Chapter 2

Author: Luna Glow
I thought he was moved to tears back then, too overwhelmed to speak. It turned out he was just struggling to keep from laughing out loud.

Everything my mom and I had sacrificed to give him was nothing more than a pocket-change joke in his world of luxury.

Nicole tilted her head, smiling sweetly. "Hey, stop teasing Charles! It was my idea not to get pregnant, so I told Charles to let her keep the baby instead."

"If it’s a boy, we’ll throw two hundred grand at her to buy him off. I heard she’s super stingy and money-hungry, anyway. And if it’s a girl? We’ll just have somebody raise her. How much could that even cost?"

Every single word stabbed right into my chest like a blade.

Part of me desperately wished Charles would say something to deny it. Instead, his silence offered nothing but total betrayal.

Suddenly, one of the guys burst into a mocking laugh. "Nicole, the target you picked for this prank is so lame. Her dad literally begged me to buy his plot of land for a measly ten grand. How can someone be so hopelessly poor? My ribs hurt from holding in my laughter!"

Nicole giggled, melting right into Charles’ arms.

Charles looked annoyed, as if my very existence was an embarrassment to him. Yet, all I could see was the memory of my dad, his back hunched, hiking twenty miles just to hand me his life's savings for the cornea surgery.

He had been covered in dirt, but his eyes were so bright with hope.

"My baby girl is so beautiful... I have to make sure my son-in-law gets to see you at least once."

I watched the scene inside the room with total composure, even as my world was crashing down before me.

My phone buzzed.

It was a text from the hospital, attached to a non-disclosure agreement. [Ma'am, are you sure you don't want to think this over? This experimental drug is excruciatingly painful. Even grown men can't tolerate it.]

Without hesitation, I signed my name, because nothing could ever hurt more than this.

It was as if I had planned to die in the winter, only to be dragged back to the living world by sheer, agonizing pain.

Back at our rented apartment, I pushed through the pain to pack up all of Charles' things and dump them straight into the trash.

I even took a pair of scissors and shredded our bucket-list photo album.

The photo of him holding me while I shivered at a bungee jumping platform, making a peace sign; him frantically giving me CPR after I fainted while scuba diving. There was a picture of him laughing as he pushed me out of the plane cabin when my legs went weak during skydiving.

All those first times when I had literally gambled with my life, I had thought they were precious memories for him, too. Only now did I realize they were just cheap thrills to kill his time.

At 8.30 p.m., Charles came home, intentionally tapping his blind cane loudly against the floor.

He grumbled under his breath, "Why didn't you come pick me up?"

Usually, I would have rushed over, apologizing and coaxing him, but not today.

"Saving two bucks on gas again... so damn stingy."

Even though his mutterings were faint, every word reached my ears loud and clear.

I could barely believe what I was hearing. I was only stingy with myself, even cutting back on my own painkillers. I had hand-sewn every single piece of baby clothing just to save a bit more.

However, with Charles? Knowing he was an orphan, I had never withheld a single dime, even if his past turned out to be just another lie.

After a suffocating silence, Charles seemed slightly taken aback by my lack of response. Suddenly, a small medicine bottle slipped from my hand, clattering and rolling right to his feet.

My heart hammered against my ribs.

If he took off those dark glasses and read the label, "Cancer Treatment", maybe he’d feel a shred of remorse.

Every night, I stayed up until my eyes bled, translating ten documents a night just to save up money he never even needed. And all this time, he had played blind to it all.

Just as he bent down slightly, his phone rang.

A smirk instantly curled Charles' lips, and he carelessly tossed a box into my lap. "Your birthday gift. I need to take a client call."

I stared at the velvet box, feeling nothing but a cold, hollow apathy for the first time. As I walked into the bedroom to get my medication, I overheard Charles' chuckle coming through the phone line.

"Don't worry, whatever she has isn't contagious. She’s probably recovered by now and is just being dramatic. Besides, I secretly swapped her pills out a while ago, and she’s totally fine."

