ZARIELLE’S POV

Three years. That’s how long I’ve loved Kael — three years of quiet mornings, shared dreams and promises I thought were carved in stone. We grew up together, built our world together and everyone said we were perfect. I believed it too.

Until tonight.

I stood outside the restaurant, my hand raised to push the glass door open, when I heard his voice. Not the voice he used with me — softer, warmer, dangerously tender.

“You have no idea how long I’ve waited to be alone with you like this” Kael said.

My breath caught. I didn’t move. I couldn’t.

“And Zarielle?” That was my best friend, Elara. Her laugh was light, happy — the same laugh I’d known since we were seven. “What about her? She’s your fiancee”

Kael scoffed. A sound that cut deeper than any shout “She’s saf She’s steadynBut she’s never been you I stayed with her out of duty, Elara. Nothing more”

My heart slammed against my ribs so hard it hurt Duty Not love. Three years and I was nothing but an obligation.

“Then why not tell her?” Elara asked, her voice dropping. “Why keep pretending?”

“Because breaking it off would be messy” Kael answered, cold and calm. “She has no one else. Her family… everything is tied to ours. She’d fall apart. And honestly? It’s easier this way. She’s content with the scraps I give her. She doesn’t demand the things you do”

Scraps. That’s what my love was to him.

I stepped back, my shoes silent on the pavement. I didn’t burst in. I didn’t scream. Somewhere inside me, the girl who believed in forever just died. I turned and walked away — away from the restaurant, away from the man I’d given everything to, away from the friend I’d trusted with my life.

I didn’t go home. I couldn’t. I wandered the streets until the sky turned pale gray, my mind replaying every word, every smile, every ‘I love you’ that had been nothing but a lie.

When I finally unlocked our door, Kael was there — sitting on the sofa, scrolling through his phone like nothing had happened. He looked up when I entered, frowning slightly.

“Where were you?” he asked, casual as always. “I messaged you”

I stood in the entryway, keys still in my hand. I looked at him really looked at him — and wondered how I’d missed it all. The late nights, the guarded phone, the way his eyes never quite met mine anymore.

“Out,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. It was steady, hollow. “Thinking”

Kael stood, stepping toward me with that familiar gentle smile — the one I now knew was just a mask. “About what, baby? You seem off”

Baby. The word tasted like poison.

“I heard you” I told him.

His smile didn’t fade, but his eyes shifted. “Heard me?”

“At the restaurant last night. With Elara”

Silence. Long, heavy, suffocating silence. Then he sighed — not remorse, but annoyance.

“Zarielle…” He reached for me, but I stepped back. “It’s not what you think”

“Then tell me what it is,” I said. “Tell me I misheard you say I was nothing but duty. Tell me you haven’t been in love with her all this time”

He didn’t. He just looked at me, and in that moment, I saw everything clearly — the guilt, the calculation, the relief that I finally knew.

“I never meant to hurt you,” he said, and somehow that was worse than the betrayal itself.

“You didn’t mean to?” A bitter laugh escaped me. “You chose her every single day while choosing me too. You let me plan our wedding, pick our home, love you with everything I had — and you never meant to hurt me?”

“It wasn’t that simple” he insisted.

“Wasn’t it?” I looked him in the eye. “You loved her. You stayed with me for convenience. That’s as simple as it gets”

I turned and walked toward our bedroom — his bedroom to pack. Kael didn’t follow. He didn’t fight for me. He just stood there, quiet, as I realized the hardest truth of all: he wasn’t stopping me because he never really wanted me to stay.

I moved into a small apartment across the city quiet, empty, entirely mine. The first week was a blur of tears and cold nights where I’d reach for him in my sleep and wake up clutching nothing but air.

Then Elara came.

She showed up at my door, looking uncertain, clutching her bag like a shield. I stared at her — the girl who’d been there through every heartbreak, every joy, every moment and felt nothing but a quiet, exhausted hurt.

“Can I come in?” she asked softly.

I stepped aside. I didn’t offer tea. I didn’t sit close.

“I’m sorry” she said immediately. “Zarielle, I never meant—”

“Never meant what?” I interrupted. “Never meant to fall in love with him? Never meant to hide it? Never meant to smile at me while knowing you were breaking me apart?”

Elara’s eyes filled. “I tried to stop it. So many times. But it just happened”

It just happened. As if betrayal was something that simply fell from the sky.

“And me?” I asked. “Did I just happen too? Three years of my life — did none of that matter?”

“Of course it mattered” she whispered. “You’re my best friend”

“Then why did you do it?” My voice cracked. “Why him?”

