Vireya's POV

When I came to my senses, my vision was hazy. My back pressed against the bark of a massive tree. In front of me stood the crooked cottage of the so-called shaman, our bags still untouched, just outside the door. Zevarion was also tied to the trunk by my side.

“Zev!” I mumbled, my voice muffled by a cloth gag. I twisted to look at him.

He looked at me, then I heard her voice.

“You’ve finally joined the party, princess,” came the sarcastic voice of the dwarf.

She stood a few feet away, arms folded, watching us with wicked amusement.

“Thieves,” she spat. “You came to steal from Elowynd, didn’t you? Thought we were stupid forest folk, easy to fool?”

I tried to speak, but the gag stifled my words. She rolled her eyes and marched over, yanking the cloth from my mouth.

“We’re not thieves,” I said quickly, my voice hoarse. “We’re travelers. We came only seeking help.”

She ignored me, walking back with a scowl.

That’s when I heard it, the soft scrape of rope against stone. I t

Vireya's POV I was fast enough to ducked lower into the shadows of the staircase, heart racing, ears ringing with panic. If they saw me…But the footsteps walked away, heavy and unhurried. I pressed a trembling hand against the stone wall, trying to calm my nerves. I slipped back into my room. My heart was thudding against my ribs, but I’d heard enough. That single conversation confirmed what I had begun to suspect. From what Due, the pack member, once revealed, I knew Xareth was hunting the former Alpha’s son. The one who vanished with a Heartstone no one had been able to track. That Heartstone. It wasn’t just another stolen piece of power, it was important. Critical. Perhaps the final shard in whatever twisted vision Xareth was building. But he couldn’t get it alone. He needed me. My thoughts flicked back to the blood moon, when he spoke of killing Zevarion before my eyes. He said my pain, my anguish, would unlock the full force of the necklace’s power. My hands began to tremble sl

Vireya's POV After a long bath, I collapsed into sleep. When I finally awoke, the world had descended into darkness. Only the moonlight remained, casting a pale silver sheen over the earth. My body felt frail, my limbs aching with exhaustion, but I needed to speak with Zevarion. With trembling hands, I slipped into a simple gown. I reached for the small oil lamp beside my bed and cradled it carefully, shielding its fragile flame as I crept out of the castle. Outside, I lit the lamp fully, its glow flickering against the restless shadows. Then I hurried into the woods, where the darkness grew deeper. The only sounds were the distant, mournful howls of wolves and the brittle crunch of dead leaves beneath my feet. I could hear the rhythm of my own breath.Paranoia gripped me like claws. I kept imagining footsteps behind me. Every few steps, I would stop, hold my breath and turn. But there was nothing. When I finally reached where we always met, I let out a shaky breath. Relief surged

  • The Black Wolf    Chapter 70: A Dangerous Relief

Vireya's POV The castle was eerily quiet as we waited, my heart thudding against my ribs like a trapped bird. Moments dragged like an eternity before the guards finally emerged from the castle gates, but they were empty-handed.“There’s nothing in the woods,” one of them announced, breathless.Nyra’s brow furrowed. “What do you mean?”A soldier stepped forward quickly, glancing nervously at her. “I swear I saw them last night, the orange tent was there. Zevarion was there,” he insisted.Another guard elbowed him aside. “And yet today it’s empty. We searched the clearing, checked every trail nearby, no signs of a tent. No footprints at all.”Nyra’s sharp gaze snapped to me. I fought to hide my racing heart, allowing only a faint smirk to curl my lips. Deep down, my thoughts churned just as wildly as theirs, Where could he have gone so fast?“Where is he?” she hissed, stepping so close I could feel her breath.I tilted my chin up, a taunting sparkle in my eyes. “Hmm, let me see, in my

  • The Black Wolf    Chapter 69: A Whisper Too Loud

Vireya's POV Zevarion moved easily around the fire, his hands sure and graceful, and for a fleeting moment, I could hardly believe that the mysterious, aloof wolf I thought I knew was also a gentle soul who could cook my favorite dish.He placed a bowl of fish soup in front of me, my favorite, and I dug in eagerly, savoring the rich aroma that filled my senses. “I can’t believe you made this,” I said around a mouthful. “But then again, it’s you, the mysterious Zevarion.” I added with a playful smile. He chuckled warmly. “Very soon, Vireya,” he said softly, “you’ll understand everything about me.”I smiled, my shoulders relaxing. “Honestly,” I replied, “I’m not even curious anymore. That curiosity nearly broke your trust once,” I admitted.“There’s nothing wrong with being curious,” he assured me. “And it wasn’t your fault. I kept too much to myself, but I promise you’ll know everything soon.”A warm glow spread through my chest at his words. “Okay,” I whispered, my attention returni

Vireya's POV “What?” he asked, almost too quickly.I stared at him. “What did you just say?”“I mean… if you’re hurt, I feel it too,” he admitted, his gaze darting away from mine like he’d revealed too much.“Zev,” I said softly, trying to meet his eyes.He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Okay, whenever we’re together and you’re in pain, I feel it too. That’s how the Thorned Chain works. It feeds on the emotional bond, it binds the pain, multiplies it between the carrier and their lover.”My lips parted, stunned. “Why didn’t you ever tell me?” I whispered. He chuckled lightly. “What difference would it have made? I’m not the one who had the necklace digging into my skin. You were the one truly suffering.”But his eyes his eyes betrayed the lie. They shimmered with a hidden ache, a quiet torment he’d carried in silence. And suddenly, it was too much, the thought of him suffering in secret, just to spare me the weight.Tears blurred my vision as I threw my arms around him, bu

Vireya's POV He rushed toward me with a raw energy, and before I could take another breath, his arms were around me. The world seemed to shrink until all that remained was him, his strength lifting me off the ground, his warmth soaking into my skin. I buried my face in his neck and inhaled him, savoring his scent as if I could bottle it forever. When he finally set me down, my hands flew to his face, trembling as my thumbs brushed across his cheeks. “Is this real? Is it truly you?” My voice broke, a fragile whisper suspended between fear and hope. His gaze held a light I thought I’d never see again. “It’s me, Vireya. I’m back for you,” he murmured, his lips curving into a smile that reached his eyes. That was all I needed. Tears glistened in my eyes as I pulled him close again, my hands threading into his hair, my lips meeting his in a kiss that was all hunger and relief. Every part of me ached with how much I’d missed him.“I’ve missed you,” he whispered against my lips when we fi
