Both knew they had to stop, but neither took the initiative to put the brakes on the situation. That only made matters worse by making them increasingly intense, akin to the unfathomable depth of the ocean. No comparison could have sufficed to translate what they were experiencing. Suddenly out of breath, she found herself straddling him, feeling with her whole being the pressing virility through his trousers, which nearly drove him to the brink of madness. Yet, he was holding back; he had to avoid at all costs causing a scandal.

It mattered little that there was a living soul in the vicinity; this place was nonetheless inappropriate for yielding to such forbidden acts.

It was a veritable miracle that he managed to stop the momentum and find the strength to say no to her. Although he subsequently had to subject himself to a cold shower to soothe himself by his own means. It was nonetheless the wisest decision; no matter how many times he had dreamed of taking her like that. Now that he could touch her, feel her, while they were on the verge of going all the way in his own bed, he had backed down. He felt partly foolish, but on the other hand, he knew it was the best thing to do. He had just avoided a colossal problem, to his mind.

After long minutes trying to catch their breath after this paroxysm, the young woman was seized with immense remorse, whereas he felt only an infinitesimal amount. Hope, for her part, would have liked to run away, bury her head in the ground, or see a giant chasm open up to swallow her whole. Incapable of looking him in the eyes, she felt defiled, akin to an easy girl. Not only was guilt gnawing at her—not only because he was older and was her friend's father, which constituted a sort of betrayal toward Alicia—but on top of all that, this added to the turmoil in the kitchen a few seconds earlier. It was certainly wise to return to her room, but not without offering apologies for this incident.

He was staring at her intensely, trembling as he returned to his seat, and witnessed the moment she hid her face in her hands, betraying the deep shame that flushed her cheeks. So, he reached out his hand to place it on her back, sketching slow caresses to soothe her. That was his sole objective, even if at that precise instant, nothing could erase what had just happened. The young girl continued to feel this imperious need to disappear, an oversized urgency beyond all measure. Never had she felt so bad.

And with good reason, such turmoil had been foreign to her until that kiss on the edge of the precipice that had upended everything.

In a way, he was returning the favor and could breathe deeply again, more convinced than ever that she was a true ally in the storm.

"Girls, dinner is served, I doubt you feel like missing the delicious meal we just prepared. You're going to lick your chops, it's so good," the housekeeper announced gently just as both of them straightened up with a start. Especially Hope, whose prospect of seeing her friend's father again plunged her into a state of extreme nervousness.

Just thinking that she was going to find herself beneath his deep gaze set her entire body aflutter. But she had to mask this turmoil, for Alicia would spot it immediately. Her friend had always possessed a formidable sixth sense with boys. Hope would never forget that time in middle school when Alicia had instantly guessed the attraction she felt for a classmate, even though Hope hadn't confided in her yet. That was why she had to redouble her vigilance if she didn't want Alicia to pierce the budding ambiguity between them. At least, that was what she presumed on her part, for she struggled to believe a man of Ashton's caliber could be interested in someone like her.

She allowed herself to be guided toward the immense dining room, a vast and modern space she remembered visiting on several occasions. Despite that, she felt profoundly foreign to it, and even more so under the imposing stature of the man presiding at the end of the table. He invited them to sit down again to begin the meal. Hope took a seat three chairs away from him, but the distance felt derisory; even a kilometer wouldn't have sufficed to restore her ease.

She could only focus on the exquisite preparation, though her appetite had deserted her. The desire to eat had vanished the moment she sat down there. Incapable of swallowing a single bite without trembling in every limb, she nevertheless forced herself to put on a good face, picking up the appropriate fork and knife to cut a piece of juicy meat. She tasted it slowly, and as if by magic, hunger returned. Fortunately, this inhibition had dissipated, and she could eat more serenely. Meanwhile, her friend Alicia wouldn't stop uttering delighted exclamations about the cooking, going so far as to ask her opinion on the dish. Hope settled for nodding with a sign of her head, all the while feeling the intense gaze of her friend's father planted on her.

"Yes, I like it a lot, thank you," she replied.

"It's a pleasure that you like it. Here, we also accept suggestions; it's not just home cooking," he chimed in, rewarding her with a falsely benevolent smile. At least, that was how she had interpreted it, or what was left of it if she hadn't kept his predatory gaze in memory.

"Yes, there are evenings when we order takeout, whether it's Chinese or anything else that crosses our minds. In truth, you can suggest whatever you prefer. Though, I know it already perfectly, I know you're crazy about Italian food, don't go denying it, huh?" he launched, while she sketched a timid smile, tilting her head slightly.

Ashton observed them both, and particularly Hope, who had shown herself rather reserved. Should he be more discreet in his glances? Was she afraid of him or something close to it? Perhaps it was something else.

