Amelia's POV

I stared at the photo on my phone until my eyes burned.

It was me. Clear as day. Leaving Adrian's office building three days ago.

Someone had been watching. Waiting. Following.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

I tried calling Alexander again. Straight to voicemail. He was still dealing with the security breach at Sterling Group.

I was alone.

My phone rang. Unknown number.

I almost didn't answer.

"Hello?"

"Did you get my gift?" Vanessa's voice was sickeningly sweet. "That's a lovely coat, by the way."

My stomach turned. "What do you want?"

"I want you to stop. Whatever you're planning with Adrian Blake and your precious husband, stop now."

"Or what?"

"Or I send this photo to every fashion magazine, every blog, every news outlet in the city. With a very interesting story about Mrs. Sterling's secret business venture."

My jaw clenched. "You have no proof I'm Lia Hart."

"Don't I?" She laughed. "You're photographed leaving Lia Hart's primary investor's office. Wearing clothes from Lia Hart's upcoming collection. Really, Amelia, you weren't as careful as you thought."

I looked down. The blouse I was wearing. It was one of my new designs.

Stupid. So stupid.

"What do you want?" I asked again.

"Shut down Lia Hart Designs. Quietly. Completely." Her voice was cold now. "Do that, and this photo stays private."

"And if I don't?"

"Then I destroy you. Again." She hung up.

I sat in the dark library, my heart pounding.

Everything I'd built. Months of work. All of it hanging by a thread because of one photograph.

When Alexander finally came home at two in the morning, I was still awake.

He found me in his study with all the lights off.

"Amelia?" He flipped on a lamp. "What are you doing in the dark?"

I held up my phone. "Vanessa called."

His expression changed instantly. "What did she say?"

"That she'll expose me if I don't shut down Lia Hart Designs. She has proof, Alexander. Real proof."

He took the phone from my hand, studying the photo.

"This was taken from the Sterling Building," he said after a moment.

I blinked. "What?"

"The angle. The height. It's from across the street. From inside my company." His jaw clenched. "Someone inside Sterling Group took this photo."

The words hit me like ice water.

A leak. Inside his company.

"The security breach was bigger than I thought," he said. "They've been watching us. Watching you."

"Alexander, she wants me to shut everything down."

"No." His voice was hard, final.

"But if she exposes me now..."

"Then we move faster." He looked at me. "We don't retreat, Amelia. We attack."

"How?"

He pulled up something on his laptop. "Look at this."

I moved closer. The screen showed financial records, emails, legal documents.

"What is this?"

"Everything Adrian found on Ethan's illegal activities. Money laundering. Fraud. Tax evasion." He scrolled through pages. "And look at this name."

My breath caught.

Vanessa Hayes. Listed as an authorized signatory on multiple offshore accounts.

"She's his accomplice," Alexander said. "She's been helping him hide money for years. If she exposes you, we expose her."

"Mutually assured destruction."

"Exactly. But there's another option." He turned to face me fully. "We launch now. This week. Before she can make her move."

My mind raced. "That's impossible. The collection isn't ready..."

"Doesn't matter. Vanessa thinks she has time. She's giving you a deadline, which means she's not ready to expose you yet either."

"Alexander..."

"You are not the same woman who let them destroy you before." He moved closer. "You're stronger now. And you have something she doesn't."

"What?"

"Me. And an entire empire backing you up."

I looked at him, really looked at him. This man who'd been a stranger a year ago.

He was risking everything for me.

"If we launch early," I said slowly, "we'll need everything ready in days."

"So we work fast."

"One week," I said finally.

His lips curved. "One week to change everything."

By seven the next morning, Alexander's conference room was full.

Adrian, Alexander's legal team, marketing director, production managers. Even Mrs. Cole insisted on coming.

Alexander explained the situation. The threat. The timeline.

When I finished talking about Vanessa's call, Adrian actually laughed.

"They think one photo is leverage?" He pulled out his phone. "I've had a private investigator watching them for months. I have hundreds of photos. Vanessa meeting with money launderers. Ethan bribing officials. Everything."

