Kyra

I woke to the soft rustling of sheets and the distant sound of footsteps on the wooden hallway floor. It took me a second to remember where I was. Julie was still asleep beside me, her lashes resting on her cheeks and her little mouth slightly open. Her breathing was light… steady. Relief washed over me. No attacks. No signs of discomfort. Everything was calm.

I moved carefully, trying to get out of bed without waking her—but when I lifted my eyes, I saw the silhouette standing in the doorway.

And I froze.

White shirt. Arms crossed. Eyes fixed on me. Expressionless. Cold. Observant.

I stood up in a contained impulse, straightening my wrinkled dress and trying to find the right words while my chest rose and fell with anxiety.

“Mr. Blackthorne, I’m sorry. I… cleared my throat, looking away. “I ended up staying. She asked for a story and… fell asleep in the middle of it. I didn’t mean to invade her privacy.”

He raised one eyebrow slowly and stared at me without moving.

“Do you think you invaded it?”

“Yes… I mean, I know I shouldn’t have. It wasn’t in the instructions. I’m sorry. It was only supposed to be a story, but I ended up falling asleep with her.”

He stepped into the room, stopping beside the bed, and looked at his daughter for a few seconds. Then he turned back to me.

“She had a calm night. It’s been a long time since she slept this much.”

It wasn’t a question. It was a statement.

I nodded carefully.

“No attacks. No nightmares,” he continued, his voice low like cold silk. “That hasn’t happened in… months. You’re doing well. I hope you don’t leave.”

I swallowed hard.

“So… you’re not angry about this? I tho—”

“You broke a rule,” he interrupted, looking straight into my eyes. “But I won’t punish you for it. It doesn’t seem like such audacity.”

My breath caught in my chest. He took another step forward. Close enough for me to catch his scent. Subtle. Expensive. Enveloping. And as dangerous as his presence.

“You disobeyed… gently. And that is rare, Miss Lystem. I liked the part where you challenged me. You’re lucky you caught me in a good mood.”

A strange heat spread across my cheeks. As if that had been romantic—which it absolutely wasn’t.

“I just wanted to take care of her like a child should be cared for, Blackthorne. She’s still a baby. She needs affection, comfort, bedtime stories. I’m sorry, but… do you even understand that?”

“And you did. Better than I expected. Better than I allowed. But that’s good when it comes to Julie. And… I don’t understand, Kyra. I don’t know how to deal with children. I don’t know how to take care of my own daughter.”

“It’s never too late to learn something new.”

Liam walked around me like a wolf circling its prey—without touching, but invading my space invisibly.

“Maybe you still don’t understand what obedience means in this house. Or the weight of an exception. But…” he stopped behind me, so close his breath brushed the back of my neck, “…you’re learning fast, Kyra. It seems like you’ve been through all of this before. And do you know the best part? Your availability.”

I closed my eyes for a second. Part of me wanted to step back. Another part… wanted to know how far this would go.

He stepped away with the same calm he had approached with.

“From today on, you take care of her until eight at night. Or until after she falls asleep. After that, it’s with me.”

“With… you?” A small laugh slipped out before I could stop it.

He turned toward the door without looking back.

“You understood me perfectly.”

“I’m not a whore, Blackthorne. I didn’t accept this job to indulge your whims. Don’t think you know anything about my past, because not even I do. Don’t try to use anything against me. You’d be wasting your time.”

I stood up and my body bumped into his chest. The scent of whiskey mixed with his perfume left me breathless, and I inhaled deeply before sitting back down.

Liam

She answered with tears in her eyes, as if all of this bothered her deeply. And if it bothers her, it’s because there are reasons. A past I will uncover as soon as possible.

She didn’t understand that she awakened the door to my desire the moment she stepped into this house. She tries to be seductive, but fails miserably. While Julie… feels better this way.

“And I do not think you’re a whore. I ask that you forgive me if you understood it that way.” She wouldn’t look at me anymore.

“May I have something to drink in this mansion? Other than water and tea?” she asked, forcing an awkward smile.

I should drink more. Maybe then I’d have the courage to do something more with her.

I hate myself for remembering Eva when I look at her. Her black eyes and brown hair are the only differences—but the face… they look like twins. Damn it. She could resemble anyone, except the woman I loved the most in my life.

“You may feel free after my daughter falls asleep, Kyra. You can drink, use the pool or the jacuzzi. Make yourself comfortable whenever you wish.”

“Thank you, but I’ll settle for a glass of whiskey.”

“As you wish.” I stepped aside to let her pass and watched her go.

Before going up to my room, I looked through the window and there she was. In the garden, wrapped in a coat, holding a glass of whiskey as if that could warm her skin.

Before lying down, I checked my emails one last time. And there it was—the damn message:

“Hello, Liam. We will not drag this out. Julie’s grandfather and I have already filed for custody of our granddaughter. If you lower your guard, it will be better. You know that. You don’t have time for the girl and live inside this depressive bubble you call life and work. Accept it and everything will be better for her.

Zinna”

Julie’s damn grandmother never stops. Maybe I should show her that you don’t mess with daughters who have fathers willing to fight for them.

I opened the email and replied with all the politeness she deserved:

“Zinna, from the bottom of my heart, I hope you and your husband go to hell. And you know what? I’m done trying to be polite with you. If you bring up this subject again, I promise to ruin both of your lives. Just like you silently wish for me. And for the last time, I’ll repeat: Julie will never go with you, because what you did to her mother’s life is a sin that goes beyond death to be paid. You miserable bastards. Stay away from my daughter, or I will personally end this pathetic thing you call a life.

Liam Blackthorne”

Everyone carries some kind of pain that eats them from the inside. But when I look at Kyra, the world seems to cancel out everything that happened. Her face always reminds me of chaos and, at the same time, I see healing right in front of me.

