Dwayne’s POV

“Don't bother,” I muttered, sipping my drink.

“Why not? Look at what he did to you,” she complained.

“Mom, I know. I saw myself earlier. Don't act yet.”

She froze, examining me with her eyes. “Have you gone soft, Dwayne?”

I dropped the whiskey, then raised my gaze to her. For a second, I saw a flash of Shane smiling at me from when we were kids. Our laughs and giggles as we played, chasing each other.

But it was useless to me now. I blinked and the memory disappeared.

“How's your husband?” I asked, my voice went dead flat.

“He's been handled,” she said, smiling wickedly.

I raised a brow. What did she mean by ‘handled’?

“What did you do?” I asked.

“He'll be dead by the end of the week. I paid someone to take him off. Who knew having doctors around would be a plus?” She said proudly.

“He's not going to wake up. Why not leave him as a vegetable?” I asked, masking my feelings of not supporting her.
