Amelia's POV

The partnership was official.

Three people bound by one goal: destroy Ethan Ward.

As we left the restaurant that night, Alexander's hand rested on the small of my back. The gesture felt different now. Less like a performance for the cameras and more like... protection.

Adrian walked us to the valet, his hands in his pockets, his expression unreadable.

"I'll send over the revised contracts tomorrow," he said. "With Sterling Group backing us, we can move faster than I thought."

"How fast?" I asked.

"Two weeks. Maybe less." His green eyes found mine. "Can you be ready?"

My mind raced through everything that would require. Designs, production, marketing. It was ambitious. Almost reckless.

But I nodded. "Yes."

Adrian smiled faintly. "That's what I thought you'd say."

He looked at Alexander then, something passing between them. Not quite trust, but a mutual understanding.

"Take care of her," Adrian said quietly.

Alexander's jaw tightened. "I always do."

As Adrian's car pulled away, I turned to Alexander. "You don't like him."

"I don't trust him," he corrected, guiding me toward our limousine. "There's a difference."

"He's been nothing but helpful."

"For now." Alexander opened the car door for me. "But men like Blake always want something in return."

I slid into the back seat. "And what about men like you? What do you want?"

He settled beside me, the privacy screen already up. For a moment, he didn't answer. Just looked at me with those gray eyes that seemed to see everything.

"I want to see you win," he said finally. "Is that so hard to believe?"

Yes, I almost said. Because everyone who's ever helped me has wanted something.

But I kept quiet.

The city lights blurred past the tinted windows as we drove home. Home. Funny how the Sterling mansion was starting to feel less like a prison and more like... something else.

"Tomorrow morning," Alexander said, breaking the silence. "My legal team will finalize the contracts with Blake. By afternoon, we'll have the funding transferred to your company account."

"My company?"

"Lia Hart Designs is yours, Amelia. Not mine. Not Blake's." His voice was firm. "I'm simply providing resources. The empire you build belongs to you."

Something warm flickered in my chest. "Thank you."

He nodded once, looking away. "Don't thank me yet. We haven't won anything."

"But we will."

His lips curved slightly. "Yes. We will."

The next morning, I woke to find Alexander already gone.

A note sat on my nightstand in his sharp handwriting:

“Meeting with legal team. Make yourself at home in my study. You'll need the space. The password is your birthday. - A”

My birthday. He remembered.

I dressed quickly and made my way to his study. The room that had always been locked, always forbidden, was now open to me.

It felt significant somehow.

Inside, the morning light poured through floor to ceiling windows. The city stretched out below like a kingdom waiting to be claimed.

I set up my laptop on his massive desk and got to work.

For hours, I sketched and planned. New designs. Marketing strategies. Production timelines. Everything had to be perfect.

Around noon, Mrs. Cole brought me tea and sandwiches.

"Mr. Sterling called," she said, setting the tray down. "He said to remind you to eat."

I looked up, surprised. "He called about that?"

She smiled softly. "He's been different lately. Lighter, if that makes sense."

It did. Because I felt it too.

After she left, I pulled up the financial reports Alexander had given me about Ward & Co. The numbers were worse than I thought. Ethan's company was bleeding money.

Three failed campaigns in six months. Client contracts being dropped. Internal disputes between departments.

They were already falling apart. We just needed to push them over the edge.

My phone buzzed. A text from Adrian.

*Contracts signed. Money's moving. You're officially a CEO, Lia. Congratulations.*

I stared at the message, letting it sink in.

CEO. Of my own company. Built on my own terms.

A year ago, I was nobody. Fired, humiliated, erased.

Now, I was becoming everything they said I couldn't be.

I was typing a response when another text came through.

Unknown number.

My thumb hovered over it before I opened it.

“I know who you are.”

My blood turned cold.

“And I know what you're planning. Back off now, or everyone will know the truth about Lia Hart. - V”

Vanessa.

My hands shook as I read it again.

She knew. Somehow, she knew.

But how? I'd been so careful. No public appearances. No photos. Everything through Adrian and now Alexander.

Unless...

My mind raced through possibilities. A leak in Adrian's team? Someone at Sterling Group?

Or had I gotten careless?

I was still staring at my phone when the study door opened.

Alexander walked in, tie loosened, looking tired but alert. His eyes found mine immediately.

"What's wrong?"

I couldn't speak. Just handed him my phone.

He read the message, his expression darkening with each word.

"When did this come?"

"Just now."

He pulled out his own phone, fingers moving rapidly. "I'm tracing the number. Give me a minute."

While he worked, I paced the room. My heart wouldn't stop racing.

Everything I'd built. Everything I'd planned. One message could destroy it all.

If Vanessa exposed me now, before I was ready, I'd lose my advantage. The mystery of Lia Hart was half the power.

"The number's a burner phone," Alexander said finally, his voice tight. "Untraceable. But the message was sent from downtown. Near Ward & Co.'s headquarters."

"So it is her."

"Likely." He looked at me. "The question is, how much does she actually know?"

