LOGINI zipped my bag shut and hid it under the bed.
Years ago, I gave up everything for Steven. I packed my life into a single suitcase, left my hometown, and came to a place where I knew nobody.
I had no friends here. No family to run to. I spent two whole years isolated in his house, relying on him for every meal and every step. I gave him my absolute devotion because I thought he was my safe haven.
Now I knew the truth. And I was going to go back home and play the sister that ran away. This was my way out, no matter how unpalatable the whole thing looked.
Steven knew nothing about the phone call. He knew nothing about my plan to leave.
That evening, Steven came into the room while I was sitting by the desk, pretending to feel my way around a book. He walked over and set a stack of papers down near me.
"Nina, I had Lacy bring up some forms for you to sign later," Steven said, his tone casual.
I paused, keeping my face blank. "Lacy? Who is Lacy?"
Steven went still for a second. He cleared his throat quickly. "Oh, I mean... the maid. Her name is Lacy."
"I don't like her, Steven," I said softly, staring toward his chest. "She's aggressive. She smells like expensive perfume, not like someone who cleans houses. And she was mean to me today. Why don't you fire her and get someone else?"
Steven’s voice hardened instantly.
"Don't be ridiculous, Nina. She works hard. You're just being overly sensitive because of your condition.""My condition?" I asked, looking up at him. "Steven, she spat in my soup—"
"Enough!" Steven snapped, his anger suddenly flaring up. He stepped closer, towering over me, his face twisting into something ugly.
"I am tired of your complaining! Do you have any idea how much I do for you? I took you in when you were a useless, blind mess! I stay with you every single day through all of this!"
The words were hurtful but he didn't seem to care. My breath caught in my throat.
"I stayed with you when anyone else would have thrown you away!" Steven yelled, stepping right into my space.
"You should be grateful I’m even here! Look at you! You're blind and useless to me! Nobody else could ever love you in a state like this! Nobody!"I sat completely frozen as his words echoed through the room. The pain sliced so deep I couldn't even breathe.
For two years, he had acted like my sweet protector, but this was what he truly thought of me. He thought I was a burden. A piece of trash he was doing charity for.
Tears pooled in my eyes, but I forced my voice to stay steady.
“You're saying these mean words to me because of a maid?”
“No! I just wish that for once you will look past your condition and learn to treat other people better. You slapped the maid! How horrible is that?”
"Let's break up, Steven," I whispered.
Steven stopped. He blinked, staring down at me like I had spoken in a foreign language. Then, he let out a harsh, mocking laugh.
"Break up?" Steven sneered, shaking his head. "Stop being so unreasonable, Nina. You're throwing a tantrum over a maid. Where would you even go? Who would take care of you? You have nothing without me."
"I'm serious," I said, rising from the chair and picking up my cane. "We're done."
"You're being crazy," Steven spat, waving his hand dismissively. "Get over yourself. I'm going down to the office."
He turned and slammed the door behind him.
A few minutes later, I picked up my cane and stepped out into the hallway, moving quietly toward his home office down the corridor. I needed to see if the front coast was clear so I could leave. As I neared his door, I heard his voice booming through the crack.
"I told you to back off, Lacy!" Steven was growling angrily.
"You went too far today with the soup!""Why do you care so much?!" Lacy shrieked back. "You said you love me! Throw her out!"
"I am NOT leaving Nina!" Steven snapped firmly. "She stays here! Just do your job and stop pushing her, or I swear I'll lose my temper with you too!"
“It's not my fault that she is such a burden to you. You can actually get rid of something that trouble.”
“She just threatened to break up with me. She has been pushed too far.”
Lacy laughed.
“You know she can't do that.”
“I know. That's not whh I should let you treat her like filth. I know I'm all she has and she will always come crawling back to me. But I can't make life more unbearable for her.”
I didn't wait to hear the rest. I hurried back to my room, pulled my bag out from under the bed, and grabbed my coat.
I pulled out my phone, blocked Steven's number on everything, and turned the device off completely. I didn't want him tracking me. I didn't want him calling.
I slipped down the back stairs, stepped out into the cold night air, and walked away from the house without looking back once.