Alexander's smile was sharp. "So we have ammunition. But we need offense."

His marketing director, Patricia, spoke up. "What if we control the narrative? A teaser campaign. Build mystery. Then reveal you on our terms, not theirs."

"I like it," Adrian said.

"It's risky," Alexander countered.

"She won't release that photo yet," I said. "She's waiting for me to come crawling. She thinks I'll break."

"Will you?" Adrian asked quietly.

I met his eyes, then Alexander's. "No. Never again."

Alexander nodded. "Then we move forward. Patricia, start the campaign today. Adrian, accelerate production. Legal team, prepare for anything."

He looked at me. "And you focus on the final designs. Make them perfect."

"One week," he said to the room. "One week to launch Lia Hart Designs and destroy anyone who tries to stop us."

For the next three days, I barely slept.

Alexander worked alongside me, handling calls while I sketched, bringing food when I forgot to eat.

We fell into a rhythm. A partnership that felt natural.

On the third day, Patricia's teaser campaign launched.

Black and white images of my designs. Mysterious shots that showed everything and nothing.

The tagline: "She's been here all along. Lia Hart. Coming soon."

Within hours, it was trending.

On the fourth day, Vanessa made her move.

An email arrived with the photo and text overlaid: "IS MRS. STERLING HIDING A SECRET EMPIRE? This story publishes in 48 hours. Last chance."

I showed Alexander immediately.

He picked up his phone. "Patricia? Release the identity reveal. Tonight."

"Tonight?" I gasped. "But we're not ready!"

"We don't have a choice." He looked at me. "Vanessa moved up our timeline. So we move faster."

"The collection isn't finished..."

"It doesn't need to be finished. It needs to be perfect enough." He pulled up a calendar. "The showcase is in three days. But tonight, we announce who Lia Hart really is."

My pulse raced. "How?"

"A video. Simple, elegant, honest. You, talking about your journey."

"I don't know what to say..."

"Yes, you do. You tell the truth."

One hour later, I sat in front of a camera, wearing one of my own designs.

Patricia counted down. "Three, two, one..."

I took a breath.

"My name is Amelia Sterling. But for the past few months, you've known me as Lia Hart..."

I talked about betrayal. About stolen dreams. About being erased and blamed and destroyed.

I talked about rising again. About choosing to build instead of staying broken.

When I finished, Patricia whispered, "That was perfect."

The video went live at eight PM.

By nine, it had ten million views.

By midnight, the fashion world was on fire.

I'd controlled the narrative. Told my story my way.

Vanessa's leverage was gone.

Around one in the morning, my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

"You think you're clever," Vanessa hissed. "But this isn't over."

"Yes," I said calmly. "It is. You had one card and I played it better."

"Ethan is going to destroy you."

"Let him try. Because this time, I'm not alone. This time, I'm ready. And this time, I'm going to win."

I hung up.

Alexander was watching me from across the room.

"Feel good?" he asked.

I thought about the fear that had controlled me for so long.

It was lighter now. Almost gone.

"Yeah," I said. "It does."

"Good." He stood, pulling on his jacket. "Because now comes the hard part."

"What's that?"

His smile was sharp and dangerous. "Making them pay."

Amelia's POV The briefing was at nine.Whitmore's team had the hotel identified, a property in Marylebone, central enough to be unremarkable for a business meeting and close enough to Rodriguez's London operation to make the perimeter setup practical. Rodriguez had walked the space the previous evening and confirmed the sight lines and the entry points and the communication monitoring infrastructure. She presented it clearly and thoroughly and when she finished the room was quiet for a moment. Then Alexander said: "Find another way."Rodriguez looked at him."The Zurich timeline is four to seven days," she said. "We have used two of them on the warrant processing. Vane's legal team is active and moving assets. Each day we lose is operational capacity for him to complicate the case before trial." She paused. "This is the other way. There isn't a further other way.""There's always a further other way," Alexander said."Not one that produces Vane in a position where the Swiss authoriti

