Chapter 3

作者: Velvet
Lydia became the top student in our year faster than anyone expected. Within a month, her name was everywhere at Saint Orphia's.

Lydia loved being at the center of clever people. It made her feel powerful. But one thing bothered her: I was not isolated.

Now I had the Glamour Gift. My name had appeared three times on the academy gossip board, and someone had drawn my portrait in the Mirror Hall with the words the most beautiful new blood in Saint Orphia's written beneath it. And still, the girls spoke to me.

"Eleanor Vale. I'm taking you to the Crimson Cellar after class. Private room. Music. Fresh blood. You coming or not..."

A lazy voice came from the classroom door, and the room quieted almost at once. Cassian Voss stood outside with one hand in his pocket.

No one at Saint Orphia's wanted trouble with the Vosses. Cassian's father owned half the nightclubs, blood lounges, gambling rooms, and illegal fighting pits in the lower district. The professors pretended Cassian was just another student, but everyone knew better. Cassian looked straight at me.

In my first life, Cassian had pursued Lydia with the same reckless intensity. Lydia had loved it. She sat behind him on his black motorbike, and walked through school as if Cassian's violence belonged to her.

When other students annoyed her, Cassian frightened them. She had thought that made her the heroine of a dark romance. To everyone else, she had simply been cruel. I had no intention of repeating her mistake.

Cassian walked into the room and stopped beside my desk. He placed both hands on the wood and leaned down, blocking the light.

He was handsome, rich, and dangerous in the way that made girls whisper until he looked at them for too long.

"Well..." he said. "Don't make me ask twice." I closed my book. "I'm going home after class."

Cassian was used to being obeyed. My refusal embarrassed him, and the watching eyes only made it worse.

"Careful, Eleanor," he said, his voice dropping. "I'm being nice because I like you. Don't mistake that for patience."

No one spoke, not even Lydia. She sat three rows away with bright, interested eyes, clearly waiting to see what I would do.

"Cassian," I said softly, letting my voice tremble just enough, "why would you say that to me..."

His anger stopped at once. For a second, he looked completely lost.

"I didn't..." He straightened. "I wasn't threatening you." I blinked, and a tear slipped down my cheek.

The mood in the room changed. A moment ago, everyone had been afraid of him. Now that fear had sharpened into judgment, and it was pointed at Cassian instead of me.

In my first life, I had seen Cassian lose his temper countless times.

He was arrogant, violent, and spoiled, but there was one thing he never knew how to handle: a girl crying because of him. Especially in public.

He ran a hand through his hair and cursed under his breath. "Fine. Don't come. It's not a big deal." His tone turned awkward. "Just don't cry."

I did not answer. I gathered my books, covered my face, and hurried out of the classroom before the tears had time to dry.

A gilded cage was still a cage, and a pretty bird fed by its master would never learn the shape of the sky. Lydia wanted to become the genius everyone worshipped. Fine. Let her enjoy the applause. I had no interest in becoming someone's favorite songbird. I intended to grow talons.

  • The Blood Ledger’s Favorite Heir   Chapter 17

After Helena fulfilled her promise and transferred part of the Voss shares to me, I began investing. Not randomly, and not greedily. I chose projects I remembered from my first life: companies, research teams, and technologies that had not yet risen, but would. Some would change medicine. Some would reshape blood storage. Some would make quiet fortunes before the old houses even noticed them. Rebirth did not give me every answer, but it gave me enough.Helena, meanwhile, began tightening her hold over House Voss. She took control of the accounts, removed useless middlemen, reorganized the legal businesses, and separated clean assets from dirty ones.As for the things House Voss should never have touched, she pushed them back toward her father."My father can go to prison," Helena told me one evening, reading through a stack of legal documents. "I cannot."She turned a page calmly. "Most of those crimes were his decisions anyway. I checked the laws. He won't die for them."Then she adde

