Before she could say anything else, Vanessa quickly intervened, almost pleading:

“Victoria, I was the one who invited her to have lunch with us. Does that bother you?”

Victoria looked at her friend, reading the request in her eyes. She didn't want to refuse, but her heart closed up at the sight of Vivian. She felt the same discomfort she had felt with Ciara.

“He's our partner. And now, I'm going to make him fulfill his part of the agreement,” said Victoria, her voice cold as steel. She walked away, picking up her cell phone. She didn't need to call him. He already knew. He was watching.“Jackson, should I go find him now?” she asked, her voice low.“Yes. And I'm coming with you. We'll give him the show he wants so badly.”“Are you going to... pretend you're abandoning me?” A ghostly smile touched Victoria's lips. The pain of humiliation had turned into icy fury.“Worse. We're going to fake a divorce.”Divorce?“Just do as I say. Everything will be fine,” Jackson's voice was a promise of retribution. Camila's life was at stake. His patience had run out. He hated Ellijah. Now he detested him. But he knew the creature was a cornered animal, dangerous. He couldn't scare him. He had to lure him in.“Okay. I'll do what you say

The seed of doubt had been planted. Was Victoria's sadness... real? For a moment, Elijah questioned everything.“I wasn't pretending,” Vanessa's voice was cold, cutting through the quiet of the hospital. “But aren't you afraid I'll tell Victoria what you did to me?” She rose from the examination table, her movement deliberate, defiant.A humorless smile touched Ellijah's lips. “Go ahead. Do you have any proof? Besides, she needs me right now. Do you really think she'd be angry?” The disdain in his voice was absolute. He was untouchable.Vanessa had never met a man so brutally cold. Without another word, she turned and left. That afternoon, back at JB, Victoria's phone rang. It was him. Jackson's voice was a restrained storm on the other end of the line. “I told you to stay out of this, Victoria. He's a lunatic.”“It's my mess. I can't just ignore it,” her voice thick with regret. “I

She handed him a beautifully wrapped gift box. “It's my first time visiting your home. A small token of my appreciation.” Inside the box, the listening device waited, a patient insect in a silk web. “Thank you, Victoria. It's lovely,” he said, taking the gift.In the living room, Victoria saw Nolan. Her surprise was genuine, but she instantly stifled it, looking away so as not to arouse suspicion. Nolan did the same. They were strangers, brought together by chance.Lunch was a masterpiece of contained tension. Polite conversation, carefully maintained distances. Then, the signal.Victoria glanced at Vanessa, an almost imperceptible movement. Vanessa stood up. “Excuse me, can you tell me where the restroom is?” Ellijah's house was a maze of corridors, decorated with impeccable and eccentric taste. Vanessa moved quickly, her eyes those of a predator in enemy territory. Restroom.Bedrooms. Office. Nothing. She was abou

A beautiful future, within his reach. The sight of Victoria's desolate face the night before was enough to dispel the fog of suspicion. Ethan's charade... didn't matter. What mattered was the crack that had opened in the wall surrounding her. A crack he intended to break through.“Mr. Danniels, do you need anything else?” Her voice pulled him back, carefully calibrated to sound fragile.“I just wanted to see how you were doing,” he said, his voice soothing. “By the way, do you have any inspiration for the contest yet?”“Yes, I do.”“That's good. I'm sure you'll win,” he said, a soft, possessive light in his eyes.Victoria pretended to wipe a tear with the back of her hand, a performance of vulnerability.“Mr. Danniels, you're right. I can't be depressed.”“I'm sure you'll get through this.”She looked up at him, her eyes liquid and pleading. The

In the back seat of the car, the phone in her hand was her only connection to him. She dialed the number, her heart in her throat. He answered on the second ring, his voice a balm for her weary soul.“Honey, I'm so glad you called so early.”“I miss you,” she whispered. “Our daughter wouldn't stop smiling at me this morning. If you were here...”“Really? She already knows how to smile!” The surprise and joy in his voice were genuine, a stab of longing in her heart.“Yes, she does,” Victoria's voice was tender, a whisper. It was only one night. Why do I miss him so much?Like a spoiled child, she said, her voice sly:"Come home as soon as possible. Or I'll get angry. He laughed on the other end of the line, a warm sound that warmed her inside.“Honey, I'll be back as soon as we figure this out. I promise.”“Okay,” she murmure

In the parking lot, Victoria didn't get into the car. Instead, she crouched down beside the door, her body shaking with sobs that were partly a brilliant performance and partly the release of unbearable tension. He reached her, breathing slightly ragged. Seeing her there, so broken, made his heart twist with a sick, possessive pleasure. He crouched beside her, his voice a poisonous balm. "Don't cry, Victoria. He's not worth your tears.Victoria. No longer Mrs. Carson. The barrier had fallen. She continued to cry, allowing him to come closer, to enter her space.“You should feel lucky you saw his true colors,” he continued. “He doesn't deserve you. He's a playboy!”“Please stop, Mr. Daniels. I... I'm very sad,” she whispered, her voice muffled.“I know. But you need to see the truth,” he said, taking a linen handkerchief from his pocket. “Victoria, you deserve a better man. Someone who truly lo