I thought about it. "If she knew everything, she wouldn't threaten. She'd just expose me."

"Exactly." Alexander moved closer. "She's fishing. Trying to scare you into revealing yourself."

"It's working," I admitted.

His hand came to rest on my shoulder. Warm. Steady. "Then we call her bluff."

"How?"

"By doing nothing." His gray eyes were sharp. "If you react, you confirm her suspicions. If you stay quiet, she'll doubt herself."

"And if she exposes me anyway?"

"Then we'll deal with it." His voice was calm, certain. "But I don't think she will. Vanessa Hayes is smart. She won't make a move without proof."

I wanted to believe him. But fear had its claws in me now.

"Amelia." He tilted my chin up gently, forcing me to meet his eyes. "Listen to me. You are not the same woman Ethan destroyed. You're stronger now. Smarter. And you're not alone."

The last words hit differently.

Not alone.

For so long, I'd been fighting by myself. Hiding. Running. Rebuilding in shadows.

But now...

"Okay," I said quietly. "We ignore it."

"Good." He let go of my chin but didn't step back. "Now, let's talk about your launch."

For the next hour, we strategized.

Alexander suggested hosting a private showcase. Invite only the most influential people in the industry. Create buzz without revealing Lia Hart's face.

"Let them wonder," he said. "Mystery is power."

"And when Ethan and Vanessa show up?"

"They won't." He pulled up something on his laptop. "Because they won't be invited. And even if they try to crash, my security will handle it."

I looked at the guest list he was building. Fashion editors. Magazine publishers. Celebrity stylists. High profile investors.

Everyone who mattered.

"This is going to cost a fortune," I said.

"Consider it an investment." He leaned back. "When Lia Hart Designs launches, it needs to be unforgettable. The kind of event people talk about for months."

"And what about me? I can't exactly show my face."

He smiled. "You won't have to. You'll remain behind the scenes. Let your designs speak for themselves."

It was perfect. Almost too perfect.

"Why are you doing this?" I asked suddenly. "Really?"

Alexander was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Because I spent five years being powerless while Ethan Ward built an empire on stolen foundations. Watching him succeed with what he took from people I..." He paused. "People I cared about."

"Isabelle."

"Yes." His voice softened. "I couldn't save her from him. I couldn't stop what he did. But I can stop him from doing it again."

"This isn't just about revenge for you," I realized. "It's about justice."

"Isn't that the same thing?"

"No." I moved closer to him. "Revenge is about making yourself feel better. Justice is about making things right."

He looked at me for a long moment. "Then I suppose we're seeking both."

My phone buzzed again.

Another text. Same unknown number.

“Tick tock, Amelia. Time's running out.”

Alexander read it over my shoulder. "She's getting desperate."

"Good," I said, surprising myself with how cold I sounded. "Let her be scared for once."

He smiled then. "There she is."

"Who?"

"The woman with teeth."

That night, I couldn't sleep again.

But this time, it wasn't from fear. It was from energy. Purpose.

I kept thinking about the showcase. About finally stepping back into the world that had rejected me.

About facing Ethan and Vanessa as an equal. No, as their superior.

Around midnight, I gave up on sleep and went downstairs.

The library was dark except for a single lamp in the corner.

And there, sitting in a leather chair with a glass of whiskey, was Alexander.

"Can't sleep either?" I asked.

He looked up. "Too much on my mind."

I sat in the chair across from him. "Want to talk about it?"

"Not particularly." But he poured me a glass anyway.

We sat in comfortable silence for a while. Just two insomniacs sharing space.

Finally, Alexander spoke. "I've been thinking about what you said earlier. About justice versus revenge."

"And?"

"You're right." He swirled his drink. "I've spent so long hating Ethan that I forgot what I was really fighting for."

"What were you fighting for?"

He looked at me. "To prove that people like him don't win forever. That eventually, the truth comes out and they pay for what they've done."

"That's what I want too," I said quietly.

"I know." He set down his glass. "That's why we'll win."

The certainty in his voice steadied something in me.

"Alexander?" I said after a moment.

"Yes?"

"Thank you. For believing in me."

He was quiet. Then, so softly I almost missed it, he said, "It's not hard to believe in someone extraordinary."

My breath caught.

Before I could respond, his phone rang. He glanced at it, frowning.

"Security," he muttered, answering it. "What is it?"

I watched his expression change. Harden.

"When?" A pause. "I'll be right there."

He stood abruptly. "There's been a break in at the Sterling Group building. Someone tried to access my private server."

My stomach dropped. "Ethan?"

"Most likely." He was already moving toward the door. "Stay here. Lock the doors. I'll call you when I know more."

"Alexander, wait..."

But he was already gone.

I sat alone in the dark library, my mind racing.

A break in. The threatening texts. Vanessa's accusations.

They knew we were planning something. And now they were fighting back.

My phone buzzed.

Another text. Unknown number.

But this time, it wasn't words.

It was a photo. Of me. Leaving Adrian's office building three days ago.

And beneath it, one line: “I warned you.”