I must be going crazy.

Or becoming far too obsessed.

Maybe it’s just the effect of the alcohol, which will pass faster than I expect.

THE WEDDINGKyraI didn’t imagine Liam would be so efficient and fast. He literally thought of everything. I didn’t worry about anything, except the dress fittings, the buffet tastings, and the chosen songs, as well as the arrangements that would be at the main entrance.I didn’t want anything too big, but Liam insisted on showing everyone how happy he was. Who am I to stop the happiness of my beloved! The makeup artist was giving the final touches to the blush — I didn’t want anything extravagant, but they insist that today is my day. The most important and unforgettable day of my life.I was anxious, a part of me wanted to get married quickly and run out of there. The other part wanted the world to know that Liam Blackthorne would be my husband, forever. I wanted to scream that I love him, but the only thing I could feel was nervousness. My hands sweating nonstop, my mind telling me I’m forgetting something and I just wanting everything to be over soon.Julie was the flower girl. Sh

KyraI woke up still feeling my body tired. My head ached as I tried to get up or process anything."Good morning, Aunt Kyra. Are you okay?" Julie was sitting in the armchair next to the bed, with her bunny on her lap and her hands restless."She was waiting to have breakfast with you. She refused to go with me, unfortunately." Liam was focused on his laptop. "Good morning, my love." "What time is it? Did I really sleep that much?" "Almost ten, but I’m not that hungry. My dad gave me toast with honey, so I can wait." "I’m going to get ready and we’ll go down, okay?" She nodded and ran to the balcony.Liam was too focused on the spreadsheet he was reviewing."Something urgent?" I approached him subtly, without invading his space."I think we’ll have to go back today. Some issues came up at the company and I need to be there within 48 hours." The irritation in his eyes was clear. "I’m sorry, I promise we’ll come back and this time, I swear I’ll have more time for you." "It’s okay.

LiamKyra woke up early, opened the curtains, and avoided me all morning. We went down together for breakfast. At lunch, she went out with Julie to explore the beach, while I stayed back, just watching from a distance how perfectly they fit together."It’s a beautiful view, isn’t it?" the lady beside me asked. Until then, I hadn’t even noticed her presence. "Is that your wife and your daughter?" "My fiancée and my daughter" I replied, still lost in the scenery I never imagined seeing with my own eyes. "It really is a beautiful view." "And what are you waiting for to marry her?" The question hit me deeply, even though I had never really stopped to think about it. "Your daughter likes her, and from what your eyes say, you admire her… and love her too, I suppose." Before the conversation could go any further, Olivia appeared again. All calculated, as always."Do you already know each other?" she asked, placing her hands on the woman’s shoulders, who smiled at me."We just met, and we

LiamKyra and Julie decided they wanted to go to an island, and here we are, the three of us, in Mykonos, Greece. We’re staying at the Myconian Villa Collection, in Elia Beach.Julie’s doctor came with us—I can’t risk my daughter’s life while we’re out here living. As a precaution, and since they’re already friends, I decided to invite her and pay her much more than usual.Kyra seemed at ease, or at least that’s what she tried to show. At times, I caught her with a distant look, as if searching for something she had left behind. And this time, it was happening again. She stared at the sea through the window, breathing softly, lost in thought."So… have you decided where to start?" "You know, Liam, I was thinking about how things can change in the blink of an eye. A few months ago, I was sure I was going to die without any mercy. But then I met you, you introduced me to Julie and…" she didn’t finish, and her words lingered in the air."And all of this only happened because you chose t

A few days laterKyraThe happy days were numbered. Liam’s lawyers were downstairs, papers in hand, talking about something I couldn’t hear—but I knew exactly what it was about: Marcos.Julie was packing the backpack we’d take on the trip, while I… my heart was tight with everything that had happened."Kyra? They’re gone." Liam stood at the door, arms crossed and an irritated expression."I…" I wanted to say something, but nothing came out. "Liam, things weren’t supposed to happen like this. You only acted that way because of me. I don’t want you to take the blame for something I brought into your life." I looked out the window, trying to gather strength to fix whatever I could."None of this is your fault. He was always a mistake that came along with his sister. Let’s just say you were essential for what I wanted. Believe me, none of this is your fault. I would never let someone touch the person I love—and that person is you." "I know you knew each other before you met me, but you

LiamI decided I wouldn’t insist on that subject anymore, even with something inside me screaming to pull an answer out of her."Alright. I’m sorry, sometimes I really am an idiot and don’t notice the good things I have around me." Her hand touched mine and I felt my body react instantly. "I really want to be with you, I just don’t want to be a burden." "You’ve never been a burden, you know that." I stopped the car still far from home. Julie looked at me sleepily but didn’t ask anything."I want to tell you that I… that I think it’s very unfair for you to want to go somewhere far from where I can see you every day when I wake up. You know that I…" "Liam, you won’t see me wake up every day, just like I’m not going to disappear overnight either. After all, what are you so afraid of?" Her gaze confused me, especially when she locked eyes with me in such an intimate moment like this. "I’m not going to disappear from your life, even if you wanted that right now, okay?"Kyra made me real

LiamPeople say the devil hides in the details. I never believed that until I opened my private email that morning. It wasn’t a business email. It wasn’t a partner trying to grab another piece of my fortune. It wasn’t even Zinna or Olavo begging for Julie’s presence. It was something much worse.Th

LiamI drove in silence. The car felt too small for the fury consuming me. I heard her breathe, slow, heavy from the alcohol. Still, each sound from her struck me like an invitation. When I finally parked in front of the mansion, I stayed a few seconds without moving. I could simply leave her there