Nina's POV The car pulled into the driveway of the Whitestone Pack estate. I stared out the tinted window at the massive stone mansion towering over us. The moment the tires crunched onto the gravel, I started to panic. There was no grand welcome. There were no gentle greetings or time to unpack."We go straight to the hall," Romeo said, his voice flat and commanding as he turned off the engine. He unbuckled his seatbelt, his sharp profile dark against the dim evening light. "The elders are waiting. The bonding ceremony must be completed before nightfall."My throat went bone dry. "Now?""Now," Romeo repeated. He stepped out of the car, walked around to my side, and opened the door. He held out his hand to me.I stared at his broad palm, my pulse racing like a trapped bird. I reached out and placed my trembling fingers in his. This time, I literally gasped when our skins made contact. Romeo’s dark eyes flicked down to our joined hands, but his expression remained unreadable. He led
Nina's POV My mother didn't come to the station to meet me. I had to pay a cab driver with the last bit of cash in my purse to drop me off at my childhood home. When I pushed open the front door, my mother and stepfather were sitting in the living room, shouting at each other over a stack of unpaid bills."You're finally here!" my mother barked, stepping over to me without a hug, without a drop of warmth. She grabbed my arm tightly, her fingers digging into my skin. She tried to drag me inside, assuming I was still blind. I pulled my hand away with a firm grip."Looks like you still have the memory of this place," she sneered, crossing her arms. "Where is your luggage? Why are you dressed like a beggar?""I brought what I could," I said, looking her dead in the eye without a cane or a tremor. My stepfather scoffed from the sofa, spitting on the floor. "A blind brat. You managed to stay useless to yourself and everyone else for two years. You look worse than when I last saw you.""Tha

Nina's POV Lacy scrambled up beside him, pointing a shaking finger at me. "She slapped me, Steven! She walked straight up to me and slapped me! I think she can see!"My heart thundered in my chest. They were both staring at me, terrified that their sick little secret had been caught out. If I admitted it now, Steven would lock me down, or worse. I wasn't ready to leave yet. I needed to play this right.I let my eyes fill up with instant tears. I blinked, letting them roll down my cheeks, and allowed my shoulders to shake like I was terrified. I stared blankly at the space between Steven's ear and the wall, letting my hands tremble in front of me."Steven?" I sobbed, my voice cracking with pure heartbreak and fear. "Is that you? What's going on?"Steven hesitated. He stepped closer and waved his hand directly in front of my eyes. I didn't flinch. I kept my gaze hollow, letting the tears fall right through his sightline."Nina, why did you drop the soup?" Steven asked, his voice still
Nina's POV I sat on the edge of my bed, staring down at my hands. Every few seconds, I looked over at the door, waiting. Every time I closed my eyes, all I could see was Steven holding Lacy, kissing her forehead like she was the most precious thing in the world. He used to hold me like that. He used to tell me I was his whole life.I snorted. “A lying bastard. That's what he is.”Maybe I felt a little foolish for never seeing this side of him. A knock sounded at the door.I instantly closed my eyes for a brief second, wiped all the emotion off my face, and opened them back up, letting my gaze go blank and unfocused. I stared straight at the bedpost."Come in," I called out softly. The door pushed open. Footsteps tapped against the floor, loud and arrogant. I didn't need to see her face to know who it was, but I looked anyway—my eyes fixed slightly past her shoulder.Lacy walked in, holding a steaming bowl of soup on a small tray. She had a look of disgust on her face. I still reme
Nina's POV I was no longer blind. For two long years, my world had been nothing but endless darkness. I had to rely on Steven for everything. But over the last few days, the heavy fog over my eyes began to thin. The pitch-black void softened into blurred shapes, then into soft sunlight, and finally into clear reality.I stood in the center of my bedroom, turning around slowly as tears of pure relief filled my eyes. I could see the subtle pattern of the wallpaper, the light streaming through the curtains, and the faint reflection of my own face in the mirror. I was going to get my life back.A wave of joy washed over me. All I thought of was Steven. His promises, and how he swore he would take care of me until we could finally stand together at the altar. I couldn't wait to surprise him. I picked up my wooden walking stick, running my fingers over the smooth surface. We were going to burn this stick together. It would no longer be a reminder of the dark times we had survived. Then I
