The aftermath of Silas’s arrival felt like a siege. The Thorne estate, which had already felt like a fortress, now felt like a cage with a wolf inside. Alaric spent the next forty-eight hours locked in his study, the sound of shouting matches and slamming doors echoing through the halls.

I found myself in a strange limbo. I was the wife of the man in the study, but I was also the target of the man in the guest wing. Silas didn't hide his interest in me. He didn't send flowers or write poems; he staged "accidental" encounters in the gallery, the garden, and the dining hall.

Each time, he pushed a boundary. He would stand a fraction too close, his voice dropping to a confidential whisper, telling me things about Alaric that made my blood run cold.

"He doesn't love you, Elara," Silas murmured one afternoon as we stood before a massive oil painting of the Thorne patriarch. "He loves the idea of you. He loves that you are a puzzle he hasn't quite solved. But once the puzzle is complete, Alaric always throws the pieces away."

"You talk as if you know him," I replied, refusing to look at him.

"I know him because I am the version of him that wasn't polished by a boarding school and a trust fund," Silas replied. "I am the truth of the Thorne bloodline. We are predators, Elara. The only difference is that Alaric pretends he is a gentleman. I embrace the hunt."

I stepped away from him, my skin crawling. "I am not a prize to be hunted."

"No," Silas agreed, his voice trailing after me. "You're a player. And players always eventually switch sides when the odds shift."

When I finally returned to the master suite, I found Alaric standing by the window, a glass of amber liquid in his hand. He looked exhausted, the lines around his eyes deeper than they had been a week ago. The moment he saw me, his gaze sharpened, searching my face for any sign of Silas’s influence.

"Did he speak to you?" Alaric asked, his voice rough.

"He does. Constantly," I answered, walking toward him. "He’s trying to get into my head, Alaric. He’s trying to make me distrust you."

Alaric set the glass down with a sharp clink and moved toward me, his movements sudden and predatory. He grabbed my waist and pulled me flush against him, his grip almost bruising. He didn't kiss me immediately; he just breathed me in, his forehead resting against mine.

"Do not listen to him," Alaric commanded, his voice a low growl. "Silas is a master of manipulation. He finds the crack in your armour, and he hammers at it until you break. He doesn't want you, Elara. He wants to use you to break me."

"And what do you want with me?" I whispered, my hands finding the back of his neck. "Is this still just a contract? Or am I just another asset you're protecting from a rival?"

The question hung in the air, heavy and honest. For a second, the mask of the CEO vanished. Alaric’s eyes darkened, filled with a raw, aching hunger that had nothing to do with corporate strategy. He kissed me then, a desperate, consuming collision that tasted of scotch and longing. It was a kiss that demanded everything, a silent plea for me to stay on his side of the line.

As we tumbled back onto the bed, the world outside the room vanished. In the heat of his touch, I felt a connection that terrified me. I was falling for the man who had ruined my life, and I was doing it while another man tried to steal me.

But as Alaric’s lips moved to my collarbone, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I tried to ignore it, but it buzzed again, and then again.

I pulled away, breathless, and glanced at the screen. It was an email from an encrypted address. There was no text, only an attachment.

I opened the file, and my heart stopped. It was a photo of my father, taken only hours ago, sitting in a dark room with a man whose face was blurred, but whose hand was resting possessively on my father’s shoulder.

The caption read: The liability is back in play. Tell Alaric the price for your father's life has just gone up.

The silence that followed Alaric’s announcement was absolute, a vacuum that seemed to suck the very air from the room. I stayed frozen on the bed, my heart hammering against my ribs, while Alaric stood tall, his body coiled like a spring. The tension between us, which had just been a fire of desire, was now a wall of ice.The footsteps echoing in the hallway were slow and deliberate. Each click of a heel on the marble sounded like a countdown. Then, he appeared in the doorway. He didn't look like a monster or a ruined man. In fact, he looked like a mirror image of Alaric, but with a softer, more dangerous edge. Where Alaric was a storm of cold steel and obsidian, this man was a simmering heat. He had the same piercing sea green eyes, but they were framed by long, dark lashes and a smirk that suggested he knew every secret in the room. He wore a linen suit the colour of sand, looking more like he had just stepped off a yacht in Amalfi than a battlefield in New York."Alaric," the man s

I bolted back to my room, my mind a whirlwind of betrayal and confusion. I ignored Alaric, who was still standing by the window, his silhouette a dark blot against the moonlight. I dove for my laptop and opened the email from Julian. The image was grainy, but the text was clear. It was a page from the black ledger. My father’s name was there, but it wasn't just a debt. There was a note in the margin, written in a sharp, aggressive hand.Vance knows about the illegitimate heir. Payment made to ensure silence. If he speaks, destroy the asset.I stared at the words until they blurred. An illegitimate heir? Alaric was the sole heir to the Thorne empire, or so the world believed. If there was another, someone with a prior claim to the throne, the entire corporate structure of Thorne International was a house of cards."You're reading it," Alaric's voice came from behind me, cold and sudden.I spun around. He was standing right behind me, his presence towering. He didn't look angry; he look

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. I felt the air leave my lungs, leaving me gasping in the silence of the room. My father. The man who had begged me to save the company, the man who had looked so broken in his study, was listed as a liability in Alaric’s secret book of sins."What does that mean?" I asked, my voice trembling. "Liability? My father is a logistics expert, not a criminal."Alaric watched me, his eyes cold and calculating. He didn't offer comfort. He didn't tell me it was a mistake. "It means your father has been playing a much deeper game than he let on, Elara. The debts he told you about? They weren't just bad investments. He was skimming from his partners to fund something else. Something that the Thorne family has been covering up for years."I shook my head, refusing to believe it. "You're lying. You're trying to isolate me. You want me to distrust my own family, so I have no one to turn to but you."Alaric stepped closer, his expression unreadable. "Believ

The woman was trembling so violently that she could barely stand. She looked like a broken porcelain doll, her expensive gown ruined by streaks of crimson and rainwater. Alaric reacted with a speed that blurred my vision. He was across the room in a heartbeat, catching her before she collapsed onto the marble floor."Seraphina?" Alaric’s voice lost its cold edge, replaced by a sharp, jagged urgency. "What happened? Who found it?"I stood frozen, my dress still half unzipped, the cool air of the room hitting my skin. The romantic tension that had been simmering between us just moments ago vanished, replaced by a thick, suffocating sense of dread. I didn't know who this woman was, but the way Alaric held her was not the way he held me. There was a familiarity there, a deep-seated history that I had not been briefed on in our contract. The tenderness in his voice was a weapon, reminding me that while he had bought my presence, he had not bought my place in his heart."The vault in the ea

The wedding was more of a corporate merger disguised as a fairytale celebration. The venue was a private estate in the Hamptons, a sprawling masterpiece of white marble and manicured gardens. Every detail was designed to scream wealth and stability. The guest list was a "Who's Who" of the global elite—people who viewed marriage as a strategic alliance rather than a romantic union.I wore a gown of architectural silk that hugged my curves and flowed into a dramatic train. It was a dress designed to make me look like a queen, but as I looked in the mirror, I felt more like a prize horse being prepared for auction."You look breathtaking," my father whispered, entering the dressing room. He looked relieved, the weight of the debt finally lifted from his shoulders. "Thank you for doing this, Elara. I know how much you hate him.""I do hate him," I said, my voice flat. "But I love our legacy more."When the doors opened and I began my walk down the aisle, the collective gasp of the crowd w
