LOGINRyder takes a step closer, his hands shoved deep into his leather jacket pockets. The firelight dances over his razor-sharp jawline, accentuating every dangerous angle as the crackle of wood sparks between us.
“The Black Pack,” he starts, his voice low and rumble-heavy. “We run this entire territory. My father is the Alpha, but he’s stepping down soon. Dante—your sweet, pristine art history professor—is next in line. He’s taking the throne.”
I let out a harsh, dry bark of laughter, shaking my head in disbelief. “Dante? The guy who grades my charcoal sketches with a fountain pen that costs more than my rent? He’s a fucking Alpha?”
“Alpha heir,” Ryder corrects, his dark eyes glinting with a dangerous amusement. “And I’m the enforcer. I handle the dirty work he doesn’t want to stain his polished hands with. Which brings us to you, Haven. You’re wolf-born. You knew what I was the second I walked into that room.”
“Yeah, well, excuse me if my life isn’t a goddamn fairy tale,” I snap, aggressively kicking a stray pebble into the flames. “My parents are Betas back home, so don’t act like I don’t know how this hierarchy bullshit works. They practically worship the ground the pack leaders walk on, which is precisely why my home life is a complete fucking disaster.”
Ryder tilts his head, his possessive gaze tracking the furious rise and fall of my chest. “Spill it, little wolf.”
“My sister, Tarryn,” I spit out the name like it’s poison, my blood boiling all over again. “The golden child. She’s twenty-one, an entitled fucking whore, and my dad’s absolute favourite because she’s following his footsteps to be a lawyer. Two weeks ago, I walked into my apartment and caught her bent over the couch getting railed from behind by my boyfriend. Ex-boyfriend. Silas, the spineless prick.”
The flames flicker wildly as Ryder’s posture instantly stiffens. A dark, lethal growl vibrates deep within his chest at the mention of another guy, the air around us turning suffocatingly heavy.
“The bitch had the goddamn nerve to tell me it was my fault because I wouldn’t put out,” I continue, my voice shaking with pure, unadulterated fury. “Said I was a prude. Fuck her, and fuck him. I came to college to get away from my family’s golden-girl bullshit, and now you’re telling me my professor is a fucking Alpha and you are my mate?”
I cross my arms tightly over my chest, glaring at him through the floating embers. “So yeah, Ryder Black. My life is a total shitshow right now, and I am not in the fucking mood for soulmate fairy dust.”
For a second, the lethal, dark energy rolling off Ryder completely evaporates, replaced by a low, throaty laugh that rattles through the cold midnight air. The sound is surprisingly rich, sending a sharp, unwanted shiver down my spine.
“Fuck, you’ve got teeth, don’t you, little wolf?” he chuckles, shaking his head as he takes a step closer. “I like it. Let the fucking prick and your saintly sister rot.”
“Oh, they will,” I mutter, though my cheeks burn at the fierce, dangerous approval shining in his dark eyes. I clear my throat, trying to regain my footing and ignore the intense magnetism pulling me toward him. “So, how old are you anyway? You look like you’ve seen a few body bags, and your brother looks like he’s lived three whole lifetimes judging by the stick up his ass.”
“I’m twenty-six,” Ryder says, a slow smirk playing on his lips. “Dante’s thirty-two. Old enough to run the pack, old enough to teach your little art class, and entirely too old to be as miserable as he is.”
“Twenty-six,” I repeat, rolling the number around in my head. “So you’re seven years older than me. Fantastic. Just what I needed—another Black brother taking up space in my head.”
“I’m not just taking up space, Haven. I’m claiming it,” he corrects softly, his tone dropping an octave into pure, possessive velvet.
I scoff, wrapping my arms tightly around myself to hide the way my pulse spikes. “Right. So what does a twenty-six-year-old pack enforcer do when he’s not terrifying college kids at frat parties? Do you have actual hobbies, or is being brooding and hot a full-time gig?”
His dark eyes glint with amusement. “I rebuild vintage motorcycles. Tear them down to the bare frame, fix what’s broken, make them roar. And when I’m not in the garage, I’m usually in the ring, beating the hell out of pack recruits who think they can challenge me.” He tilts his head, eyeing me up and down. “What about you? Aside from being an angsty art major with a mouth like a sailor?”
“I paint. Charcoal, oil, canvas—whatever I can get my hands on,” I say defensively. “And I don’t paint pretty little landscapes. I like raw, messy shit. Real life.”
“Sounds like we’re going to get along just fine,” Ryder says smoothly.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself. You probably have a trail of pack vixens back at your compound.”
Ryder steps right into my personal space, his broad chest practically brushing mine, the heat radiating off his body suffocatingly intense. “Nope. Single by choice. Always have been. I didn’t give a fuck about playing house or taking some fake bitch to my bed just to satisfy pack optics.” He reaches out, his warm fingers lightly brushing a stray strand of hair from my hot cheek. “I was waiting for something real. I was waiting for you.”