Lydia's idea of making my life difficult was simple. She dragged our parents onto the internet. In the video she posted, her eyes were swollen from crying. Mother sat beside her with a handkerchief, while Father stood behind them with the heavy expression of a man watching his family fall apart.Lydia looked into the camera and called for me to come home. “I don’t want to accuse my sister,” Lydia said, tears sliding down her face. “But I missed the final trials because of a strange accident, and Eleanor was the only one who benefited.”Mother began crying. Father lowered his head. Then Lydia whispered, “I just want her to come home.” The performance was crude, but it worked.Lydia had bought attention. Within hours, my name was everywhere on RavenNet, along with hashtags like #PoorLydiaVale, #ValeFamilyDrama, #EleanorValeExposed. In my private follower group, the women who had supported me from the beginning were furious."Eleanor would never do something like this.""She's just a stud

Lydia woke after the final trials ended, and then she broke. For hours, she cried at home until her voice went hoarse. Mother held her while Father paced the parlor, and both of them kept telling her it was not the end. She could prepare for another year. A brilliant child like her would always have another chance. There would be no next time. She had missed Professor Selwyn, the final trials, and the one stage the Scholar Gift needed most. The next day, Father called me back to the Vale house. Father cleared his throat. "Eleanor, you will defer for a year." He continued, "Your place at university will go to Lydia.""Father," I said, "do you think the admissions board is blind, or do you think Lydia and I still look the same..."His face darkened. "You are twin sisters.""We were born twins," I said. "That does not mean we are interchangeable."Mother frowned. "Your sister is smarter than you. If she goes, she will do well. You can take the trials again next year.""Smile," I said. The

For the entire day, Lydia could not focus. She kept looking out the classroom window.Every time footsteps passed in the corridor, her back straightened. Every time a carriage stopped near the academy gate, her eyes lit up. She was waiting for a stranger in a scholar's coat, a Black Council badge, and enough authority to make everyone who had mocked her lower their heads.Morning passed into afternoon. By the time the sun sank behind the clouded skyline of Ravenshade, Professor Selwyn had still not appeared. The moment she saw me, she rushed over. "Eleanor! What did you do..." I looked up from my notes. "What are you talking about...""Professor Selwyn!" Her voice shook with fury. "Why didn't he come today..."I tilted my head, confused. "What professor..." Lydia's face twisted. "Stop pretending. You know exactly who I mean. He was supposed to..."I cut her off, my expression cooling. "I already left home because of you. What else do you want from me..." The hallway fell silent for hal

Recently, Lydia had been quietly approaching Adrian Blackthorne. In my first life, she had charged through the vampire courts with nothing but beauty and confidence, yet she had never truly understood how to win a man's heart. In this life, she was making the same mistake with a different gift.Adrian's attitude changed almost immediately. He began speaking to her more often. He invited her to review blood-law problems after school. Twice, he had a driver take her to dinner at private restaurants where young heirs liked to pretend they were already adults.Mother was delighted. This time, she did not call Lydia shameless. She did not ask why a young girl was going out with a boy from an old house. She did not worry about reputation, danger, or family honor. In Mother's eyes, Lydia was only studying with a classmate. Just as, in my first life, she had believed everything I did was proper once my grades were good enough.Mother did not truly love hardworking children. My grades had never

In the office, Helena was still speaking with my parents. Her tone was calm, professional, and impossible to interrupt."Eleanor is at a critical stage before the final academy examinations," she said. "Whatever disagreements you have at home can wait until after the exams. Her studies should not be disrupted now."Mother sat stiffly on the sofa, her eyes still red from anger. Father looked embarrassed.Helena placed a folder on the desk. "I have also reviewed Eleanor's online account. There is nothing inappropriate there. Most of her videos are study notes, revision routines, and academic sharing."She looked at my parents through her rimless glasses. "That is a good thing. Eleanor is diligent, organized, and has strong learning habits. If her notes can help other students, I see no reason to condemn her for it."Mother's expression changed at once. In front of teachers, she always knew how to become humble."Yes, yes, Professor Voss is right," she said quickly. "We were only worried
