Lily's POV

I finally showed him the journal on a Tuesday night, three days before the surgery, once both children had gone down and the house had settled into its particular late, quiet stillness.

I found him in bed already, propped against the pillows with a book he wasn't really reading, the same restless energy he'd been carrying all week etched faintly around his eyes. He looked up when I came in, and something in my face must have given me away, because he set the book aside immediately.

Alexander's POV They let me see her a little after eight. A nurse came to find me in the waiting room, Alena still curled against my chest in a restless, exhausted half-sleep, and crouched down to speak quietly, her voice carrying the particular gentle caution of someone delivering news that was good but not yet complete. "She's settled in recovery," she said. "You can come sit with her. I want to prepare you, though, Mr. Sterling. She's still under the effects of the anesthesia. It could be hours before she wakes." "Hours," I repeated. "The surgery was long, and the anesthesia used for a procedure like this takes time to clear her system fully. It's not unusual for patients to remain unconscious well into the evening, sometimes longer." She offered a small, reassuring smile. "It doesn't mean anything's wrong. Her vitals are strong. Her body's simply doing the work it needs to do." "How will we know," I asked, "when something's actually wrong, versus just slow?" "We're monitorin

Alexander's POVBy ten in the morning, the waiting room had gone quiet in the particular way places do when the people inside them have simply run out of things to say.Grandma Rose had tried, valiantly, to keep some semblance of normalcy going, murmuring softly to Aiden when he stirred, asking James quiet questions about the company that neither of them particularly cared about answering. But the conversation kept dying out, swallowed by the low hum of the vending machine and the distant, muffled sound of a phone ringing somewhere down the hall, and eventually she gave up trying entirely, simply sitting beside me in silence, her hand occasionally finding mine.I checked my watch. 10:04. Two hours since they'd taken her back.*Six to eight hours,* I reminded myself. *This is nothing. This is barely the beginning.*It didn't help. Every minute felt like its own small eternity, stretched thin and unbearable, and I understood, somewhere around the third or fourth time I checked my watch

Alexander's POVThey drew my blood at six in the morning, in a small room down the hall from Lily's, a nurse working quickly and efficiently while I stared at the ceiling tiles and tried not to think too hard about why I was doing it."Given her surgical history and the length of this procedure, we like to have compatible donors on standby," Dr. Patel had explained the week before, when I'd asked what I could actually do to help. "You're a match. It would ease my mind considerably, having your blood already banked rather than scrambling for it if she needs a transfusion mid-surgery."I hadn't hesitated then, and I didn't hesitate now, watching the small bag slowly fill, dark and steady, some strange comfort settling into me at the thought that a piece of me might end up keeping her alive today, the same way it had for our daughter months ago.*Take whatever you need,* I thought, watching the nurse label the bag with careful precision. *Take all of it, if it means she comes back to us.

I climbed onto the bed beside him, the leather journal clutched against my chest, my heart beating faster than the moment probably warranted. "I've been writing in this. For weeks now. Things I don't want to lose."His expression shifted, softened, something careful and attentive settling over his features."Can I see?""Not all of it." I opened it slowly, flipping past pages I wasn't ready to share yet, and stopped on one near the middle. "This part.

Lily's POVThe office looked the same as I'd left it, and somehow that felt like its own small miracle.I stood in the doorway a moment, taking it in, the particular ordinary clutter of a company still running without me, files stacked neatly on my desk, a small plant David had apparently taken it upon himself to water in my absence, and felt something settle warm in my chest at how little it had all changed, even while everything about me had."You didn't have to come in," David said, appearing in the doorway of Alexander's office, concern already written across his face. "We've got things handled, Lily.""I know." I set my bag down carefully. "I just needed to see it. Sign a few things properly, walk through the Hendricks contract myself instead of over email. Two weeks from now I won't exactly be in a position to catch anything that slips through, and I'd rather leave things tidy."David studied me a long moment, something careful in his expression."How are you doing?" he asked. "

  • The Billionaire’s Wife Revenge Plot    Chapter 106

Lily's POVI'd started counting the days differently. Not the way I had before, checking off the calendar with a kind of grim determination, crossing out each square like progress toward something worth reaching. Now I woke each morning and thought, immediately, *four weeks left*, then *three weeks and five days*, the number shrinking steadily whether I wanted it to or not. Somewhere in the last few days, without fully meaning to, I'd started dreading its arrival more than I feared the tumor itself.I sat in the nursery that morning, our son finally down for his nap, and let the thought I'd been avoiding for days finally surface properly.*I don't want to have this surgery.*It landed heavy and terrible in my chest, immediate guilt following right behind it. I thought of Alena's small hand pressed against my stomach, listening for the baby. I thought of our son's tiny fist curled around my finger the first time I'd held him. I thought of Alexander's face in that hospital hallway, exh