Special? The word carried far too much weight; in fact, it could almost be considered a synonym for the man himself. Yet she hadn't the faintest clue what Ashton was up to."I guess I'll just have to stay in the dark, since you won't give me a single hint.""I think you know. You just need to think a little harder.""I'm doing my absolute best and coming up blank."He kissed her lips once more before pulling away to finish fixing his hair. He wasn't going to budge. As soon as they were ready, they got into the car and set off, utterly unaware that the worst was about to happen.Alicia dropped her phone to the floor upon hearing the news. She hated that something like this was happening and nearly passed out right then and there. Salvatore rushed to her side to steady her."Dad and Hope, they... No, no, no!"Salvatore picked up the phone for her, seeing that she was too choked up to speak."Hello? Can you explain to me what's going on?""Sir, I'm the doctor from..."The voice on the ot

They had plans to go to a restaurant that evening, and Ashton had a surprise in store that the young woman couldn't even begin to imagine; she didn't have the slightest suspicion. Meanwhile, once she found herself in the room she used to occupy back when their relationship was still a clandestine affair, she rummaged through the bedside table for some cash she kept there and decided to run to a pharmacy. She filled Alicia in right away to avoid any more surprises.True to form, her friend went with her to buy the test and stayed by her side, waiting out the agonizing five minutes for the result."Oh my god! Months ago I told you to put yourself in my shoes, and now I think you literally did. If you turn out to be pregnant, I am going to scream so loud. That would be wonderful news—both of us expecting a baby!" Alicia smiled."I'm nervous. What if this isn't what your dad wants? God! He's already been through this with you. Do you think he'd want to go through it all over again?""Dad

Time slipped away faster and faster, and Alicia’s belly grew. She looked more radiant and beautiful with each passing day. By now, she and Salvatore had moved into a luxurious apartment in New York City. Even so, the interior offered an unmatched sense of comfort, making it feel worlds away from the suburbs. Everything was calm—the exact kind of calm she needed. That Thursday night, Hope surrendered herself in body and soul to her man, the one she loved.Ashton always knew how to touch every inch of her skin, tracing passion across the contours of her perfect physique. When the act of lovemaking ended, they lay entwined side by side. Then, the young woman drifted off into a thought that kept echoing through her mind. She had been feeling a bit strange lately, and she was terrified that the inevitable might be happening. She always remembered that he practiced safe sex, and she had even started taking the pill. But there was always that tiny chance, just as it had happened to Alicia."

While they debated when to do it, they were fully experiencing Alicia's journey as she prepared in advance for her baby's arrival. Sure, it was still a few months before she gave birth, but she had decided to hurry and get everything her little one would need. They didn't know yet if it would be a boy or a girl, though she had no preference. Salvatore was dead set that it would be a little princess—or maybe those were just his own wishes for a girl. However, he also made it clear a boy would be welcomed with the exact same love."Ashton, what do you think you're doing?" she scolded him playfully. She was washing dishes when he appeared behind her, wrapped his arms around her, and kissed her neck, making her giggle."Don't worry. I just want to feel my woman. Can't I do that?""Not here in the kitchen.""I don't care.""I don't want anyone to see us. If you don't care, I do."Sighing, he kissed her shoulder before releasing her and stepping beside her to watch what she was doing."Are

Alicia decided to invite Salvatore over to the mansion as evening fell and he was free. Hope insisted on leaving them alone, but Alicia earnestly asked her to stay in the living room with them. That way, the young woman witnessed when Alicia told the truth to her partner about her pregnancy."So we're going to have a child, Salvatore. Please hug me, tell me everything is going to be okay," she asked him, taking the initiative herself to step into his arms, and the man embraced her."My love, of course it's going to be okay. I want to stand by you through this process, and you're making me the happiest man alive with this news."She had already told Salvatore; now only her father was missing, who hadn't returned from work yet."I know you're nervous, but trust that everything will turn out fine.""Right, it's not that easy.""I know," he sighed. The two of them were sitting at the dining table when Ashton suddenly arrived. "Of course, sir. I can take care of accompanying her myself.""I appreciate it so much. Please keep me updated on everything. If anything comes up, contact me."When she finished talking to her boss, she walked over to the young woman lying down."Your father says we need to take you to a doctor, and that's the most sensible thing in these cases.""I don't think it's necessary. It was just a faint and nothing more.""I don't agree with you, Alicia. Carolina and your father are completely right. The best thing is for you to see a doctor so you can get a diagnosis.""I'm not a kid anymore. I know you guys have good intentions, but I don't see how it was anything major. Look, I feel fine now," she huffed, crossing her arms in a fit of annoyance."Well, I'm just telling you what your father just informed me.""He's always been way too overprotective of me and you guys know it," she rolled her eyes, and Hope studied her friend's behavior, noting that bad humor had suddenly surrounded her.
