed immediately.“You didn’t sleep.”Selena looked up from the files on her desk. “I’m fine.”“That’s not an answer.”She sighed. “My son is better.”“Good.”Dexter returned his attention to his computer, but a few seconds later, he looked up again.“Does he have a doctor?”“Yes.”“Good.”Selena studied him for a moment before giving him a faint smile.“Are you always this nosy?”“Only when I’m concerned.”The word hung between them.Concerned.Selena’s smile slowly disappeared. There was something different about Dexter lately. He had always been serious, demanding, and difficult t

  • The Billionaire's Secret Heir    Chapter Three - The New Assistant

By Friday, Selena had learned three things about Dexter Lim.First, he hated being late.Second, he hated pointless meetings.Third, he apparently survived on coffee and stubbornness. She placed a cup of black coffee on his desk.Dexter glanced at it.“I didn’t ask for coffee.”“You’ve been staring at that screen for three hours.”“And?”“You haven’t had anything to drink.”He looked up. “Are you keeping tabs on me?”“I’m your assistant.”“That doesn’t make you my mother.”“I know.”She returned to her desk.A few minutes later, she heard him take a sip.She smiled. The week had gone better than she expected. They had avoided the past, and Selena was grateful for that. But Dexter had become steadily more curious about Adrian. He asked where Adrian went to school, what he liked, who cared for him after school, and whether he had siblings.Selena gave him as little information as possible.Every question felt like a warning. One afternoon, her phone rang.It was Adrian’s school.“Hello?

  • The Billionaire's Secret Heir    Chapter Two - The man she left behind

Dexter Lim had spent years telling himself that he hated Selena Richard. It was easier that way.Anger was simpler than heartbreak. He had been twenty-three when she left. Young enough to believe love could last forever and naïve enough to think that if two people loved each other, nothing could tear them apart. He had been wrong. He remembered the night she disappeared. He had waited outside her apartment for hours. He had called her phone repeatedly and knocked on the door until his hands hurt.Nothing.By morning, her apartment was empty. She had taken almost everything.Almost.A photograph of them together had been left on the kitchen counter.Dexter still had it seven years later. He opened his desk drawer and stared at the photograph.Selena was smiling in it, her hand resting on his arm. Dexter was looking at her as if she were the only person in the world. He hated himself for keeping it.He shut the drawer.A knock sounded.“Come in.”His secretary stepped inside. “Sir, Ms.