  • The Billionaire's Substitute Bride   Chapter 93: The Trap

Amelia's POVWhitmore called at six the following evening. The warrants had been issued. Rodriguez's team had moved on Nathan at three PM, a quiet arrest at his flat in Marylebone, no resistance. The Zurich authorities had confirmed Vane was in their jurisdiction and the international warrant was being processed.Processing, Whitmore said, did not mean immediate. The Zurich cooperation was real but procedurally careful. Vane had significant legal resources in Switzerland and his team had already filed a response to the warrant request. The processing timeline was now estimated at four to seven days rather than the hours Rodriguez had anticipated.Four to seven days.During which Vane was in Zurich, aware that Nathan had been arrested, aware that the warrant existed, and operating with full access to whatever contingency measures he had built into his network for exactly this scenario."He'll move assets," Whitmore said. "Financial structures, communication channels, operational contac

Amelia's POV Alexander got into the car at twelve forty-seven.He sat beside me and closed the door and Rodriguez said nothing and Victor pulled away from the curb and we drove for two blocks before anyone spoke."You heard it," he said."Yes," I said.He looked straight ahead.I looked at him. At the set of his jaw and the quality of his hands in his lap, loose but deliberate, the hands of a man who had decided before walking into that pub what he was going to do regardless of what was said inside it and was now in the process of the decision becoming real."Are you alright?" I said.He was quiet for a moment."He believed what he said," he said. "About not knowing what Vane intended for Elena. I could hear it." He paused. "That doesn't change what he did afterward. But I could hear that the specific thing was true.""Yes," I said. "I could hear it too.""He's been carrying that for three years," he said. "Knowing about Elena afterward and staying inside it and carrying it." He look

Amelia's POV The meeting was at noon the next day.Whitmore had the night. He used it the way he used everything, methodically and without waste, and by eight the following morning he called Alexander and said the financial documentation was complete and court-ready and that the case against Nathan Sterling was buildable independent of anything Nathan said or did not say in the next twenty-four hours."The wire is insurance," Whitmore said. "Not necessity. Whatever he tells you today adds to what we have. It does not determine it.""I understand," Alexander said."If he says something significant," Whitmore said, "let him finish. Don't react. Don't confirm or deny what you know. Just let him talk.""Yes," Alexander said."And Alexander." A pause. "He is going to try to make this about family. About the two of you. He is going to use thirty-four years because that is the only leverage he has left." Whitmore paused again. "Be prepared for that."Alexander said nothing for a moment."I'

  • The Billionaire's Substitute Bride   Chapter 90: Facing It

Amelia's POV Rodriguez arrived at eleven thirty. She came through the door with the flat professional efficiency she brought to every scene and went directly to the east wing with the forensics contact while Victor briefed her in the corridor. I heard their voices through the wall, low and precise, the specific language of people who did this kind of work and had learned to strip the personal out of the professional without losing the detail.Alexander was in the study. He had gone there after the security room, not in the way of someone escaping, in the way of someone who needed a specific room to be in. The study was his room in the way the east wing had been mine. The place where he thought.I gave him twenty minutes. Then I went in.He was not at his desk.He was in the chair by the window, the one that faced the garden, and he was sitting with his forearms on his knees and his hands loose and his eyes on the middle distance in the way of someone who was not seeing the garden at

  • The Billionaire's Substitute Bride   Chapter 89: Sabotage

Amelia's POVWe were back at the estate by ten.Victor had driven fast and said nothing, which was the appropriate response to both the situation and the quality of silence in the car. Alexander had been on calls for most of the journey, the low controlled voice that meant he was managing something serious without performing the management.I had looked out the window at the dark road and thought about sketchbooks.Forty three of them over six weeks.Every morning before five. The dated pages, the proportion studies, the colour work, the iterations of each piece from first rough thought to resolved construction. The specific evidence that the collection had been built over time, by one person, in one room, before sunrise.Gone.The show pieces were safe. The legal case was unaffected. I had told Jade both of those things and I had meant them. But the sketchbooks were the record of the making. The documented proof that this work had a process, a history, a human being behind it who had
