In Onyx City, the ancient Thorne clan lived by a ruthless blood-pact law. If the clan Lord granted a new fledgling his absolute protection, the reigning Consort had to yield her place. She was required to remove her bloodstone collar—the ultimate symbol of his patronage and power—and fasten it around the neck of the new ward herself, right in front of the entire clan. Mia was that fledgling. Today marked exactly one year since she had been taken under the wing of Lord Luca, the man I considered my mate. Every vampire in Onyx City was waiting for me to break down. After all, I had been his closest companion and deepest obsession for ten years. I was the dying stray he’d saved from a hunter’s silver blade. I had craved him like a drug. I used to wake up in the dead of night, begging for his bite, his blood. I only felt peace when his scent swallowed me whole. They all knew my sickening dependence on him. They had even placed bets, swearing I would never let go. Yet, as Mia tilted her pale, fragile neck at me, taunting me with her sickeningly sweet voice, I didn't shed a single tear. Without a moment's hesitation, I unclasped the heavy bloodstone collar and fastened it around her throat myself. Luca lounged on his dark velvet throne, swirling the blood wine in his goblet. His scarlet eyes gleamed with amusement. "Elara. You've finally learned how to please me." I lowered my eyes, my fingertips brushing my bare, cold collarbone. I said nothing. Luca didn't know the truth. My sealed memories had awakened a month ago. I wasn't some lowly stray who had been clinging to life on the streets. I was the lost princess of the Nightshades, the oldest and most formidable Original bloodline in the dark world. In three days, my brother would arrive to take me home. I would reclaim my true identity.

Chapter 1

The Thorne Castle banquet hall reeked of sweet blood and heavy musk.

Mia flaunted her new bloodstone collar to the clan elders. Fake gasps of admiration echoed around her. Instantly, countless mocking stares shot toward me from the corners.

Luca sat on his throne at the head of the table. His cold, careless gaze cut through the crowd. It landed right on the side of my face.

After soaking up all the flattery, Mia swayed over to me. She held a glass of crimson liquid.

Her eyes locked onto the flawless amethyst daylight ring on my finger.

A year ago, on our blood bond anniversary, Luca bought it for a fortune at a dark magic auction. Just to make me smile.

Mia giggled and leaned close to my ear. "Elara, you already gave up the collar. Don't you think it's pathetic to keep clinging to the Consort's things?"

She reached out to touch the ring. I smoothly stepped back.

The main event of the night was about to begin.

By tradition, I was supposed to present the nether-rose. I had spent six months growing it with my own lifeblood.

It sat on a black crystal stand in the center of the hall. A gift for Luca's Centennial Blood Moon Festival.

But Mia beat me to the stand. Her voice was soft and overly sweet as she announced, "Luca said I get to present the festival gift tonight."

Before I could react, she grabbed a vial of liquid silver. With a deliberate flick of her wrist, she splashed it over my black rose.

A harsh hiss filled the room. The luscious petals instantly melted into a foul-smelling black puddle.

The crystal vase slipped and shattered on the floor.

She immediately grabbed her wrist. Her eyes turned red. Tears spilled down her cheeks.

"Elara, I was just trying to help... If you didn't want me to touch it, you could have just said so. Why did your magic hurt me?"

The decadent classical music stopped dead.

Every vampire in the hall snapped their eyes to us.

In the past, Luca would have used dark magic to tear apart any woman who dared to provoke me.

I used to be so horribly insecure.

If another woman even looked at Luca, I would hide in his arms and cry. I'd cry until he threw her into the deepest, sun-starved dungeon of the castle.

But this time was different.

Luca turned into a blur of black mist. He materialized between us and shielded Mia behind him.

His eyes fell on a barely visible scratch on Mia's pale skin. His handsome face twisted into a frown.

"Enough, Elara." His tone was pure accusation. "Mia is just a fledgling. Her newborn senses are fragile. Did you really have to scare her with your dark magic just to get attention at my banquet?"

I looked at the face I had loved with everything I had. A sharp pain ripped through my chest.

I took a deep breath and forced back my tears.

I didn't defend myself. I didn't grab his cloak and beg like I used to.

I just looked up. I coldly pulled the amethyst daylight ring off my finger.

While everyone stared in shock, I handed it to Mia.

"If you wanted, take this. I'm sorry my gift hurt you."