She didn’t answer right away. When she did, her words were quiet and honest in the cruelest way.

“Because he chose me” she said “And for the first time, I felt like I mattered more than second place”

I stared at her. “So I was the one keeping you second?”

“You were everything to him” she said. “And I was tired of being invisible”

I stood up, my heart hardening into something cold and still“You weren’t invisible, Elara. You were just waiting for your turn. And I was never a prize to be won — I was a place he stayed until he decided what he really wanted”

I walked to the door and held it open.

“He’s yours now” I said. “All of him. The lies, the silence, the way he’ll put you second when someone new comes along. He’s yours. And I’m finally free”

Elara left without another word. I locked the door behind her, leaned against it, and breathed — deep, shaky, whole breaths for the first time in years.

I didn’t know what came next. I didn’t know how long it would take to heal. But I knew one thing for certain: I would never again be someone’s safe, easy, convenient choice.

From now on, I would be loved fully — or not at all.

ZARIELLE’S POVThe door clicked shut behind me, and I stood there in the quiet entryway, my hand still resting on the cold metal. The sound of Kael’s car fading down the street lingered in my ears long after it was gone. I didn’t move right away. My chest felt tight, like every breath had to fight its way in and out, but beneath that heaviness, something else was stirring — a quiet, steady kind of clarity that hadn’t been there before.I walked to the window and watched the rain still pouring down, blurring the streetlights into soft, golden streaks. For so long, I’d imagined this moment — him coming back, admitting he was wrong, saying he missed me — and in every version I’d played in my head, I’d run to him. I’d forgiven him. I’d fallen right back into the same old patterns because I couldn’t bear the thought of being without him.But today? Today I didn’t run. I didn’t beg. I didn’t even let his words pull me back to the past. I stood my ground. I told him the truth — and the truth

  • The Billionaire's Unexpected Love   Chapter 4

ZARIELLE’S POVThree months passed. The wedding, the whispers, the old ache — they all faded, softening into something quiet. I started working at a small design studio downtown, and for the first time in years, my days were filled with things that were entirely mine: sketches, fabric swatches, late afternoons laughing with my new coworkers.I thought I was fine. I thought I had truly moved on — until the rainstorm hit that afternoon.I was standing under the awning of a café, waiting for the downpour to slow, when a car pulled up right in front of me. The window rolled down, and there he was.“Get in. I’ll drive you home.”Kael.My breath caught. It had been weeks since I last saw him — and he looked different. Tired. The sharp, confident glow I’d always known was gone, replaced by something worn and heavy.“I’m fine here,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “Thank you.”“Zarielle, don’t be stubborn.” His voice was softer than I remembered — almost pleading. “It’s pouring. Please.”I h

  • The Billionaire's Unexpected Love   Chapter 3

ZARIELLE’S POVTwo months had passed since I walked away from Kael. Two months of quiet mornings, of learning how to make coffee just the way I liked it, of sleeping in the middle of the bed instead of clinging to the edge. I thought I was healing — until the invitation arrived. It came in a crisp white envelope, slipped under my door. My name was written in Elara’s handwriting — neat, careful, like nothing had broken between us.You are invited to celebrate the marriage of Elara Reyes and Kael Monteverde. The paper crinkled in my hand. My breath hitched, sharp and painful. They were getting married. They were doing everything we were supposed to do — the life I’d dreamed of building with him, now being built by them.I set it on the table, face down. I didn’t want to look at it. But all night, it sat there — heavy, silent, a reminder that they had moved forward while I was still learning how to stand. For days, I stared at it. Should I go? Should I stay away? Part of me wanted to sho

  • The Billionaire's Unexpected Love   Chapter 2

ZARIELLE’S POVThe silence in the apartment didn’t feel heavy anymore. It felt light. Like every word I’d said to Elara had lifted a weight I’d been carrying for years. But as days turned into weeks, that quiet freedom started mixing with something sharper — the sting of seeing them everywhere.Everywhere I went, their names came up. Did you hear about Kael and Elara? They look so happy. They’re perfect together.Perfect.I’d hear it while buying coffee, while walking to work, even from people I barely knew. And every time, I’d smile and nod like it didn’t feel like someone was pressing a hand against my chest, squeezing until it hurt.It was a Tuesday afternoon when I saw him again.I was coming out of the small bookstore I’d started visiting on my lunch breaks, a book tucked under my arm, when I heard his voice.“Zarielle.”I froze. I knew that voice — low, familiar, the one I’d woken up to every morning for three years. I didn’t want to turn around. For a second, I considered walki
