I sat with the ring in one hand and the petition in the other for longer than I meant to, waiting for the choice to resolve itself into something simpler. It didn't. The papers belonged to the woman I'd become after Roman destroyed my trust. The ring belonged to the marriage I still couldn't quite stop wanting. Both were true at once.

I wasn't ready to wear the ring. I wasn't ready to sign the papers either. Maybe that was the most honest answer I had.

I put both in my bag and drove back to Har

Roman had the listing open on his phone before we'd even parked, already asking about commute times and natural light and security like he was preparing for a board meeting."We're viewing it, Roman. We're not acquiring a small country.""Preparation is not acquisition.""You have the expression you use before acquisitions.""That's simply my face."The townhouse was beautiful without being absurd, tall windows, a kitchen that made me want to cook things I didn't know how to cook, room enough for two proper offices. Neither of us had chosen it beforehand. We walked in together, blank slate, and that alone felt different from anything we'd built before. He wanted a bigger wardrobe. I wanted the room with the best light for reading and restoration work. He hated an archway I loved instantly. I caught him mentally arranging his books on an empty shelf before we'd even discussed whether we liked the place."We could put the table here," I said, without thinking. "We'd need shelves for the

The question followed us home from the collection. Roman didn't push. That almost made it worse."I want the job," I finally said, standing in our kitchen."I know.""And I want this city. I want the work. I want the independence I've found here." I made myself keep going. "And I want you. Not visiting every few weeks. Not scheduled weekends. Not a marriage conducted through airports and video calls.""So why do you sound like you're confessing to something?"Because some old part of me still believed that wanting my husband woven that deeply into my life was dangerously close to surrendering the independence I'd fought so hard to build."Wanting me isn't the same as needing my permission to exist," he said, unpacking groceries, stealing a piece of cheese off the counter before I could stop him."So in this imaginary perfect life," he asked, "how much closet space do I get?""We've reached the limits of the fantasy.""Then it's not everything I want.""Tell me what you actually see,"

I realized, lying there beside him, that I'd been interpreting almost every adjustment he made through the lens of our failed marriage, so determined not to let him sacrifice himself for me that I was doing something close to what he'd once done, deciding for him what a meaningful life should look like."There's a difference," he said gently, "between losing yourself for someone and deliberately making room for someone you love.""How am I supposed to know the difference?""You ask me."That landed harder than a longer answer would have.He explained he hadn't canceled everything. He'd delegated things a Chairman probably should have delegated anyway. He'd moved meetings that didn't need him physically present, kept the ones that did. And he'd wanted these three weeks, not endured them."So this is entirely selfish?" I teased."Completely.""You reorganized Ashbourne because you wanted to sleep in my bed?""Among other compelling strategic objectives."I kissed him for that, and the s

He stood in my bedroom waiting, and I realized there had once been a version of me who would have been terrified of this exact moment, certain that letting him in meant losing myself all over again. That version of me was gone. I just wanted him there because I loved living with him.I crossed the room, took his face in my hands, and kissed him before I said anything at all."Three weeks," I said finally. His expression changed instantly. "That's a yes?""That's me agreeing to a trial period.""For my own marriage?""Your performance will be reviewed."He looked genuinely offended, then delighted. "When do I move in?""Your suitcase is already here.""That's visiting. I'm talking about moving in."The distinction mattered more than I expected, and two days later I understood why. Roman arrived with considerably more than a suitcase, garment bags, boxes of books, enough shoes to require an explanation, his preferred coffee because mine was, in his words, unacceptable."You said part of

I lay beside him, the phone still glowing faintly on the nightstand, and looked around the apartment differently than I had ten minutes earlier. His toothbrush, his shirt in my closet, his suitcase by the door, all of it had felt romantic because it was evidence that he could visit the independent life I’d built. Now the word permanent was sitting in the room with us, and those same objects meant something else entirely. My first reaction to the offer wasn’t fear. It was excitement, sharp and immediate, and that frightened me more than the offer itself.“I think I want them to offer it properly,” I admitted.“The permanent role?”“Yes.”He didn’t react badly. Pride came first, the way it always did with him now. But he grew quieter after, the practical weight of it settling in.“We don’t need to decide tonight whether you live here forever because one email used the word permanent,” he said. “Find out what they’re actually offering. Then decide whether you want it.”“And us?”“We’re n

I studied his face and genuinely couldn't tell. He let me sit in that uncertainty for only a few seconds."They confirmed me."Roman was officially Chairman. But he'd come outside before celebrating with the board, before calling his mother, before letting anyone congratulate him properly. I was the first person he'd wanted to see.I threw my arms around him before remembering we were standing outside a formal board meeting. He laughed and caught me anyway, nothing ceremonious about it."What happened?" I asked. He kept it brief. He'd defended the flexible arrangement himself, made his own case, no vote from me involved. He'd convinced enough directors that being a husband with a life outside Ashbourne didn't make him less capable of leading it."You told me to earn it.""Did you?""Apparently.""Then congratulations, Mr. Chairman."I kissed him.He told me quietly, afterward, that when the final vote came through, he'd expected the enormous triumph he'd imagined for years. He'd felt