Seeing it was cancer medication, Charles' breath hitched. He frantically tore through the drawers. One bottle, two bottles, three bottles… There were twelve bottles of cancer medication hidden. At the very bottom of the drawer lay a crumpled medical diagnosis form: Stage Four Leukemia."No... this can't be..." Charles muttered under his breath, his hands trembling so violently he could barely hold on to the paper."She was just supposed to be anemic!"The memory of listening to Nicole's idea of secretly swapping out Margo's medication surged back to him. A wave of overwhelming guilt crashed over him, and he lunged toward the trash can like a man gone completely mad.Wads of blood-stained tissues filled the bin, stinging his eyes with a burning sharpness, and at the very bottom lay my bucket list diary, soaked in dried blood. As he opened the first page, tears slammed down onto the paper.[Nov 15: Threw up a lot of blood today, but I have to hide it from Charles. Third-person POVCharles' knuckles turned white around his phone as the seventeenth unanswered call cut to voicemail.Nicole pouted, a spike of resentment tightening her chest. Normally, Charles' attention and devotion belonged exclusively to her. But right now, every shred of it was consumed by that low-class woman she looked down on.She leaned heavily onto Charles' shoulder, tapping her manicured nail against the crumpled abortion form."Stop worrying. This procedure was scheduled at Mom's hospital, and I personally checked with the main desk. Margo’s name isn’t even on the patient list. She's just playing hard to get!"Charles' tense shoulders relaxed slightly, but in the very next second, Nicole wrapped her arms tightly around his."Charles, our engagement party has already been postponed three times. We definitely can't push back next Monday's date again, okay?"Nicole’s palms grew clammy upon realizing her effortless game was spiraling into an unsettling ordeal. She cou

His eyes turned bloodshot in an instant. He looked far too dirty, far too disheveled. His rubber boots were torn to shreds from hiking miles of rough mountain trails, and his face was smeared with mud and rainwater. In the eyes of these finely dressed high-society guests, he didn't look like a father trying to save his daughter. He looked like a lunatic, a vagrant.Without warning, a security guard slammed a heavy baton viciously against his head. Blood gushed out immediately, staining his graying hair crimson."Dad!"My soul shattered into pieces. I began to cough until blood spewed, choking on my words into unintelligible cries.Charles, acting completely oblivious to the violence, held a vice-like grip on my arm, sharply berating me. "Margo, stop making a scene! Apologize to Nicole right now! You were the one who started this!"He couldn't see a daughter's heart breaking into a thousand pieces nor did he give a damn about anything I cared about. The only thing on his mind wa

"You're not married yet, right? Maybe if you dress a little nicer and act a bit more open-minded, a man will actually want to take you off the market! Oh, by the way, when you collect the charity payout later, you'll have to sign the registry under 'unwed and pregnant.'"Her words cut like knives. Yet, Charles' silence rang far louder.Nicole yanked me straight into the dressing room and carelessly pointed at a random dress. "I specifically set this one aside for you. It's twenty-nine hundred bucks. You weren’t planning on freeloading off us, were you?"Faced with her malicious attempt to humiliate me, I slowly pulled out a stack of crumpled tens and fifties, barely managing to piece together the amount.Nicole let out an exaggerated gasp. "Whoa, don't tell me you broke open your piggy bank for this?"I gave a calm nod. "I did."Charles' face instantly turned pale.We had bought that piggy bank right after we got together. Back then, I had told him that once we saved enough mo

My head spun violently. It's no wonder my condition had deteriorated so rapidly.Feeling my stomach churn, I scrambled into the bathroom and threw up violently into the bowl.Charles dropped his phone and rushed over, pounding urgently on the door. His voice carried a sudden edge of panic. "Margo? Is it morning sickness?"I stared blankly at the streaks of blood coating the toilet before quietly flushing it away. When I opened the door and stepped out, I brushed away the hand he extended to hold me."I'm fine."The corners of Charles's mouth stiffened. My strange behavior throughout the whole evening was clearly driving him up the wall. When his eyes landed on the unopened gift box, his temper finally reached its boiling point. He slammed his hand on the table. "I bought that for you. Why haven't you even opened it?"Was I supposed to act eternally grateful for a cheap fake?"I really like it," I said flatly. Before the words could even settle, blood burst from my nose withou
