Someone had been there only moments ago.

Maya slowly stepped inside.

“Cassie?” she called softly.

No answer.

Her eyes swept across the room.

Everything looked exactly as it should.

The chairs were neatly arranged around the dining table.

The dish rack was empty.

The counters were spotless.

Nothing looked out of place.

She frowned.

“That’s strange.”

A ceramic mug sat beside the sink.

Half of the tea inside was untouched.

Maya reached for it and carefully placed her fingertips against the side.

Maya stood in the middle of her bedroom long after Cassie had closed the door behind her.The room was quiet again.Too quiet. She lowered her eyes to the file resting in her hands before placing it carefully on the bed. Beside it lay the notebook Cassie had been holding only moments ago.She reached for it, flipping through the pages one after another.Nothing looked different. No pages were folded. No notes had been added. No paper was missing. She picked up Austin’s file next.Every document was still there. His prison records. The photographs and DNA report.Everything appeared untouched.Anyone else would have taken comfort in that.Maya couldn’t.She sat slowly on the edge of the bed and let out a long breath.“If she wasn’t looking for information…” she murmured, “then what was she looking for?”The question stayed with her.Cassie hadn’t looked like someone who had been caught stealing. She had looked…Afraid. Not frightened because Maya had walked in.Frightened because Maya

Red-HandedThe tires gave a soft screech as Maya made a sharp U-turn.Her heartbeat was louder than the engine.“How could I be so careless?” she muttered under her breath. Her eyes darted to the empty passenger seat before returning to the road. She had picked up the wrong handbag in her hurry to leave. The one sitting beside her now only held her wallet, a few receipts, and a notebook she used for work. The bag she had left behind was the one that mattered.Austin’s file. The warning note. Her investigation notebook. If anyone found them…Maya tightened her grip on the steering wheel.“No,” she whispered. “Nobody will.”She pressed harder on the accelerator.Morning traffic had already begun to build, but she barely noticed it. Every red light felt longer than it should. Every slow driver in front of her tested her patience. She tapped her fingers against the steering wheel.“Come on…”The light finally changed. The car moved again. Her mind refused to stay quiet. She replayed the c

Maya didn’t speak until they were halfway back to the car.The folded note rested in her hand, its edges already beginning to crease from how tightly she was holding it.Victor unlocked the car but didn’t get in immediately.Instead, he turned to look at her.“You’re awfully quiet.”Maya let out a slow breath, “I’m thinking.”“About Austin?”She nodded.“And the note.”Victor glanced at it again.“Do you think he dropped it on purpose?”“I don’t know.”“He could have.”“But he also could’ve dropped it while he was running.”Maya looked down at the paper.“I’ve been asking myself the same thing.”Victor leaned against the car.“If he wanted you to find it, he succeeded.”“If he didn’t…”She didn’t finish her sentence.Neither of them needed her to.Ethan walked over, looking disappointed.“I lost him.”Victor looked up.“So did I.”“He knew those back streets better than any of us.”Maya finally slipped the note into her handbag.“We’ll find him again.”Ethan folded his arms.“You soun

Austin Reed stepped inside as though he had walked through those doors a hundred times before. He didn’t stop to look around. He simply adjusted the sleeves of his black shirt and headed toward the bar.Maya lowered her eyes for a second, pretending to look at the menu lying on the table. When she looked up again, Austin had already ordered a drink.Victor reached for his phone and sent her a message.Don’t rush. Watch him first. She slipped the phone back into her bag without replying. That had been her plan all along.Austin accepted his drink with a nod to the bartender before moving to a table near the far end of the room. He sat alone, resting one arm on the chair beside him while lazily looking around the club.Nothing about him suggested he was worried nor did he give the vibe of someone who’s being watched.Maya quietly picked up her bottle of water and took a small sip.Across the room, Victor remained where he was, pretending to scroll through his phone.Ethan stood near the

Victor pulled into the parking lot behind The Velvet Room and switched off the engine. For a second, nobody spoke. The music from inside the club drifted outside in faint waves, mixing with the sound of passing cars.Maya looked through the windshield. The building wasn’t as loud as she had imagined. People walked in and out in small groups, laughing among themselves. A security guard stood near the entrance, barely paying attention to those arriving.Victor glanced at the dashboard clock.11:12 p.m.“We’re early,” he said.“I’d rather be early than miss him.”Victor smiled.“I knew you’d say that.”Before Maya could reply, another car stopped a few spaces away.Ethan stepped out, holding a brown envelope under his arm.He walked over and tapped lightly on Victor’s window.Victor unlocked the doors.“You look nervous,” Ethan said as he climbed into the back seat.“I’m not.”“You’ve been checking the time every thirty seconds.”“I’ve checked it twice.”Victor laughed.“He’s right.”May