The air inside Room 204 was suffocating, thick with a dark, crackling energy before I even reached my seat in the back row.Professor Dante Black stood at the front of the lecture hall, but the polished, unflappable composure he usually wore like armour was noticeably frayed. His dark suit jacket was discarded over the back of his chair, his crisp white sleeves pulled up past his elbows, and his jawline set in an iron-hard, unforgiving line. He had already reduced a timid freshman in the front row to near silence over a minor question about the syllabus before I had even pulled out my notebook. The moment I slid into my seat, the heavy wooden legs scraping softly against the floor, Dante’s head snapped up.His icy blue eyes cut through the dim room, locking onto me with a lethal, terrifying intensity. His nostrils flared slightly as the thick, unmistakable scent of his brother—pine, cedar, and raw, possessive wolf—washed over the front podium. Then his gaze dropped down my body, takin
“Yeah,” I breathed against his wet skin, my hands sliding up his broad shoulders for balance. “Just... completely wrecked.”A low, satisfied rumble echoed deep in his chest. Ryder turned off the faucet, cutting the heavy spray and leaving only the sound of our ragged breathing in the warm, steam-filled room. He reached over the glass enclosure, grabbing a thick charcoal towel to wrap around my shoulders before using another to dry himself off with quick, efficient movements.Back in his bedroom, I didn’t even care that I didn’t have a fresh change of clothes. I pulled on my dark jeans, but instead of my damp knit sweater, Ryder tossed me a heavy, charcoal-grey cotton hoodie from his closet. It swallowed my frame entirely, the hem hitting mid-thigh and the sleeves burying my hands, carrying his dark pine-and-leather scent so strongly it felt like a physical embrace.Ryder pulled on a fresh pair of dark jeans, a fitted black t-shirt that stretched over his broad chest, and his heavy lea
The water was slicking everything—my skin, his skin, the walls—making every touch feel twice as intense. He grabbed my thighs and hoisted me up, my legs locking around his waist as he pressed me harder against the slate. The stone was warm from the steam, but he was hotter.“You’re so beautiful when you’re wet like this,” he muttered, his eyes dark and fixed on mine. His hands slid down to my backside, squeezing firmly, pulling me flush against him until I could feel every inch of his hardness through the thin fabric of his sweatpants.I arched into him, a low moan escaping my lips as the water cascaded over us both. “Ryder, please...”“Please what?” he challenged, his voice dropping to that dangerous growl. He leaned in, his lips brushing against mine, barely touching. “Tell me what you want, Haven. Say it.”“Lose the sweatpants,” I breathed, my voice trembling but certain. I gripped his shoulders, pulling him closer until our chests collided. “Lose them and fuck me, Ryder. Right her
The kitchen was bathed in golden morning light as Ryder plated up a massive spread—thick-cut bacon, fluffy scrambled eggs, and golden buttered toast. I perched on the tall bar stool, my knees hooked around the metal frame, eagerly digging in like a woman starved.Ryder leaned back against the edge of the granite counter directly across from me, his bare chest glistening faintly in the sunlight, his dark eyes tracking every movement of my lips as I ate.“You’re watching me like I’m going to run away,” I said between bites, setting down my fork to take a sip of the rich, steaming coffee.“I’m watching you because you’re mine,” he rumbled, his voice low and heavy with that thick wolf velvet. He stepped around the island, his long fingers trailing over the smooth marble before catching my jawline, tilting my face upward. “And because you’ve got a drop of syrup right here.”Before I could grab a napkin, Ryder leaned down, his lips brushing gently over the corner of my mouth. The gesture st
He set me down gently onto the plush mattress, the stark contrast between his earlier feral intensity and this delicate care almost dizzying. Before I could pull away or complain about feeling handled, Ryder climbed up beside me, pulling the heavy wool duvet over us both and dragging me firmly against his side.My head settled naturally against the hard plane of his chest, the steady, rhythmic thudding of his heart echoing beneath my ear like an anchor. The cabin was deathly quiet now, save for the low whistle of the mountain wind pushing against the glass panes and the soft, heavy hum of our shared breathing.“Where did the big bad Enforcer go?” I murmured, my voice raspy and barely louder than a whisper, my fingers absently tracing the harsh line of his collarbone. “I thought you only knew how to break things.”Ryder’s chest rumbled with a quiet vibration that warmed me straight to the bone. His broad hand slid up to cup the back of my head, his calloused fingers gently working thro
He pulled me closer, his body grinding into mine with a ruthless intent that made my knees weak. I could feel the power in his arms, the way he held me against the wall like I weighed nothing at all. Every thrust was deeper than the last, driving the breath from my lungs until all I could do was cling to him.“Tell me you’re mine,” he demanded, his voice a low command vibrating against my skin. “Say it.”“I’m yours,” I managed to choke out, my voice trembling. “Ryder, I’m yours.”That seemed to snap something inside him. His pace became frantic, almost violent, his hips slamming against mine with a force that made my vision swim.“That’s my girl,” he roared, the sound tearing from his chest as he buried his face in the crook of my neck. His teeth grazed my skin, not biting hard enough to break, but enough to make me cry out. He was relentless now, his body a machine of heat and muscle, driving into me with a rhythm that felt like it was shaking the very walls around us.My legs were t
